Out of all the plumbing, electrical, and mechanical trade work, sheetmetal ductwork took the the most time and effort. Having 3 different pieces of mechanical equipment to integrate certainly doesn't help, but gosh was this project involved. And there's still a finale yet to come!

Do you plan on adding a Humidifier for winter use to normalize the humidity?

@FJB2020 potentially but will see how dry it really gets first!

Great video! I am excited for each little milestone you two make. You are earning that awesome home and homestead. I am sure every time that HVAC system kicks on you all will be saying, "We did that!"... I guess you will also say that when you flush a toilet or turn on a light too.

You're not wrong about that! We have a very strong appreciation of the work it takes to get a light switch to turn on 😄

Why self-build? It is literally a life-defining experience. I've mentioned before that my dad (and I when old enough, well into the project) built his own 3 BR ranch with no prior construction experience, just mechanics and general carpentry. He was a depression kid. Never graduated high school. When he was near the end of his life at 90+, still, with my mom, enjoying the living room he built, he would (for the thousandth' time) say "I look at this, and I can't believe I built it." He had the same approach you do: minimize debt (I think is mortgage was $12k in 1960 dollars), study and learn from others (he would spend weekends touring every house construction sites within 40 miles), and do everything the very best way. 55 years on, the house is still in great shape with only normal maintenance. My sister lives there and loves the place. Perhaps one of your children will do the same, if life goes that way.

Amazing story, and it was so much harder to learn everything back then without the internet! That sounds just like Elaina's grandfather, who passed recently at 94 and built his debt-free split level rancher at his own pace in the 70s (took about 4 years while working full time). He enjoyed it until his last year, and it's still a wonderful home with so much craftsmanship. He loved watching our videos because it brought back all the memories. We've also visited probably a dozen jobsites for the same type of learning - both what and what not to do 😅 I pretty much can't walk through a house now without an urge to check out the utility room 😆

Interesting! Of the plumbing and hvac that was just installed in our house build, I thought the duct work looked the easiest 😄. But our house is a box, so it's pretty straight forward 😉. I would have loved to have tried installing it ourself, but sadly we are on a tight time crunch and only so much time to do these things ourself 😢

Haha yeah it's all the thought that went into design (load calcs, duct sizing, register locations) and attention to detail on sealing & insulating that makes it a process. For design, most residential contractors pretty much wing it with rules of thumb and past experience. Unfortunately this haste means many residential HVAC sytems are installed with ductwork issues that will forever hurt performance 😞 i.e. improper sizing, poor air sealing, oval pipes in exterior walls / ductwork outside conditioned space where avoidable, no diagnostics or balancing after startup, etc.

@@MasonDixonAcres it's very true that you are just another job to them. When you do it yourself you have the drive to ensure every detail is right 😁

Exactly, no one will care as much as you. Getting things done as fast as possible has become the most important thing in construction, for better or worse

1. Are you considering the garage/utility area conditioned space or exterior space? I was trying to understand why you used S-Majrex on the utility ceiling there and not S-Majvest? 2. Since the upstairs apt is not a large space, would you have been allowed to use a simplified design with single incoming and outgoing ducts, or you had to use more because there were some separate rooms?

We'll have more details on all the SIGA in its own video coming up soon! Short answer is because the upstairs is all living space and downstairs is all garage/utility, the strategy is to encapsulate the upstairs with Majrex as the air barrier to isolate from unwanted garage air and make upstairs as airtight as possible for best IAQ control. The Zip is our primary air barrier on the exterior, which is what Majvest would serve as if used the same function. Majvest is vapor open WRB and doesn't have the same directional permeability as Majrex, which is why Majrex was used for the interior air/vapor control layer.

Did you consider using any ductboard instead of sheet metal? I wonder if it would have been faster or easier. It definitely would have had sound deadening advantages. Also, I really admire your attention to detail!
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres 11 дней назад
Much appreciated! Once I saw a sample of fiberglass ductboard I did not want to use it, despite the sound and pre-insulation advantage. Main reasons being the fiberglass dust that ends up in the airstream from corner cuts and takeoffs, and the fibrous material coated on the inside seemed like a dust/dirt magnet. I talked to one contractor who said they paint the cut edges with mastic to seal off the dust, but I can see situations when you need to make cuts for takeoffs etc. and can't access the cut edge to take that sealing step. Talked to other contractors who refuse to use it for the same reasons, sheet metal only. If we weren't as tedious with air sealing & insulating due to the fact it's adjacent to the garage (despite the garage being conditioned), it would go much much faster - the future build will have all ductwork in fully conditioned space. Also not sure how ductboard reacts if water ever got into it, but hopefully that never happens for either system 😅

🤔 Making this comment early in the video so may explain itself later. But isn’t the ERV supposed to have an outside fresh air feed? I may have misunderstood what you said.

@MasonDixonAcres 18 дней назад
Yes it has two exterior hoods, one for intake and one for exhaust. Check out our ERV video for details

haha we have quite a backlog of long form editing, short form is more current. It also allows us to show the projects more continuously, because they sometimes happen over the span of months between all the other projects going on simultaneously.
