I don't think it ever happened but I would have loved to witness a conversation between Rivers and Rowan Atkinson. So very different as people but they both absolutely knew comedy.

I was not sure if Eric was going to follow that line with "Always look on the bright side of death" ...
Plus, when Spike Milligan (during a tribute to Spike) called Charles (who had sent a tribute letter) a "Groveling Little B*stard". Charles reportedly fell out of his chair laughing. Next day Spike sent a telegram to Charles saying "I suppose a Knighthood is out of the question?" Charles responded "Keep Groveling" (Spike later got an honorary KBE since he was an Irish citizen)
Here I am in 2024 and this is the first time that I have seen this video. Monty Python ... A team who had no boundaries! Whoever it may be : the Royal Family or Jesus Christ . Did the guy in the white ballet frock really say in front of the then Prince of Wales : something about him being 60 and his mother won't leave the stage? Oh, I say... If I was a judge on BGT that would have been more than just 4 yeses! Gold.

I can't believe I just saw ballerinas, cabaret dancers, a choir, a 4 man band, another band, a bunch of comedians and Eric Idle dressed as a ballerina in front of all that singing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life". Then again, I don't have to believe it.
Having seen these guys in full force, nothing surprises me. Or disappoints. And anyone who can dream up this song as he hangs on a cross during the crucifixion...
Ballet dancers, normal dancers, Marching Band, back up singers and an opera singer and it all just seems normal. This is just a song that you can't go overboard on. THIS IS BRITAIN!
I will tell you a secret. 2:38 - That moment is exactly why I love the British. You recognised the song straight away after just a few notes. And all of it is marvelous. Be proud.
Eric Idle still has and will always have "It" :D I feel sad because i know that in my lifetime i will have to watch all of the Pythons succumb to the nature of old age. True legends, all of them. The Kings of British Classical Comedy.

What a show! My little brother is one of the front row buglers in dark green! He did brilliant! You can see him just just to the right of Eric Idle when they're stood still! Really proud of him!
I love how absolutely bonkers this finale is. Only the British could come up with how to finish a show like this: Eric Idle, Swan Lake Ballerinas, A group of guys in Hawaiian shirts and boas playing instruments, Chorus Line Girls, Men’s chorus, Marching band, A woman dressed up as a Valkyrie, Royal British Guards, on top of Everyone who already performed come out for a final bow and sing along. This shouldn’t work together at all, but it all comes together brilliantly!
Ok it’s old. But by god was it enjoyable. Did you notice the ballerina cracking up at the end. Fabulous. & the audience & every Australian knows the words. Good on you Eric. A very clever man.

This is BRITAIN!!!! I'm British and I am because of stuff like this - Hilarious comedy celebrating our Monarchy. Monty Python forever!!! I could quote them forever. In fact the best ending to this would of been if Prince Charles would have gone - "I didn't want to be a King, I wanted to be a lumberjack!!!"
Well that is the entire comic poignancy of the song after all: not that long from now everyone else on stage will have died too. You must always face the curtain with a bow!
Isn't it telling that EVERYONE, the audience and even the Royal Family, is clapping and singing along to this song? Everyone knows it, and everyone loves it... If life had a theme song, it'd be THIS!
Some time ago I watched an interview with Eric Idle, he said it used to be that the song always sung at British funerals used to be I Did It My Way, but now it's Always Look on the Brights Side of Life. He seemed both proud snd surprised.
I love that too, I remember particularly enjoying that moment when I saw it on the night it was broadcast as it looks as though Eric got a kick out of singing the real word, as most of the time he substitutes 'spit' for it but was actually allowed to say the real word this time and in the presence of royalty too!

also ex-pat from late 60s. Never followed Monte Python in its heyday, so when I saw Eric Idle at the Olympics I was captivated by "Always look on the bright side..". I checked out vids after the show and found the Albert Hall rendition which took we waaaay back to my youth in GB. I felt sooooo British! Honestly, I don't know where I belong now. U.S. and UK both have good and bad, but I have such wonderful memories of Marlow, Bucks. I realize how fortunate I was.
John Cleese and Eric Idle (no intention of diminishing all the other great comedians)... part of my and many's favourite comic group ever. Having the strength and determination to walk up on stage at such an age and make comedy like 30 years ago (if i'm not mistaken) deffinetly deserves my and all of our respect. Sirs, i salute you!
Joan Rivers is a personal friend of The Prince of Wales; she visits the family every summer, and according to CNN was also invited to their wedding in 2005
To those who gave this a thumbs down... This after all a comedy show and obviously you didn't stay for what is after the 2 minute ballet which is not only hilarious, but possibly the best part of the show. so if you're not into ballet, click here > 2:07 and laugh your head off.
For the last two years, every country should broadcast this video and everyone should sing along, it would really help with the covid, it would be so good for everyone.
The most unexpected bit was seeing that whole ensemble, complete with Eric Idle dressed up as a ballerina, on stage with the future king of England. Nothing remotely like that would happen in most countries of the world. That must have been a superb evening of entertainment.
