In previous videos, we searched for our perfect boat. Just a few weeks ago in mid-February, we found her. This week we're on our 1976 Tayana 37 (CT37) Taiwanese build designed by Robert Perry. She boasts a teak deck, roomy quarters, and needs a lot of work, and the projects have begun! sirenwilliams@thesirenslog.com
This week, we're leaving Port Canaveral, heading through the barge canal, getting back in the Indian River into the ICW, and heading south to Melbourne where we stop for fuel, and then anchoring up in Wabasso for the night. We're traveling with large dog, a small tender, an iffy outboard, and our rigging can now be sailed.
We're Siren and Captain Hal. We're surfers, we're fishermen, we're yacht brokers, we're boaters, we're captains, we're divers, we're ocean people, we're Floridians, and that's what our channel is all about!
We do hope that you'll subscribe and follow along!

My husband and I met the “Siren” by looking at a Marine Trader Labelle last fall. She was all business, knowledgeable, spent most of the day with us and never mentioned the channel. Found the channel a few months later, and we have enjoyed watching the new boat buying episodes. To those of you who want to write negative messages - Everyone has different levels of competence, risk taking and motivation. Respect requires me to assume positive intent, trust in their experience and value the adventure. Keep going!

If your backstay broke in what looks like calm conditions then it's a blessing. In heaver weather you could have lost the mast. So now you know the rig is basically unusable . So now your attention is on making sure the motor is reliable.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
Well that’s was always the mentality- we were supposed to sail at all! I was hoping to only sail if we ended up in a bad situation somewhere if the motor quit working and we needed to use the sails for quick navigation to avoid collision or something, but….
@robertbryant6939

He's right. Better to find out you can't rely on the sails as a backup, than think you can, and make decisions on that incorrect assumption.
@TheSirensLog

Well I had hoped they would ONLY be used in an emergency situation like to avoid collision. The surveyor had already told us in big bold letters not to sail the boat AT ALL. So… we knew. But Hal knew better. 🤷‍♀️ lol Men.

Terrific video! Good call testing some sails. Hal is right that in a pinch things could go from bad to worse if the backstay broke. Halyard will work or maybe there are running backstays. Hal maybe a fun episode would be to show the tools you brought knowing you can’t bring them all. Haha Bentley the unruly crew wanting off the boat. You two are great ambassadors to untie the lines and get off the dock!
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Jim!! Well the surveyor urged us not the sail the boat, even in light wind. I was hoping we could avoid sailing (Hal routinely had other plans) altogether and IF we found ourselves in a dangerous situation with the engine not working, maybe we could use the sails to navigate out of that situation- ya know, to like, avoid hitting something.

Reminds me of my earlier years, when I boldly took off from Marina Del Rey Ca in my first day as owner of a CT 41 Pilot House Ketch.. Foolishly alone to move my new boat to my new home of San Francisco!! Things went well until a squall came up in the middle of the night! 12 ft folling seas kept me up all night long!! Fortunately I able to button up in the pilot house and use the helm in there! It was all worth it when a beautiful dawn broke at sunrise in Monterey Bay with Dolphins all around the boat as i opened up to dry out. My first of many foolish adventures I would do over again in a heartbeat!! I am smiling right now as the thrill of my "bad decision" can still give me pleasure today!. There is something so dramatic watching the rusted hulls and hulks of boats abandoned. You are gliding by history on that waterway and I think about people who captained those boats to the end. The music chosen is fitting. I’m hoping you can make that boat seaworthy. I look at the channel of sailing magic carpet and the work they’ve been doing for three years and I don’t think I could ever do it. They will have a perfect boat at the end that will take them around the world but the years spent sanding and fiberglass and restoring isn’t something I was ever capable. I hope your boat won’t need that level of restoration or years of life.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Beverly! Well, we have a pretty good boat to start out with, and I do know the channel but I’ll admit I don’t really watch other channels enough to know what’s going on. But I did see a clip of theirs where they looked like they had the whole interior ripped out? Was that them? We don’t have to do that, only for the chain plates. Now the chain plates will be a big and expensive job, but it should be the last time it’ll ever have to be done. Then the rigging is pricey, but that’s gotta happen. That isn’t “hard” but it’s work. Our deck is going to be the biggest job and I’m still playing with ideas. Ideally it needs to be removed completely, but the more I think about it, the more I want to just button up the teak that’s on it and redo all the seams IF we can get the sealer sponsored to us somehow- otherwise it’s too expensive and not worth it. But if I can get several more years out of this teak, why not. If I can get it to stop leaking, and rebed all the fittings, then it won’t be hurting anything. Of course, that doesn’t help the value of the boat, but we don’t care as much about that.
@beverlyaslett7871
@beverlyaslett7871 6 месяцев назад
@@TheSirensLog it was the bulwarks rotting all the wood, even into the deck. I remember maya starting to work in the galley and found rotten sidewalls and mold. Everything was taken out and had to be fiberglassed over I saw maya change that day and she went missing from channel often and appeared so depressed. I really like your boat and am interested in your restoration and hope to see you with a strong safe boat. I love the teak also. You both have southern accents, where are you from? I like the way you guys work together on the boat. So many women are just the bikini accessory but I think you are co-captain. You also have the most beautiful hair in the sailing channel universe. I predict your channel is going to become popular. Never change from who you both are today. Authentic sailors. I do think your Akita needs a different home. Sailing in warm tropical waters is too much for his breed, too hairy. It’s a hard choice when you love them but if you find a good loving home he can be happy.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
@@beverlyaslett7871Thank you, that’s all so nice to hear. Yeah I dug pretty deep into that boat before we even did the survey and we definitely have some soft spots in some places but no major rot or bad bulkheads. I’ve had to replace bulkheads before, fiberglass isn’t them in and it’s something we can do if we need to, but I don’t think. That bulkhead aft of the head is the one that scares me but I think we’re ok. It seems solid. Yeaaaah, in deciding to keep Bentley, there’s still the question of whether or not HE enjoys it and can handle the life, and the moment we see him struggling with it, we will be back to finding him a loving home where he can run. So far he seems to enjoy it but he gets annoyed when he can’t get off the boat all day, and it’s very hard on us. He’s such a pleasure and we love him but MAN! Hahaha he’s tough. He likes the boat better than home, I know that. But I had told Hal that it would likely be impossible to circumnavigate with him and that I wouldn’t have kids if we kept him because he’s a handful enough. I couldn’t imagine having a baby or toddler and Bentley. No way. But Hal is starting to think about that more now. 😂 So we will see! Worst case scenario we just gave him the trip of his life and then he goes to his forever home. 😂

Some folks here may jump on me for about what I'm about to say... I have lived on boats, in busses, in vans, off grid rv's and in big trucks as an over the road professional truck driver. The Transient lifestyle is not pet friendly in my honest opinion. It can be straight up animal cruelty in certain situations. Some folks rely heavily on their animals for love and affection... I get it. But just be aware of what the animal may want and need. A home that doesn't move may be what they need...
@TheSirensLog

I totally agree. Honestly I wasn’t in favor of keeping Bentley. My cat (who I did TONS of research on cruising with over a decade ago and realized it wasn’t worth it) died a few years ago and Hal’s dog died a couple years ago and it was our chance to do our thing. Bentley was supposed to be a foster but it was SO hard finding him a home. He actually got really good once we got the boat so Hal started pushing to keep him, and I gave in. But I’ve been trying to make sure he fully understands how hard it’s going to be. People do it! But those people aren’t traveling around as they please either. It’s a whole new layer of complexity, but Hal is sure that it’ll be fine. So! For now, we’ve decided to be his forever home, BUT if I get the feeling that Bentley isn’t into this by the end of this trip, we will absolutely go back to the drawing board and find the home. I will say, though, he’s adapted VERY well and so far is enjoying it. He does have days where he can’t get off the boat and it shows. He gets moody about it, but that’s to be expected. But he loves the freedom of being able to live inside and outside as he pleases, always going to tender rides, adventuring to new places and meeting all the people and getting loads of treats off them (seriously every third person in businesses has a treat for him). It’s not perfect, but he’s happier here than he was at home. That I can’t say in honesty. We will see how the rest of the trip goes though!

@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
It was structurally good! Every boat will need new rigging eventually, every boat will need fitting rebedded on deck, the teak deck brought the price down, though we are aware it’s a huge job. As content creators, the boats uniqueness to other boats is a huge asset- not just for RU-vid, but for the content creation business I’ve owned for twenty years doing photo packages and video. Companies will pay for a backdrop like a teak deck and lots of pretty teak. It’s something they can’t easily get otherwise. So it’s easier to monetize. Of course it’ll cost more money to fix (the deck is the only expense that we wouldn’t have otherwise had) but we may get product sponsored to help rehab the deck anyway. I’ve already been working with sponsors as a competitive surfer, musician and content creator for 20 years so when we moved into more RU-vid content (the channel has been up for many years, I just disabled all the old videos I’d done for companies when we decided to do this series last year), we knew that getting product sponsored would be no issues at all? And it hasn’t been from the beginning. Of course we are still a small channel so getting $80k in FlexiTeek might be challenging 😂 but we do get a break on product quite often. It helps a LOT. Plus we get good prices on things, being in the industry, and we have great friends and resources, working in this industry, and we aren’t the type of people to hire help often. Many boat owners would hire people to do the rigging and everything but we will probably do it ourselves. Also, this is our business so everything we do is a tax write off. This all saves a lot of money others would spend. And the icing on the cake? We’re RU-vidrs and people love watching people work on their boats. Videos where everything is going smoothly don’t get the views that dramatic moment and boat refits get, generally speaking.

I might add a few more things. I wanted something bigger but my budget kept dropping as some major expenses kept popping up at once so I was more limited. We’d also been looking for quite a long time and we needed to buy while we were still in our off season for work. We also needed to buy as close to home as possible. So we were limited on all accounts! This one was within the budget, in our state, and both of us could still manage work as necessary while getting the boat ready to take home. AND although this boat needed a ton of work, Hal and I both liked it. Often I find boats that I like that he finds something about it that he doesn’t like- usually something mechanical. Mechanics is his department so he has to be willing to work on it. I sold my house to buy the boat but it’ll take both of us to keep it up and going and he will contribute in time. Finding a boat we both wanted wasn’t easy and this honestly wasn’t my first choice, but we did both love it and it’ll work for a good while! Hopefully we get her fixed up and can upgrade in a few years!

I heard the captain say more chain, but who is the captain?
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
The captain wasn’t considering that there was a dock 50’ off our bow. I’m not trying to get sued! I just bought the boat. Also, though Hal is technically the captain, I sold my house to buy the boat, and it’s been my goal for many many years, and I also have a lot of experience here, and more than Hal when it comes to smaller sailboats. So we do go back and forth when making decisions because there are some things I’m right about and obviously some things he’s right about. I do listen to Hal, but I’m also not afraid to question his decisions from time to time. I’m not going to sit here and name every time he’s messed up, but there are little things I’ve learned the hard way on in my teens living on sailboats and I’m done making those mistakes! lol

I watch you go by house after house with empty docks, nobody lets travelers dock?
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 5 месяцев назад
A lot of those docks are in water way too shallow for us! We’re 5’8” and need to keep a couple feet under us to account for tide and unreliable chart readings. Some people do rent out their dock! There are apps for that sort of thing, but it’s never cheap. Marinas aren’t cheap either. You’ll pay anywhere from $90-150 to be in a “cheap” marina per night, and while that doesn’t sound like much, doing it night after night would add up quick. We need every penny to put into the boat, plus Bentley can’t be on deck in new marinas or docks because he won’t stay on the boat. So being at anchor is cheaper, Bentley has more freedom, WE have more freedom, and a better view! Most cruisers prefer being at anchor, all for great reasons. It is nice to pull into a dock every once in a while and wash down the boat and clean up though.

@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
Yeah I looked at all the spots and measured out the biggest we could really get and then Hal stole the spot I was going to use and put dive tanks there. So I had to move the matting to the side which turned out better! It can easily be washed overboard from where it sits, and it’s between portlites, so in that regard it’s the perfect size logistically. I “knew” it was too small too but he’s proved me kinda wrong. 😑 lol He pees on it perfectly and he has a habit of walking and pooping at the same time so…. Sometimes the poop gets off the matting but it’s still on there and contained to that little area so it works! It’s actually good because he’s proved he can work with a much smaller space than we imagined!
