Completely agree - it's just daft - but it's also really puzzling (and frustrating) as to why so many - including professional pundits - have adopted it. How did that happen? I'm pretty sure Messi can't win anything on his own. His contribution may be great however. But it's still a whole 10 other players who made that team win anything - not just one guy. The fact is that Messi/Ronaldo are goats DESPITE not winning a UCL or WC - trophies are the goal of all players but it's the other 10 who all helped you get there. You can be the greatest and not win a WC. Cruyff didn't but is considered one of the all time goats.

I hope for the sake of football that they don't win. They are the most ugly and despicable team to watch at this tournament. Their behaviour, fouls, fighting and treatment of the Netherlands in that last games sums up the Argentine way. They've always played like that and that's why I can never respect them. Of course the media completely ignores this because it doesn't fit their narrative of it being Messi's moment. The bias this tournament to him has been disgusting. They lost to Saudi Arabia, barely beat Australia and won on the toss of a coin against the Netherlands. They are really not a good team at all. Whereas you say he wasn't the best player for Portugal during the Euro, it can be debated (Pepe was solid, Rui Patricio was great, Quaresma was decent etc) but a big portion of the sport community will look at CR7s contribution and see the importance it had. 2 nice goals vs hungary to get them to the knockout round, an assist to Nani vs Iceland I believe, a rocket header vs Wales and a shot/assist to Nani to book their spot in the final. If Messi is considered the best footballer (natural talent), what does it speak of CR7 (a trained product) competing for near 2 decades at the highest stage?
