CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The new Thundering Herd beat Xavier with a dramatic touchdown.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A true story of tragedy, hope, and resilience comes to the screen in this sports drama. Huntington, WV, is home to Marshall University, a school where college football is a way of life. Huntington is also a town that learned to deal with tragedy in the fall of 1970 when Marshall's "Thundering Herd" boarded an airliner to return home after a football game in North Carolina. The jet crashed into a hill due to bad weather, and 75 members of Marshall's football squad and athletic staff died that night. The accident dealt a crippling blow to the city of Huntington, as well as Marshall's faculty and student body, and university president Donald Dedmon (David Strathairn) considered abandoning the school's football program. But instead Coach Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey) was recruited from Ohio's College of Wooster to rebuild Marshall's football program. Lengyel was not naïve about the task ahead of him, and working beside Red Dawson (Matthew Fox), an assistant coach who narrowly missed the doomed flight and was one of the program's only survivors, he came to understand his job was not just to put a team on the field, but help a college and a community heal their wounds from the tragic accident. Together Lengyel and Dawson turned a handful of rookies and second-string players into a competitive team who in 1971 showed the world what they could do in a legendary game against Marshall's rivals, Xavier University. Produced with the cooperation of Marshall University and filmed in part on their campus, We Are Marshall also stars Ian McShane, Anthony Mackie, and January Jones.

It's weird how there were many critics that didnt like this movie, i thought it was a great movie. i just dont understand critics anymore

Some people never played football or any sports won't know what a team means. You have to be in it at least once to feel the emotional after the win. I won't judge if this movie is good, but it's truly an impressive story.
@carterfranklin2320

Critics tend to be very simple. If its a football movie, they want to watch football, not what goes into it. If they want a war movie, they want to see shooting. We saw it with The Hurt Locker and Jarhead. Critics are bone headed and one dimensional. Critics are useless.
@hawkeyfan1
@hawkeyfan1 3 года назад
The whole critic “industry” should be thrown in a dumpster and set on fire. One dimensional, boring people. I have never listened to a single critic nor do I even look up what they say. That goes for movies, restaurants, etc. I listen to my friends and family 100%

My Dad was playing smaller college ball all the way out in Davis, California when the tragedy struck, he rememebered reading about it, and immediately going to church to pray on all the lost lives, the affected families and friends, a community shattered....all of college football mourned...it was unthinkable, what Marshall went through to bring their program back...what a huge measure of resilience. Then again, we're talking about folks in the State of West Virginia...tough breed.

I am a die hard Marshall fan, even though I live in Duck territory (Eugene, Oregon) My Dd was a DJ for WGNT when we lived there. I miss it so much. This movie never fails to make me cry. My grandfather worked at a funeral home (don't remember which one) and he took care of the 6 players that couldn't be identified due to the severity of the crash.

I was barely alive when tragedy struck Marshall. It wasn’t until many decades later I learned of it. There are many pictures in our family photo album from that day. I was tearing up a birthday cake with a “1” on it. While my family was celebrating that day, many families in the Marshall community were suffering a great tragedy. It always gets me in the “feels” that my first birthday and the Marshall plane crash are linked because they both occurred on the same day.

WSAZ TV in Huntington would broadcast the Marshall games on a tape delay basis on the following Sunday afternoon. I remember watching this game. The winning touchdown did in fact come on the last play from scrimmage but it was a simple screen pass that the receiver ran in for the score. They took some liberties with the play in the movie as you can see.

@Bork19
@Bork19 Год назад
As great a film this is things like this bug me. I guarantee they had football experts on set making sure everything makes sense so when you call “bootleg screen” it has to be a pass behind the line of scrimmage, the qb rolls out in 1 direction opposite of the play fake and probably throw it back to the other side of the field where the wr/back are with some lineman so he can run it in. If they want to throw it into the end zone call a play that could possibly make sense, if they want to make it easy for the audience to understand include “post” or “flag” or “drag” or all 3. Sorry, these things taint football movies for me.
@thehaughtcorner

How about the fact that as this play was filmed, the penetration/rush blew up a chance for the screen? And in reality, the screen DID work as planned? Yes, they Hollywoodized the ending, but the actual call WAS a screen.
