I feel your pain my man. I have been through sooooo much of the trials of doing things twice or more , come backs, etc because of defective parts trying to save the customer money with non OEM parts. The pain of getting a phone call from a customer's car you just worked on with the same problem just kills the day huh lol. I was debating on buying a used engine yesterday for a customer's car for real cheap w/no warranty but I canceled and decided to go for the more expensive one with a warranty because I just imagined the car coming back to haunt me if I go with the lower price engine. Sometimes cutting corners because of price will cost us more in the long run. I learned many lessons the hard way, My point: The school of hard knocks sometimes will cost you a heavy tuition. Keep your head up brother and keep SMASHIN through the pain.

Doesn't matter, there is a rate book where all the labor hours are listed, so the time is locked in. Then there is the going labor rate at the dealerships in the area around you, it's listed in the books too. You can only get up to what the going hourly rate is and no more, at the allotted labor hours listed. In this case, they only pay half the hourly rate.

Early 80's I worked for an auto parts store - we went through 3 different rebuild companies trying to find one that the rebuilt parts held up for more than 30 days. Hey Eric, you should consider getting a cheap loaner car for your customers. I recently got one and its been fantastic. No more getting update phone calls every 30 min reminding me that they need the car by 3 and to make sure its ready and "just checking in". Customers are much happier and relaxed and so am I. Peoples attitude completely changes. It used to be that if the work on the car took longer than expected I had to make the dreaded call and have them tell me "I need the car now", "How am I supposed to get to work?", "I can't afford these repairs if I can't get to work", "I have to pick up so and so." Now its "No worries, take as much time as you need, what ever it costs it costs. Just let me know when its ready."

Nutz4Gunz45 Yeah the Acura Honda place o go to gives out free loaners. Super convenient and people won't mind if it takes a little longer. All the cars are all old old with 100k plus but they are clean and that's all that's needed.
@SmittySmithsonite
@SmittySmithsonite 7 лет назад
That's a great idea, Nutz. Only problem with that is, here in the Northeast, it would cost you a FORTUNE to do that. In MA for example, the state charges sales tax on the initial sale, then excise tax yearly based on the vehicle's value. $75 for a title, then $60 for 2 year registration. Then there's the insurance - that's the real killer. You could get a $200 beater, fix it enough to make it usable, and pay $1,600 a year just to keep it on the road. You'd definitely have to weight the cost/benefit ratio there. Eric would probably need 2 or 3 of them with the volume of business he does.

Just make it worse, and some customers just think we are trying to half fast our work. Now i just buy my parts from a parts store thats called XL auto parts in houston. and they sell a bunch of OEM and a reasonable price. my philosophy has been i rather want my customer to be a little mad that they payed more the repair. and not deal with it again. compared to being happy for the cheap price but once it messes up they come back pissed due to the part messing up. trust me a HATE the bad days. but ill tell you one thing, what always makes me feel better are some of the comments i read on youtube.

A reason the starter may have failed to work properly the first time and then worked properly every consecutive time, is that the Bendix gear probably stayed engaged with the flywheel the entire time, even when you weren't trying to start it. The Bendix gear was probably not properly lubricated, sticking, and takes more force to engage. When you start the car, the flywheel that is starting to spin quicker is generally enough to force the bendix gear back into its rest position. The quick fix would be to spray some high quality lubricant on the bendix shaft and be done with it. Or even do that before installing them.

And I will never buy anything mechanical eg rotates or is integral to operation from Advance, Autozone, o'Reilly's etc. Before I knew better I used to get parts from Trak Auto, talk about horrible. Multiple radiators, alternators starters heater cores, brand new hoses blowing. Last year I bought a transmission mount from Oreillys because I could not get it at NAPA. Lasted one year and the rubber let go. OEM went 13 years. Fortunately I learned the trick of stuffing heater hose in there to solve that problem. But still.

You guy's really think that Rock Auto is not selling you the parts as Advance Auto, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, Napa and other online distributors? Yeah I'm sure each one has there private exclusive parts maker that only sells to each one. Look a remanufactured is a remanufactured and O.E. is an O.E. but these place's get most of there part's from the same maker's with their own labels or brands. Most parts store offer O.E. but when you look at their screens and see a remanufactured for 1/2 the price. It's hard not to take the bait. Look at Walmart even their American products are made in Asia somewhere. We expect quality at a Walmart price. That is just not going to happen anymore. Because these companies will keep moving factories to what ever country can produce their products the cheapest. That's a fact folks.

Practically each part, like a starter, fuel pump, or alternator is custom built for a specific car and platform, and that is the Fault of the manufacturer, not the customers who is getting poorer every year.... 🧐 Are you Winning yet??? ......because the 225+ million slave labor class isn't, and never will in a "predatory capitalist" society, that is unregulated, and has no oversight or accountability. You ain't lying about remanned stuff, as well as 'new'.. I dumped Advance yrs ago...and went to O'Reilly's.. Well, I have had 0 luck with their new starters and alts. In fact, I did 3 of them on a '12 Caravan 3.8 with the clutch type pulley, before I got 1 that didn't scream. Same deal on a Camry, and that thing was not cheap! Problem is, the remanned crap isn't limited to the aftermarket. I did 2 racks from Mopar on a Dakota 2wd, before I got 1 that was tight. I mean, get it installed, algin it, and it's all over the road like an old worn out steering box in a '70s Mopar driven by a drunk. Now, I will say that I've never used them since 2000, and don't know if they even offer remmaned racks anymore, but you get my point. 1 last gripe, since we're griping. I replaced a 4L60E in a Chevy truck, a remanned Delco unit. Well, it was a 4x4, and since you've done a vid on 1 before, you know that they ain't all that fun to do.. Anyhow, get it in, pour in 7 qts, and it does nothing. No noises, no nothing, and I was p^ssed. Yank it out, call um up, and got another 1. I told them that I wanted to know what was wrong with the other 1. 8 months later, no lie, they call me back. Turns out that 'something wasn't installed correctly' in the valve body.. What that something was, God only knows, and He ain't telling! Gee thanks! So, what do we do as techs? I dunno.. Pat our heads as we rub our bellies that all is well when we install something? Give it the ol 'sign of the cross' on its way out? You tell me!

A rep from a major rebuilder explained how rebuilds are done. They don't dissamble a single alternator/steering gear/master cylinder and then put it back together with some new parts. They dissamble large quantities of used units, sort out the usable parts, and then assemble units from those parts. Depending on the brand there may be some new brushes, seals, or bearings but the majority of the parts are used from multiple donors. That's why an unmolested used part from a junkyard is often better than a rebuild.

I’ve worked at oreillys, advanced, and autozone. I can tell you from experience, advanced gets the most amount of returns/ warrantied out parts. Oreillys second, and autozone third. Autozone definitely has the strongest team behind their quality control for their brand (Duralast) and I rarely saw customers coming back with complaints. Also, you can’t beat a lifetime warranty! But they do support dorman, you just have to make sure to choose a different brand. Napa auto parts is also really good, they have the closest to OEM parts there. Usually for anything electronic, I’d stay with Duralast. Hope my two cents gives you some insight.

As a parts guy in the trucking industry, I can 100% relate to this. We sell far more of a given "reman" part with a core charge than we do of the same part, but new. I hate messing with cores. The idea of it is sustainability and recycling, which I'm always for. I live here too, so I don't want to pollute more than I absolutely have to, but come on! Reman parts are fine, IF they're remanned CORRECTLY. The problem is they're sent back to Asia in all the empty shipping containers that brought in WalMart's inventory, and they're "remanufactured to the highest quality" by an unskilled, untrained, and sometimes child labor force who's paid $12/mo or something. Of course they'll give a lifetime warranty! Bring back the mom and pop rebuilders who do things right!

He finally managed to source me an OEM (it was a mid year change so not many out there) it is three times the price and I consider it a bargain. I always buy the best parts I can get it is far cheaper in the long run. I consider Dorman parts something I would only put on a car I am getting rid of. I do a lot of my friends cars and only use Dorman if they don't have much money.
