for a wizz the bullet would have to be pretty close to you since the cracking of the bullet (super sonic) is generally louder, if its a wizz from far the bullet is traveling toward you at a slower rate, if its a crack the bullet passed by you going faster than the speed if sound creating that crack noise you would hear (super sonic)

if you hear a whizz it just means the bullet was traveling less then the speed of sound, the crack is only heard if the bullet is faster than sound
