I can highly recommend WD Black. I use my PC for graphic design/3d and it runs almost non-stop. I just checked the SMART data and here is the data: WD Black 1TB: work hours 58861(6.7 years non stop), no read errors, no reallocated sectors, no seek errors Seagate Baracuda 500gb: work hours 62324 (7.1 years non stop), 40.7 million read errors (all fixed by hardware error correction), 88 relocated sectors, 87.1million seek errors. They both work similar time but the Baracuda is showing problems, with seek errors, read errors and 88 bad sectors. Please don't consider this as a bad result, because it is good. A drive that can work 5 full years is excellent. People who stop their PC, would never reach 5 full years of work and they are going to upgrade anyway. Now the WD Black is obviously a beast of a drive. It worked 6.7 years and is showing absolutely no problems. Not a single read error, not a single seek error, no bad sectors. This vibration protection in WD Black is probably an active stabilization of the platters, which means it spins perfectly even after the bearings already got some wear and the result is excellent.

If we're in the mood for anecdotes, I have a 16 year old barracuda 500gbs, (from 2008 or so), it already overflowed the power on hours (as it's always on), alongside an Hitachi 500gb (same time more or less). Zero issues with it (though I know better than to put unbackuped stuff on it even short term), same with the old Hitachi. WD, however... man o man will I ever, had a 4TB WD "gold" piece of that died just after the warranty expired, as in eerily after, with such bad noises that I RMAd the first one (they did replace it) and gave up on redoing it when the second one had the same shit noises. It was a painful lesson to have, but at least I now know there is no such thing as "it's just noise it's harmless" when you can clearly use your brain and deduce that such noises on every damned seek cannot be benign. Also I know to avoid WDs as much as I can (but obviously can't make a total statement here). It's bad enough if a drive fails but to have a drive not fail and still make life hell is ten times worse. Yes I know "black is what you buy if you care about noise" as if it matters in terms of cancelling the reliability issues but still black cost at least twice the gold here so for me it was a moot point either way.

I worked for a PC Hardware distributor, and the returns (failures) on WD are the lowest even the pulled ones don't fail Seagate is a joke compared to that, if you want reliability get WD or HGST.

HGST former Hitachi is a subsidiary company of WD so maybe that's not surprising. But Hitachi always stood for reliable drives and I have some drives from them running even today still.

Currently running all of them. a 3 TB Hitachi, 3 TB Seagate and 1 TB WD. all of them are fine. The only drives that failed to me were a 160 GB Seagate (which had 8 yrs lifetime before that, so I'm ok with that and it,s not really broken, just alot of errors on it.) and a 400 GB Samsung.

For a Radio Shack Model III, my uncle paid around $600.00 for a 5Mb drive. I remember us talking about never being able to fill it up. How short of a time it took to wind up with 5.25 DSDD floppies that were 1/10 the space of that old drive, at a fraction of the cost. Now my phone take pictures that would have got on that old drive.

I have two WD Black 2TB drives in Raid 0 for my gaming storage, they come pretty close to a low end SSD's read/write. Very good choice for mass game storage.

I recently had to replace my security camera dvr hdd and ordered a cheap 500gb hdd at amazon. I thought that I bought a blue but what actually arrived was a 500gb black. Needless to say the 500gb black is now inside my pc serving as my gaming drive; dvr got an old 400gb one i had sitting in another pc.

I replaced the same HDD from a windows nt email server. It was the only machine to stay during the several company wide system upgrades over the years. The server was made in 1997 and I "retired" it in 2010 after the company I worked for got new systems. The Fireball still worked as it ran about 95% of the time it was installed.

Surveillance drives make great TV recording drives. My Arris box (6 tuners) has been running a Seagate surveillance drive for over a year with no hard drive issues. My older Moto and Pace boxes used them for years with no problems as well. As mentioned in the vid, they can sometimes be found cheap because they are not popular.

You would think so but the original drives are all over the shop. Blacks, Blues, Barracudas but never a surveillance drive. Probably whatever the manufacturer could get on hand at bulk cheap at the time.

Still running a 1TB WD Green as my recording drive. It's fast enough. But with pllannig to build a local server, I would go with 4x 3 TB 5400 RPM in RAID 1 and maybe putting the WD Green in there as system drive. (Should be enough for the rather low disk access to it.)

NAS with WD Red is what I use to make sure my data never goes away. I highly recommend it to anyone, even for at home use. Small mirrored setup that you can even grab and run out if a fire breaks out can save a lot of memories from the ashes. Especially if you refuse to use any cloud functions because no one else should have your data.

@@IrelandVonVicious Probably the shingled magnetic recording hard drive fiasco. WD sold Red drives with SMR and advertised them as good for servers. Except SMR is not great for servers as it takes a while to restore in the event of a failure compared to traditional hard drives. In one instance by the back blaze team, it took 9 days to restore. 9. Days.

For silent systems the WD Reds are the perfect drives for me because of the lower noise and vibration than the blues or greens. I use the 3TB drive alongside my 1TB 850 Evo for secondary storage and dump really big games and media onto it. I did not noticed a huge performance difference in comparison to my old 7200rpm blue drive that was just too freaking loud!

It's nice to still have indepth reviews of magnetic drives even though SSD's and M.2 are all the rage. Even with flash memory decreasing in price, magnetic drives will be here to stay for the future as they will always be cheaper at higher densities, and have less volatile memory that may still be recoverable in the event of certain catastrophes.

I've had WD Drives for years and have had great success with them. With that being said, I have yet to see anyone address the warranty issues with buying bare drives. Somewhere like Newegg for instance, where a lot of people buy bare drives for cheap and don't get the full information on warranty. A lot of bare drives are branded versions(Dell, etc) and have no warranty from WD. If you try to go to the brand(dell) for warranty, they will say there's none, because it was bare and not in a pre-built.WD will also say it was a drive meant for pre-built systems and no warranty. Newegg MIGHT warranty them, but doubtfull.

What you're calling "bare drives" are not sold to end users so you do not get any warranty from the drive manufacturer. They're sold in bulk to OEMs such as Dell or HP very cheaply, with the understanding that the drive manufacturer will never see them or hear about them again. If Newegg has somehow acquired these drives and is selling them as retail products, it may be required by consumer protection laws to provide a limited warranty. Check your local laws. Where I am, there's a 14-day period after sale when a retailer is required to issue refunds for defective products. Said retailer may be resistant if they have no recourse themselves, as could be expected from unauthorized sales, so the purchaser may need to force the issue.

@@Starchface newegg & most pc stores sell bare drives, there is no printed packaging, no manual, no cables, these are constantly sold to end users so what are you talking about... one loophole stores (used to) use is that the oem windows license required the user to buy it 'as part of a system', the minimum being a hard drive, so a bare drive + $100 windows was what you can get in computer stores (as opposed to $250 windows + retail drive seen in bestbuy for example) i took a peek at one drive just to check some failure info, noticed multiple reviews say WD doesnt honor the warranty

I have a lot of WD hard drives, there is even one that is like 13 or more years old and still works. However not so long ago I got one of those 2TB WD Blue and it have a lot of bad sectors, annoying thing is that it start malfunctioning just after the warranty period expired.

If you don't need big storage drives the 1TB WD Blues (7200rpm) make great drives. They only have 1 platter and are therefore very simple from the mechanical standpoint, which usually translates to less frequent failures. I ve been using the the WD BLue 1 Platter drives for a decade now and didn't have a single sudden death with data loss. Ofc that is a limited sample size, but checking the HDD SMART values now and then, positioning the HDDs directly behind the front intake fan -> keeping temps below 40°C, paid off for me. I remember 2-3 drives displaying SMART warnings over the years, but thats it. I just backed up the data and replaced them within a few months.

I actually have a bunch of greens. Really like them for archiving data. I used to use them as a media drive but eventually phased them out to external drives and they have always worked like a charm. One of them (its actually a caviar green) is working like a charm after something like 7 years of use.

I ripped the WD Red 3.0TB out of my "My Cloud" and put it in my PC. I love it. Much faster than the abysmal 10mb/s I was getting over my network. (Even though I was using 1000mb/s switch and Cat6 to both the My Cloud and my PC)

Nathan Kam .... i have read it now but its not mentioned they did benchmarks or not of hard drives ..... also wd blue 2tb is 5400 rpm but it can be faster than 7200rpm 2tb black if platter density is more of blue .... that's my concern.

I used to use a WD black 3tb HDD, that system lasted a little over 5 years and it was abused. That hatdrive was spinning pretty much all day everyday. A very good drive. My new system is using a 1tb WB blue Ssd and damn is it fast.

I've still got one of the 2013 WD Blue 1TB (back when that was the maximum capacity for the series), and I've found that as a general purpose drive it was excellent. Though at the time I was coming off an early 100GB SATA1 HDD which is outpaced by most cheap USB sticks.

I've had two WD blues, one had sector errors after about 3 years and got a 2nd one to replace. I then went to WDBLACK and 0 problems in 7 years on two drives.

i brought a wd black 500 gb in 2013. it runs good. seen writting speeds of 160mb/sec in linux while i was wiping it. pretty nice for a platter disk. i think it's an 15k rpm one tho. might even have 2 platters.

I'm liking my new 6tb Black quite a lot because it's fast and is able to reparse files much more quickly than the 3tb Seagate it replaced (which, oddly enough, was also 7200 rpm, but with a now paltry 64 mb cache). It can be quite noisy at times, though... and - boy - noisy hard drives still make me nervous!

I have 3 of the purple drives in my PC. for running games off and for recording. So far they have been fantastic. I bought them based on the fact they should be reasonably fast but they are supposed to be for 24/7 operation which is how my PC is treated. Will see over time how they go. But so far have been awesome. Bought them late 2015.

I question the use of helium in HDD's. In my experience, helium will permeate anything, and trying to hold it over long periods is impossible. I have seen where it can even permeate metals. I know it works great in the short term for the reasons cited, but long term it goes. I admit I am not familiar with their manufacturing technology, and would be curious over the long term helium retention capabilities, but they don't seem to advertise how they do it. I have always used the WD drives, especially the enterprise types, RE etc. but utilizing helium just seems odd for long term use.

I may or may not have worked on helium drives. That definitely was a problem but it was overcame.

One thing to note, is that the recent low RPM Blue drives are mostly renamed old Green drives with a slightly modified firmware, and seem to be just as unreliable as the older Green drives. Also the new 1TB Black drive is actually an older Blue, and has mostly identical performance and noise properties, pretty much the only thing you get is the 5yr warranty. The 2TB Black and higher are actually what you expect from a Black drive: lots of noise, heat and high performance.

Haha, was just watching your WD comparison from 2014 the other day. WD Blue 1TB M.2 SSD will probably be my next upgrade. Great performance for the money, and I don't really need PCIe speeds for gaming.

...and 2 years later I can comment that I got a 512GB WD Black M.2 for the build I did at the end of 2017 and have been more than happy with it. Decent performance uplift over SATA SSD but at the time didn't cost nearly as much as the top end NVMe SSDs.

Been using WD Black drives for years now. Never had any signs of trouble, or failure. Now, it's a small sample of 1 user. But it's one more happy customer that will keep buying these as long as I still need hard drives. If it ain't broken - don't fix it :)

I have a 2tb WD blue drive @ 5400rpm. I picked it up for about ~50 and Ive since accelerated it with a 32gb optane module. Loads games in a breeze and gives me adequate room for video storage.

Great review. So if I'm understanding... in my NAS that I'm using strictly as my DVR storage of TV shows and movies that I record, it sounds like the Red would be the choice over the Black even though the Black has higher performance. Would you agree? Thanks.

I use the enterprise SAS red drives, I got two at a great price, and my surveillance server uses purple drives, so there is at least one user here!

Steve, I just got a 5400RPM WD Blue 4TB from my brother as a gift. He doesn't know any better! My question is, will the drive be okay for gaming assuming my OS is on a SSD? Been playing Ghost Recon Wildlands with an i7-6700, GTX1070,32gbddr4, and it seems to work fine. Except, I am getting lag spikes at times, but I'm reading it has something to do with the game's auto-save function as people with faster drives are having the same problems. Wd caviar blue, the 1tb 7200rpm hdd, still running fine after about 5 or 6 years. Meanwhile samsung 320gb hdd that came with pc gave up just after warranty time... Now thinking about either wd red pro or normal red or seagate barracuda pro 4tb hdd. Wd black seems also good choice but not sure about that.

I'd like to see an in-depth video on Seagate's SMR tech which seems to end up in their 5TB and 8TB external models. Large sequential writes can be fast, but small random writes really suffer. Also, turning disk write caching on via device manager bumped my throughput on large sequential writes from 30MB/s to 130MB/s. It took far too long for me to figure that out.

Be nice to get some lifetime/failure rates against these model ranges. Also if you're at altitude - don't use helium filled drives as they will leak and increase failure rates.

Are you WD customer service agent or something? You talk like them. I have question for you. I have 10TB music archive. I am sharing my files with Soulseek. My computer is 24/7 open and not always but most of time it does read due to uploads. And sometimes i download new music files. Now... Due to disk plates will be more on higher capacities and i want less head, surface fails, i will buy 4TB drives. In addition i am trying to buy CMR/PMR drives. WD40PURZ/WD40PURX (I don't know which one is PMR/CMR), WD40EZRZ and WD40EFRX are my options. So which one do you recommend me in these? Thank you.

If you build a RAID other than RAID0, use drives from different manufacturers. There are some drives that have firmware bugs and cause them to fail after exactly x hours of operation, like 4000h. If you use different manufacturers you lower the risk the multiple drives fail at once and can replace the failing drive while the RAID still works.

I used to go back and forth on WD Black and Seagate, but... My most recent foray into spinning rust has been with a Toshiba X300 8TB. It seems about as fast as a spinning rust drive can be expected to be and reliable enough.

*Steve Burke* Question: Would the WD Purple drive be a good match for upgrading the capacity and reliability of my Tivo Roamio Pro HD has a 3TB WD green drive. But due to my DVR having 6 tuners that have been recording content for over 2 years, I feel the drive has errors from near constant use. I thought a 6TB purple drive might be a nice replacement. If I want the most reliable hard drive and ssd, what should I get (I assume black for both, but what if we consider the enterprise drives like GOLD)? Price or value isnt an issue. I just want the most reliable PC possible since I have dozens of applications installed and manually configured.

Honestly, it makes little to no difference on how fast your ram is. The overall fps impact of ram speed is like 1-2 frames so nothing major. But in this case just get the faster ram.

I've been using a set of 2TB Samsung drives for almost 10 years now and they go fine. 5400rpm, and I run every game in my 200+ strong steam library off them. Only game I put on my SSD was GTA V, nothing else had any noticeable differences. The only downside is the almost 20 second spin up time 😂

For storage/backup Green WD drives are great: lower power, less noise, slower deterioration. It is not a big deal that transferring files from that drive to a SSD or the other way around takes a bit longer given that you can still use your SSD very well while the process is going on. Higher speed or lower speed for a mechanical drive, it is not realy an issue if you have a SSD with a decent capacity. Both are incredibly slow compared to a SSD (especially the random read/write). I agree that the price should also be lower given the lower RPM and such.

I want to buy some Red HDDs for my next pc,because they're more silent and I have some data that needs to be stored since it occupies my external drives at the moment.Will them be good for this or are there better variants?(I'll use them along side a 1TB 970 Pro as my boot drive and 2×1TB 860 Evo in RAID 0 as my game&rarely used programs)
