We Made 3D printed Hubs For BMX Bikes And They Actually Work! Matty Cranmer fully designed a set of BMX hubs and 3d printed them and it's one off the most original hubs I've ever seen. We built them up on a bike and tested them to see just how strong they are by doing a bunny hop, a barspin, a 180 to fake and then a 5' drop to flat and they didn't break! Weaver excited to design and build more BMX parts and if you have any suggestions please put them in. the comments!

if you can scale that up by 2%, you can do what's called lost PLA casting...you dunk the plastic print into a ceramic mud similar to drywall compound, then burn out the plas5ic in a kiln. the remaining ceramic shell can accept molten aluminum, and the extra 2% dimension allows the hot metal to cool, and the part will shrink to the desired size. I have the gear to do this at home if you're interested in seeing these in metal. I'd just need a few hub prints to do it.

Yeah, he can make a mold and then melt and pour the metal. That'd be the easiest way that doesn't involve fully machining it. I doubt he'd get a lathe (I think they have a drill press already) to do all the machining. Pouring it and cleaning it up after is the most accessible way.

Melt alloy cans in ya crucible and poor it into a sand clay Mold casters sand, tidy up with a dremel your logo would even boss onto the alloy if you done it fairly good, practise makes perfect sure monster have the cans to melt somewhere, monster alloy crainer hubs

Rocket motor design engineer here - I'm legitimately impressed. Well done Matty! Matty, you could send the tinker CAD file to a local machine shop and for a few hundred bucks you could get them to machine it for you. That would be a cool follow up

i'm a rookie 3D pew printer. we use STL files, how easy do those translate, or is that what CAD uses too?

@@Fausto_4841 you could read in a .stp file into a g code generator (solid works, Siemens, or other) and then create the CNC programming.

There's carbon fibre reinforced filament that is insanely strong. It's basically the same as the material used to make the A380 wings. If you get a receiver made out of steel or titanium for the drive pawls to engage with then 3d print with the carbon reinforced filament you'd have some insanely light and strong hubs. Be careful with the filament though. The cheap stuff ($50 au per kg) won't be great. The aircraft filament is closer to $180 au for a 1/2 kg roll. But a bit of hunting around and you'll find the good stuff.

Just be aware it’s not actual carbon fibre as the fibres are no longer than 1mm. Yes it’s stronger than normal PLA though. You also need a lot of tuning to get it right so experiment with different temperatures and extrusion heights. Also keep in mind carbon fibre and glow in the dark and whit filaments are more abrasive so you’ll need to swap out your nozzle more often. However you can put in a hardened steel nozzle and just use that for all prints. Or if really never want to replace it a ruby nozzle is $$$ but should last many many years!

Carbon fiber filament is more to help stronger filaments that tend to warp from warping. It won't help with layer adhesion. The carbon fiber will stiffen a finished print though. Continuous strand carbon 3d printing is a different animal and creates really strong prints but requires a special printer that costs thousands.

I love how Mattys creative juices are flowing…. If he keeps it up it will flow over into his riding as well… Also, you can create it in the cheap plastic, compact sand around it and pour metal into it, it will melt the plastic and go into the gap where the plastic was leaving you with metal parts…. Have fun guys and play around with it… Maybe even Scotty can create parts, hell I would buy some MCV or CSD parts

I’m a mechanical designer(no engineering degree) for work & 3D print as a hobby and love this!! I hope Matty pursues this further, would love to work for his bike parts company one day!!

With the right material like CF-Nylon(PA) or Polycarbonate(PC) /CF-PC you could easily make a brake lever or the arms that grab the brakes. Pedals could also work, bar ends, hub guards, and probably lots more. The key to 3D printing is material choice, good print settings, and print orientation. Understanding how your parts are going to be stressed and printing/designing them with that in mind can make them almost as strong as a conventionally made part. Well done Matty, cant wait to see what's next!

It crazy to see Matty grow over all these years. I remember watching old vids of the crew and matty reminded me of my little brother lol sometimes bratish. But to see him grow into the man his today just make me proud. Just like watching my own little brother come into his own. Not to mention MC has grown into one of my favorite riders. So well rounded and diverse it’s insane. All the crazy and weird tricks he has done just blows my mind! Keep up the great work guys!

Valve caps are a fun thing to print, can do all kinds of cool stuff, Also plastic hates to be at 90 degree angles, try to triangulate everything you can

he's still have to use a raft and supports, but it will be more robust if you can rotate the file 45 degrees. the best pews are printed at an angle like that.

Great job Matty! You should try and make a sleeve that would fit in a metal step ring for the driver to grab on. It could be an insert that slips into a key in the plastic. Good work! I’m hoping to see these progress and other cool ideas you may have!

he could do a progressive print where you stop it at strategic parts so you can put metal inserts that will eventually be sealed inside.

As someone who runs the 3D print lab of a makerspace I can say the potential of what you can make with a 3D printer is second to no other tool. It's the single most useful machine you can buy. Especially when you get into more engineering grade materials and ditch PLA.

@@CNYKnifeNerd you can't go wrong with an Ender 3. it's about 200$ but deals are everywhere for like 150. tons of pewpew goons use it, it's kind of the hobbyist standard.

@@CNYKnifeNerd If you can afford a Prusa they are the best out of the box and amazing tech support. If they are too pricey an Ender 3 is a great start but will most likely need some minor improvements.

Hey, there are flexible filaments for 3D printers that would work well for printing bar ends.. You could make the most perfect handlebar grips ever, perfectly shaped for your hands and stuff. I bought a 3D printer about a year ago, and it's just awesome when you get into it and learn a bit of 3D software so you can start cranking out your own inventions. It truly feels magical making a digital model just turn into a real thing in a matter of hours. Start the printer, go play some video games and eat dinner and stuff, go back to the printer and shazam, there's a physical object sitting in there... I just can't get over how crazy that is even though I understand fully how it works.

3d-printed chain tensioners (for frames without integrated ones) might be cool. Low risk of anything going catastrophically wrong and someone getting hurt. Or maybe a 3d-printed gyro assembly, or 3d-printed brake pads lol.

Matty, in Cura, check the box for generate supports. You can then print things that would need to hover without the rest of the part underneath. "Tree supports" work really well, and dont add a ton to the build time.

you can 3d print metal alloys now. The Swiss supercar company, Koenigsegg 3d print the titanium exhaust for the rear of the car. I would guess their printer is HUGE money lol. You guys should also check out the spokes made out of, I think, dyneema. Used to make sails. Each end is metal, but the majority is fabric. I've only seen them used for high end MTB wheelsets though. The name is Berd Spokes. As soon as I saw them, I thought, these would be perfect for BMX. Light, simple, and shock absorbing without deforming.

Pivotal seat posts? Maybe pegs out of ABS? Brake levers? Pedals? Maybe get real risky with it and make a stem? I got a creality ender 3 max and it's like 300 bucks and sick. 500 is actually pretty expensive for a starter setup. I wouldn't use PLA for anything BMX related. I'd only use ABS.

I made pegs out of black abs (or pvc, whatever it is called./ the stuff that doesn't shatter that they used to use for plumbing.) I put them over some cut off metal pegs. They were good for standing on, but that's about it. Any grinds would destroy them in a few minutes.

Make a handlebar end cap that looks like the rubber button that you see on small 2 cycle gas engines, that primes the engine. Find a broken weed eater or blower and take the rubber push button off so you can see how it's made. And, then make it big enough to fit the handlebars.

Those hubs are awesome Matty, I do 3d resin printing and I print small parts for plastic model cars, I wonder if you redid your hubs with putting some kind of metal insert inside where they got chewed up, probably gonna need a cnc machine for that but it would be cool, good job dude

Try a making the drive side accept press fit metal ratchet ring for the driver to engage with. Could last longer that way with a larger support area similar to a spline drive insert for the driver to then bite onto metal

The older Mavic Deemax wheels had the straight through spoke hub just like that one side of Mattys rear hub. I still rock mine and I have lots of extra spokes for it haha good job Matty!

Polymer on it's own will just crumble on any bike, the reason "plastic" pedals don't die is because they're reinforced with a fibre. Usually glass. And also use a much better polymer than the likes of PLA (bottle plastic) used here

That is the coolest looking rear hub I have ever seen, looks like a nuclear cooling stack. It would actually be pretty simplistic to make in metal with the right tools. I hope Matty does some research to make it happen.

they could not make bars on that size dremel printer, but they probably wouldn't risk it. serious bmx guys will only run full chromoly or in some cases Ti frames, forks, and handlebars. Max printed a sprocket on Alf Mancuso's channel.

Suggestion. Place threaded metal tube inside and machine a threaded pawl holder. Sort of a metal sleeve inside. That would fix the stripping problem. Best of luck.

Grab yourself a de-burring tool off a,axon. Really helps to clean up some of those rough edges. Good on you for getting into 3D printing. Nice to have a budget printer with an enclosure. Means can print some filaments like abs or exotics. Personally I’m a fan of PETG over PLA for tougher parts. Keep at it and can’t wait to see where you get to next. Look into an airbrush kit for finishing your prints even fancier!

Awesome job. Printer is a good value reasonable quality unit but it needs dialling in. Do some calibration tests and then again when you change print material. Lots of resources online to help you get cleaner and stronger prints. Metal inserts might go a long way towards a reliable home built product. Metal rings inside and outside the hub cylinder and flanged tubes for the spokes. Experiment with different filaments. No need to destroy your nozzle with carbon fiber infused nylon straight away. PETG, ASA or polycarbonate are some interesting options to try. Your 3D model could be used to CNC mill or lathe from a chunk of metal too. Have a nice billet aluminum piece. Model might need some changes to use and obviously you'd need someones expensive machinery to do the job. Skill up that 3D modelling and you can have your designs manufactured in various ways.

I saw they make fabric/composite string spokes for mountain bikes now. Might be a cool idea to combine the string spokes with your plastic hubs. Then you wouldn’t have metal on plastic.

You need a CNC lathe with live tooling to make that hub out of any metal, or metal 3d print it, would be cool out of titanium powder, good job.

I think you did a great job. The rear hub looks similar to hubs that were made in the late 80s, or the 90s. I can't remember if they were made by TNT, or some other company, but they were RAD. Both sides of the hubs had the look of the driver side of your rear hub. I tried to find them on Google, but no luck. Anyways, Great Job Matt. You came up with a cool idea. I wish I could find the hubs I am talking about. I think you would Dig them. 😉

if anyone wants to get into 3d printing, the Ender 3 is the best hobbyist printer, it's got a larger printing area than Matty's Dremel, and you can find them on sale for about 150$. this is the printer than the 3D pewpew goons use, most files are written for that printer.

If you have a 3d model of it you can absolutely get that part machined. Look for a CNC shop or even a RU-vidr that may want to collaborate on it

I think you could maybe keep the plastic for the next version, but for the engaging there would need to be one metal ring with teeth on the in and outside which is then put into the hub.. If the driver engages against the metal ring, the ring will put equal pressure on all of the plastic teeth. Also there's then not gonna be space for plastic to fall of and fly around in the hub

That is really cool I would ride a hub designed by Matty. 3D printing is a ton of fun you might want to get a ruby nozzle for your printer and print with the carbon fiber infused filaments, they are supposedly a lot stronger.

That's is an amazing idea, can you do sprocket next time. We used polymer blend in injection moulding to make really hard plastic parts that can contain a high water pressure maybe that might help 🤔

Sprockets need to be pretty hard or they won't last.

Matty, check out shapeways. You can send them a file and have it printed in other materials(metal). It's not cheap though.

i did this two years ago 3d printed a sprocket and looked into flexi filament to print grips
