Hey there! We're Joe + Kalyn!
As online entrepreneurs, we thought, "why not work from home... on the road"? So in 2019, we bought and renovated a 2005 Jayco Designer Fifth Wheel, which took us to every state in the lower 48. But the economy hit our business especially hard after the 'vid, spurring us to pivot in new directions and try different strategies, including various RV work camping jobs!
Follow our full-time RV Life journey as we build back our bank accounts in order to fund the biggest RV trip of our lifetime-Alaska.

You should have a CB in your truck for the drive. FYI some of the "cheap" radio bandwidth is different for USA and Canada. Years ago they use to ask if you had one of the cheap radios, they don't seem to care anymore.

we went last summer and took our van, and luckily for us we broke our windshield in the town of North Pole and we were able to get it fixed at a shop 5 miles from where it happened. The big rigs just power down through that gravel, so stay as far away from them as you can, that is definitely a true statement.

Talking to my Alberta Veterinarian today, the FDA forms will not be ready for release until mid July. After the vet fills out the forms they will be sent to a CFIA Veterinarian for completion. Unfortunately for my Canadian/American families, this must be done for each entry into the USA. Sounds like time and money to me. Hope you’re enjoying the summer solstice up north!

I am so excited to think I may soon be getting a postcard from y’all. I admit I am starting to struck! lol Joe, you know I told you I’m a mother hen. So I gotta say this, maybe you should have your tires at least aligned. Unless things have changed, a new tire means you need that done and perhaps a tire rotation. Bad tire wear is usually because the camber, or toe, or caster is off. Dad was a mechanic and I worked at the garage to help him, it was a tiny town and if a farmer broke down in the field Dad went out to get them going. So I’d have to go over there and at least pump gas. I did get to work on our vehicles, patch tires, and loved running the car up on the hoist and doing an oil change and lube job (I’m dating myself when I say that!). I’m an old lady and this was 50+ years ago. Okay, mother nagging done! lol So excited… So thrilled for you to be experiencing this. If I was your age I’d be doing it in a heartbeat I think. When I was your age it wasn’t possible. Working from home was pretty new for our company but I was in InfoTech and could do it occasionally. So cool one can live anywhere and work. Praying travel mercies for you and the rest of the mini caravan.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 8 дней назад
Thanks for the info! I really do appreciate it along with your concern! So our plan on the tires has been this: New Shocks ✅ New Hubs, Brakes & Bearings (Was supposed to get done before we got to Canada but there was a mix up so it got delayed but is happening soon). Then getting the Axels looked at to see if anything is bent Generally, we were tackling a bunch of projects that needed to be done from least expensive to most expensive. Getting it into a shop is always difficult because....it's our house. So it upheaves life quite a bit, especially if it's for more than a day.
@ernestinebyrne9912
@ernestinebyrne9912 8 дней назад
I can only imagine. Too bad you can’t get a mechanic to bring all the equipment to you. There’s always something. I chuckle as I read over what I said. Oh my! I sound just like Dad. He was so adamant that I do everything just right. Drove me absolutely bonkers. So what happened? I turned into him!!! lol You two are so much fun to watch. As soon as I get the notification I drop what I’m doing!!!

If you do excursions in Alaska, the average we found in 2019 was $500 a person for a day. I can't imagine what the costs are now. Expect that 13K to disappear quickly even if you just do 2 or 3. Look for free stuff and there is plenty of it. The frost heave roads will get worse as you go and especially in Alaska. The road construction and fires are also the worst there. I warned you about the dirsty rig and I can say so far, you ain't seen nothing yet. ;-) Enjoy the journey.

@nashdiy8570
@nashdiy8570 8 дней назад
Why? My husband and I are looking to get a 5th wheel.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 8 дней назад
@nashdiy8570 - A lot of the newer models are having frame issues. Generally (very broad brush statement here) not built as solidly as some older RVs - especially if you plan on putting some weight in it (solar panels, batteries, extra water, etc.) That said - if you ARE wanting new there are a couple of brands that you might be interested in. @WildRVLife has a Brinkley and it seems to be quite solid. Alliance also seems to be quite solid. If you aren't planning on boondocking and are just going from RV park to RV park some of the issues of durability might not be as much of an issue for you. Now - whether you get old or new - just do research on that specific brand and year. You won't find anything that's perfect (ours sure isn't) but you may find some deal breakers. And IMHO....don't buy anything that was built under the umbrella of Thor. Thor buys brands and then ruins them. Just my 2 cents! -J
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 8 дней назад
For most brands I'd agree! This girl is a BEAST! -J
@badgerpa9
@badgerpa9 7 дней назад
@@nashdiy8570 If you will move it a lot and pushing the weight on it you should search "frame flex" and watch the many videos on the subject. If it will not be moving weekly it is not as big a deal. It is not just one brand of RV or just one trailer frame maker it is from trying to cut weight on the bigger rigs and possibly cheap metal in the frames.

When I PCS’d down to New Mexico I drove down the AlCan into Great Falls Montana in a severely overloaded Saturn SL2….lol. Very cramped, but I made it in 2 extremely long days. Started out in blizzard conditions. Good luck!

@@OpenRoading I hear that! Those I95 miles are a different kind of frustrating with traffic. I used to make a straight shot from NM to FL back in my early 20s, about 36 hours, but those highways were a little better than 95 traffic wise. Last time I tried to drive through the night though I realized those are things that belong back in my 20s…lol. These days I drive 8 or 9 hours and I’m ready to recharge.

It is sweet to see Texas dog Trinity (named after the nuclear bomb location?) and her new best friends going to Alaska to see the biggest mosquitos she will ever see. Hope the drive is fun, stay safe and healthy. I had a girl friend years ago that lived on the other side of a large swamp, my dad had worked building the roads and he said they sank a lot of trees into the swamp to make a base to start building the road. The road went like a roller coaster up and down all long it. I hope the roads are not to bad for you guys and even if you pull over for semi trucks you can still get a rock into the windshield. The rocks come off their tires.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have an F250 and fifth wheel. I’m so crazy they make a fifth wheel connection to a trailer for about $4000. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna do that just so I can pull it like a fifth wheel. You guys are awesome love your videos I’ve been watching from the beginning.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 8 дней назад
Love the 5th wheel! They are pricey though. I forget how much our install was but we had to go with a sliding hitch because of the short truck bed, but it's worked like a dream. I'm a little interested in the GenY hitch in the future. After seeing it in action I love how it allows a decent amount of shock absorption and gives you more space in the truck bed. Maybe someday. Not sure it would even work for my rig. -J

I noticed on the overhead shot of the two RVs that your friends have way more solar panels than you do. I would love to hear how that affects their boondocking experience compared to yours.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 8 дней назад
I'll have to check to see if they have a video about their solar... I think they do. The big thing is, they don't have to think about power. They have something like 900ah of battery so they can run their TV, their AC (which is a new style unit that doesn't actually take a lot of power) and whatever else they want with reckless abandon. 😂 Their fridge is residential as well instead of propane/AC. We still have to monitor our power usage if it looks like there are going to be cloudy days. So far - the angle of the sun hasn't bothered us too much for solar - but now that we are at the solstice and the sun is going to be lower and lower to the horizon each day we'll see how quickly we have to pull the mini generator out to boost us back up every now and then. Here are 2 videos they did on their system: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uupnhnfidQQ.htmlsi=ZYY1P9_dYM1XLCBp ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4KvnOtANXGw.htmlsi=UHBlcgg7gEOQkvxL

@@OpenRoading If money was not an issue, would you install the same type of battery/solar panel system on your RV?
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 5 дней назад
I love this question. I love this system but somethings have changed. I actually believe there are some better and less expensive batteries available now. The couple we are traveling with (@WildRVLife) just bought some batteries that take up less space but have more AH and they seem to be a quality battery! But back to your question - with unlimited cash, I would add a few more panels and batteries. If I could go back and have done something differently from the start I would have gotten a bigger inverter/charger. Ours is big and handles loads decently, but getting a 3000w one off the hop would have made our system easier to expand in the future in my opinion. I also would have hired an electrician to make all my wires so that I was more confident in their connections. We've never had an issue but I would much prefer those ends to be crimped on the wires with the correct tools. -J
