The light part looks like some supernova. I paused at that frame too, the next frame was less interesting, but still quite amazing that we got 2 whole frames of lightshow.

This one’s actually sorta easy for anyone to recreate. It’s not the glass that caused the flash but the pressure generated between the two spheres. You can actually burn a piece of paper of you hold it up and clap two steel balls together with your hands due to the mass being transferred into a tiny spot causing extreme but temporary heats. At those speeds and mass I can only imagine that spot was temporarily the temperature of the surface of the sun.

@@gilliesiut2332 it's the same theory as the Mantis or Pistol shrimp when it hits its prey. Only difference is that the force underwater splits the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the water to create that flash of energy.

The thing is - that's something you can get with spheres in general. Because when you strike two hard spherical objects into each other, there is only the SMALLEST point of actual contact between them at the edge of the curve, and that instigates a moment of intense heat. Just look up 'burning paper with steel balls' to see the same kind of thing on a smaller scale. So with these glass balls - with how fast they were chucked at each other, I assume with all the force of that collision collecting at such a tiny point of contact is what resulted in the two of them not just sparking but utterly annihilating each other instead of just going Coney Joney.

@@DeadeyeDailywhen I was researching this I found that triboluminescence occurs when things are broken and the electrons are jumping from one piece to another as the pieces separate. Piezoluminescence occurs when something releases charge due to a collision or vibration. They are quite similar!

I haven’t watched the video yet, but are we sure its not a compression artifact? There are two waves of air being smashed together and super compressed between the two balls, which could flash ignite the oxygen in the air. Very much like the Mantis Shrimps bullet punch

Upon further research, this seems to be more in line with triboluminescence. Light energy created when objects are mechanically crushed, ripped apart, etc. Glass is, apparently, not inherently piezoelectric but can be manipulated to be under certain conditions (like this video?). Turns out there's not a lot to find regarding the science of colliding two large solid glass spheres online.

That's what I thought, same thing they use quartz crystals and a small striker to ignite grille lighters, but on a massive scale.

The basketball was already torn open when it came out of the tube. The tear is on the opposite side of camera view. Pretty cool to watch though!

Someone else said the basketball was torn already, so that's really the only way it could have gotten past the glass ball, if in fact, it was behind the glass ball and not in front

I knew exactly what the effect was as soon as I saw it, triboluminescence has been observed in a lot of high speed videos on youtube. Notably, on the slowmo guys channel more than anything.

@@legro19 That's a completely different effect. You're spalling a small bit of steel from the ball which heats that tiny fragment up immensely, and given the small size and availability of oxygen, it turns into a spark. Glass doesn't have the mechanism to produce a spark in the same way that steel does. I mean, you're trying to contradict something that's absolutely science based, repeatedly demonstrated, and explained beyond a reasonable doubt by comparing it to how a completely different material reacts to similar forces. That's not going to work out well for you man.

@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper You can do the same thing with 2 glass ball just put some glove. All you need is a very hard material hardened steel or glass don't make much diff. Since the contact surface is very tiny and the material don't deform the kinetic energy is transformed in heat wich vaporize ( turn in plasma ) the matter at contact point. But just seen sound travel at 4500 m/s in glass so yeah the shock wave can have go trough the ball in a single frame. But it's still doesn't look like any triboluminescence i have seen.

They were just adorable dealing with the cold. My Canadian senses say, if they are getting big flakey snow like that it's not proper cold yet.

They're aussies, most of em have never seen snow and cold for them is spring for us XD. I give em props for how well they took it. A bit of shivering in the beginning, but overall they mellowed down, even keeping their scarves off most of the time.

They come from Perth Western Australia, where for a few days this week, it reached 47°c or 116.6°f in some parts. If they're going from a disgustingly hot summer to that, they've done really well, I'd be an ice block 😂

They're also wearing "winter" clothes instead of real winter clothes. The locals with a hoodie and a Carhart jacket over top are way warmer than the guys who were wearing thermal sportswear nonsense.

It wouldn't have been as awesome without the snow. ❄

Phenomenon, meaning they sparked when they impacted? Not really rare, just go mine some rocks with a pickaxe.

@@GaijinGamerGirl I've seen it happen too, but what happens there is different. When hitting the rocks with the pickaxe, friction occurs on both surfaces. The heat produced in that friction is enough to heat the metal chips that come off the pickaxe (and possibly the metal from the rocks), which are the sparks that are observed. It is something similar to polishing metal with a grinder. The triboluminescence phenomenon seen in this video has another cause.

People underestimate things like the speed of light of the speed of breaking glass. The speed of light is many many times faster than glass. Slomo guys have a video called "The longest 5 seconds on youtube" which is a stationary, perfectly in focus, 19 1/2 hour video, a full raw dump of the entire 5 seconds of recording at 343,000 FPS of a pyrex glass measuring cup breaking. At 343,000 FPS the 3-4 inch pyrex glass handle breaks in under 5 seconds out of the NINETEEN AND A HALF HOUR recording. Even at 82k FPS, no one was seeing anything of value.

This has been the strangest winter in a long time. it was -50 a few weeks ago, and the last few days have been in the 50s. The lack of snow is just flat weird. I hope it starts snowing and keeps snowing soon, otherwise, this is gunna be a very dry summer

They are totally different phenomena. Whats happening with the ballistics gel is a diesel explosion. The bullet creates a huge cavity of air and antomized oil and polymer. As that cavity collapses, the air heats up to the point of igniting the oil and polymer in a small explosion, like ina diesel engine. I’m surprised they weren’t aware of that. As someone that watches a lot of gun videos, it happens basically every time clear gel is shot with a rifle and there are a ton of super slow mo videos covering it.

I don't think the explanation aligns with the evidence. When the charges recombine, the electrical discharge ionizes the surrounding air, causing a flash of light." It seems that the flash is occurring well before any material fracture could occur. And is material "fracture" even possible with ballistic gel? Perhaps on some technical level... It seems as though the effect is purely a result of the electrical forces at play, not mechanical. It's just too fast. Maybe the introduction of small, disparate voltage potentials is rapid enough to induce a temporary plasma state or other kind of extreme photon excitation, nearly instantaneously, until that voltage potential is equalized.

Montana is far from the Midwest… but still made for an epic video nonetheless
