Channel 5 is the station that viewers in the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee (Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City) tune their dial to see NBC Television Network programs, and has been such since WCYB-TV (@wcyb5) first began broadcasting in August 1956. Although Channel 5 is the only commercial station licensed to the Virginia side of the market, the FCC requires the station to include Kingsport and Johnson City in their legal station IDs.
This clip commences with a station ID graphic that thanks the viewers for watching WCYB-TV. Following is Channel 5's Daily Devotions, featuring Lester McKinnon (1937-2010), long-time pastor of Bristol's Fellowship Chapel who did WCYB's sign-on/off sermonettes for 25 years. Afterward comes the station sign-off, voiced by Steve Taylor, that gives the TV audience some glimpses of the behind-the-camera employees and equipment of Channel 5, including a couple of scenes of the NewsChannel 5 set minus its anchors. The origins of the SSB film are shrouded in mystery, for its visuals resemble those used in one of the Mormon Church's SSB films of the 1970s, but the audio (acoustic guitar transitioning into a full band) was used by the U.S. Navy in at least a couple of their SSB productions. Color bars and tone close out the video.
