This is what the surface of the road looks like that we are referring to (transverse tining): www.flickr.com/photos/treeclimbermamba205/6218103000

Now you legally have to disclose it to sale your property. We owned a business that backed up to a similar road and it gets on your nerves. At least I didn't have to sleep there. Hope you find your dream match. Just discovered your channel
@diyfferent

kbbels, Doesn't have to be disclosed. It was never disclosed to us and we didn't have to disclose it to buyers. The noise is very obvious and loud 24/7. Things like airports and train tracks are different and may need to be disclosed since there are breaks between airplanes and trains going through.

I totally understand this. I hate traffic noise and pretty much any noise that isn't nature. I seem to find property after property that is beautiful with the perfect house....backing up to a busy road or highway or freeway. Not being near traffic is one of the top three things on my list.

Wow! That is a bombshell! I do understand about the noise. In one of your videos, I was telling my husband, I don't know how you guys can stand that noise. When we were looking for our house, the #1 deal breaker was ANY major roads nearby. Even within the neighbor we wanted to be near a dead end, no outlet whatsoever. Life is too short to be miserable in your own home. Everyone's home should be a place of safety, happiness, joy, peace and quiet. I support your decision to move to find that and look forward to joining both of you on that journey.

Since you moved to that property I always wondered how you could stand that constant noise. It would drive me crazy too. I know this had to be a very tough decision. Sorry to hear. Just in case the selling does not go as well as hoped: 1. find out about the maintenance/resurfacing schedule and what type of surface for the road, 2. sound noise is relative, consider placing fountain/waterfall features near the places were you spend most of your time, 3. if possible, sleep in the rooms with minimal sound, use curtains, keep windows closed and use sound dampening ventilation instead, 4. if the burn piles are still avail, dig a trench along the road and put the tree waste in the trench and cover up with soil and if wood chips are avail use all the truck loads you can get to raise that sound barrier as high as possible and plant clumping high growing bamboo on top (hugelkultur is the keyword), 5. if wood chips are avail apply them near the road, rough surfaces have a sound dampening effect, you can even try Back to Eden gardening there, 6. you and others here can come up with other solutions. Our previous home had military choppers flying over, the base relocated and we had less noise, but our new home is not far from the new base, the number of choppers trippled, so check for new road plans at your new location. Best wishes, greetings from Holland.

Good for you that you are not "making do" and being miserable. Many peeps are noise sensitive and have to resort to different strategies in order to cope day to day. I'm so happy you are able to remove the cause of discomfort by moving. Onward....I'm excited to see where it leads you guys to next.

I feel your pain... fell in love with a rental property not far from downtown Pittsburgh, PA. Four acres of yard and gardens surrounded by woods with a waterfall in the backyard. House was built in the 1870's with stone walls and hickory beams. The place was enchanting except for the crazy busy road that ran right by the property. Constant noise that only died down at night, late, a little. I too looked at the place in winter and thought I'd get used to it. 6 years later I still hadn't gotten even somewhat used to the constant whizzing of vehicles...moved. I took with me some beautiful photos and great memories. Still looking for my lil' place in the country. New to your channel...love it!

Yea, it's too bad road noise ruins what could be amazing properties. Some people don't mind it and say "Oh, you get used to it", but not us! I hope you find your nice country place soon. Thanks for watching our videos :)

I understand. I lived across the road from a train yard for about 20 years, and it became intolerable. I now am living on 4.5 acres in the country that are absolutely silent except for a distant cow or rooster, birds, and insects. The quiet is so good for the soul. Good luck finding just the right property!

Totally understand how noise affects you Ashley, I am the same way. One of the reasons we moved was the constant noise, and moving to a quieter place definitely has increased our happiness and peace. Unfortunately, we still deal with some nuisance noises such as noisy kids down the road who scream whenever they are outside, and the tractors/landscaping equipment motors that are just part of living in the country, but for the most part the only sounds are birds chirping and leaves rustling in the wind, what a blessing it's been. Great that you are honoring yourselves, and made a decision to do what is best for you! Good points to look for someplace private, w/ as few neighbors as possible, and also, it would be good to look for the largest piece of land you can afford, so that you have the biggest buffer to neighboring noise sources. It isn't crazy at all, best of luck in your search for your perfect quiet place :).

You guys are my *very most favorite* YT channel. It is such a joy seeing you working together and enjoying each other and honoring GOD and His Creation. You are an amazing duo ~ "A.D." You have made so many great improvements on this property and in the process have learned new skills which will go with you everywhere. You have enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing great results from your hard work. You've learned more about the features and creatures on this Earth which will serve you well. You have learned you are stronger than you realized and GOD has imparted much wisdom on you. This property will sell for much more than the money you have put into it. This has been an *investment* and will fund your next homestead which you will improve. Thank you for taking us along. I look forward to seeing how GOD blesses you and what the *Amazing Duo* does next.

We lived at our beautiful home for 16 years...& I just got use to it ~ Well, we moved! We have been at our new place for almost 5 years now...it's so quiet here ~ I Love it!! I never truly realized how Noisy it was at our old home until we moved here ~ I no longer have the constant headaches ~ I'm not as stressed out as I was ~ I no longer wake up with my teeth clenched! You can ALWAYS get use to something...but it doesn't mean it's good for you ~ You both sharpened your teeth on this property & gained valuable experience there ~ I'm excited for your New Adventure!! It's good that you both respect each other so ~ It's so good to see! I think the both of yuns are just Fantastic!! ❤❤❤👍

I appraise homes in an upscale golf community next to a major highway. they built a 20 + ft berm and planted shrubs all over it to help cancel out the noise. It still sounds like you're going to get run over by a semi truck when your outside and you can still hear it in the house. Follow your hearts. You're young and ambitious, don't settle for anything that you're not happy with. That's all I got to say about that!

New Subscriber! I DO UNDERSTAND what you are saying. We moved to De 2 yrs ago because our last home was 3 blocks away from a near by highway which had asphalt and it was HORRIBLY LOUD. It seemed to get louder every year we were living there. So I do understand...if you are not happy... then NOW (while you are still young), is the time to find your forever home. Best thing to do for the next home is to visit it different times of the day just to make sure that is the home you want. We did that with our new home....and we are so happy HERE in De. We praying for you all in this journey for your FOREVER HOME! God Bless!

That school house would have been a big job. This is the sort of old Victorian houses we work on in london UK. Only they are much bigger often five stories. Many require, new roof, all the old lime plaster and lats, wooden wall frames, doors and windows have to be removed, leaving only props to support the roof. The lats have to be picked up first because you can't shovel the old plaster into a bag until the lats are removed. Bags are carried down on your shoulders and emptied into a skip. The amount of dust that is accumulated in a 200 year old house is incredible. The walls often need underpinning and the whole foundation of about an 8th of an acre have to be dug out by hand about four feet down and then filled with concrete. Then the four side walls on the inside are replastered with sand and cement. This is mixed up on the street and carried by bucket and hod, starting at the top floor. No lift so everythin must be carried up. The walls are plastered with a coat of finish plaster. New wooden wall frames are put up, then they are covered with plasterboard and plastered too. Then new plumming and wiring are put in. New windows and doors are fitted. New joists and floorboards are used to replace old ones if need be. This is before the old staircase is replaced and the whole inside of the building painted and decorated. Then you have to work on the outside of it. LOL.

Native Hoosier here (West Lafayette - fairly close to Kokomo), now in South Carolina... There's a reason the state motto is the 'Crossroads of America.' Northern Indiana is an absolute checkerboard of criss-crossed roads, as you've certainly found out. I went to school down south in Bloomington and I'd definitely recommend the southern part of the state for more of a homestead-y, country feel. I'll be watching and looking forward to the search!

I understand, I too am noise sensitive and would not want to live with that day and night either. The one thing that I admire about the two of you is, you will be leaving this awesome property better than you found it and it will find the owners that it is meant to have. To bad the community couldn't come together and petition the county or whomever to re-pave the road. I will continue to enjoy your journey where ever it may take you.

Another step towards a better life. I have to use a sound machine with white noise, but that only help inside, not out. Hi Doug & Ashley I'm a new viewer and have been admiring your journey to improve your life & living conditions; starting from nothing. So many of us out here are on the same journey, myself included. I completely respect your decision to "just move" b/c I too am having a very similar experience and have lived previously, right next to a major freeway with sound (& light, actually) sensitivities. It's about audible & visual/optic stress, for people with sensitivities of this nature, and it builds up. Cumulatively, it gets to be too much. I dealt with it for six years before breaking and moving on. And you are SO RIGHT about "you never know what you're going to get with each property." This is something that new home buyers really should consider (& few people think about), when purchasing (or even just moving into a rental) a new home. RESALE VALUE is important. One's ability to move on if it's not working for them, is important. But here's what I wanted to share in my experience. I very recently just moved into my first home purchase. I too got a "great deal" on a home that I find absolutely beautiful and I really love this house. The neighborhood is "good" and it sits on a golf course (a lower end golf course. it's not as glamorous as it sounds. that too! has been quite the learning experience). AFTER purchasing and moving in (which is a very stressful experience in & of itself), I realized that the street right out front of my house is extremely busy and people often don't abide by the 25mph speed limit. So, I can't really feel safe even walking my dog on it. Even during the daytime. Then.....not even a week in, I had the very unpleasant experience of the random stranger (always men) coming into my backyard to retrieve their golf ball (something I DID NOT expect to happen being that it IS private property and a national PGA RULE called "out of bounds;" which is self explanatory to any human being with even an average brain & sense of common decency). This actually became a serious problem with men trespassing on a daily basis, at it's worst. And then.......as if that wasn't enough, the kicker was when I awoke at 5am one day to a noise that stood out from the still quiet of the night that allowed me to sleep (soundly) for the first time in 6 years. The noise penetrated the walls of my house & actually woke me up. I think sound amplifies at night, though I don't really have the scientific research to back that up, it's just been my personal experience. I woke up & opened my back door to find out what that sound was. It was the HIGHWAY; a two lane each direction with a large "foresty" medium between directions (so not a major 4 lane freeway, even) that my house sits approximately 1/2 mile from! I couldn't believe it! That I was THAT far away from a major thoroughfare and @ night, I could STILL hear the sounds of traffic & semi-trucks. It was most disappointing. So yeah, I get it. Moving to avoid the cumulative stress of audible noise is worth it! B/c stress takes a toll on our bodies as well as our minds, emotions & overall sense of well being. Good for you for not wasting anymore time thinking about it. And you have a great attitude about it being a stepping stone. Your video is HELPING ME understand how to process my own disappointing & bitter sweet experience of letting go of something I thought would be more permanent. So, thank you for sharing your experiences with us! To Doug: very smart man you are! Happy Wife, Happy Life! :-) That's an attitude that makes for a long successful marriage. ;-) Sorry for such a long comment. Blessings & well wishes to you both!

I totally get it! When I heard your heart felt explanation, I thought "of course, who could live with that?" Then I remembered all the stuff I've lived with for years. We have road noise and neighbor noise (late night drums, etc.) but worst is that on 2 sides a neighbor who runs heavy machinery right next to our fence. He (and his family) have threatened us on occasion which is so weird, as we are great neighbors. The first family member threatened our small children, and pushed equipment into our yard (only about a third acre) and ran a semi 12 feet from our bedroom window for years, starting at 3:00 am. We didn't complain because we were trying to be good neighbors. We built the fence after the kid threats. Anyway, we should have moved. We were held in place by our love of the big old house, the schoolhouse, and our commitments to the local DSS and school system for our special needs foster/adopt kids. We even bought land and had an option to move. So, now, at 60 years old we are still developing the farm and still in our old house. We still have some kid commitments, believe it or not. I so admire your bravery to embrace doing hard things for the benefit of your family. I love that you built the freedom to choose the family goal of peaceful surroundings. Noise and neighbors. I get it. I hope you get many messages of encouragement. I also hope you know that you are an encouragement to others! You should have t-shirts that say Do Hard Things. and, Seek Peace. and, It's Worth It. haha.

Yea, that's pretty bad dealing with neighbors being loud. We had that problem in our last home, we always seemed to get loud, arrogant tenants in the apartment next to us. I hope everything works out for you. haha, great T-shirt sayings, another good one would be Grow With The Flow :D

I totally understand why you’d move, the noise is really obvious even from watching the videos, but if I were you, I’d go ahead and list, because there’s a lot of Summer left and the Trailer and property is greatly improved, anything else you do to the trailer will go to waste, cause whoever that buys it will just move it, and probably put a new one in its place and just live there, I’d get going now and get it on the market and on to a more peaceful piece of property before Summer is completely gone. Good for you, can’t wait to see the new place and the exciting new beginnings.

Wow! Talk about drama! I really wondered whether you would ever get used to that highway. I can hear it in the background right from the beginning..

For me this is not a shocker at all. When you first introduced your place you guys mentioned and pointed towards the highway and I am sure most viewers as you mentioned heard it, as I certainly did. I have been hearing the highway in mostly all of your videos except when you guys are in your home. I too am noise sensitive so I hear all high pitched sounds and any annoying sounds, sounds others would not find annoying. I hear the bad breaks on the buses that go down the next street over from me, so I know where Ashley is coming from. In this video, I can hear the high pitched tire sounds on the highway! Go for it! Sounds like a great plan! When something like non stop horrible high pitched sounds disrupts your sleep, spirit, eventually it could impact your health and well being. So its best to move on💖🤗

Now see where your at, great choice. We left Indiana for 2 reasons really, the wind farms and the corn. I walk outside at night and all I see for miles in every directions is blinking red lights. The non stop whooshing sound when the wind is blowing will drive you nuts! Loving life in a Michigan forest. ;)

My favorite home that I lived was sold because of living close to an interstate hwy. It was next to a hill. All hours we could hear trucks using their Jake Brakes. In the end I had to move it just wasn't the noise but I could feel the pulsing sound. The next place was in the mountains!

Praying for a perfect property for you and your family!!!! I can understand the noise.. I can.. I really do... Altho it's not the same noise we have a neighbors dog that barks 24/7 and my fiance works 3rd shift.... And altho we can say something to the neighbor where as you guys can't say something to the highway 🤪 I understand... There's a perfect property out there for you somewhere... On a good note think of all the amazing things you've done to upgrade that property 🤗🤗🤗💕💕💕👍👍

I totally get this! We’ve lived here 22 yrs and this summer the cow pasture behind us has been leased as an oil field- first it was heavy equipment building a road- then it was the droning of the drilling- they have finally capped it or whatever they do,but I couldn’t sleep at night. I could hear the machine all night and it did steal my peace! So, yes! I get it. You do what you have to do for your family- make no excuses.

The only Zen you can find on the tops of mountains is the Zen you bring up there. - Robert M. Pirsig. There are acoustic fence panels or even acoustic material you can attach to a fence. There are sound blocking windows and curtains. Also you need to block the source of the sound from sight. Trees would have to have such dense foliage that you can't see the highway.
@diyfferent
@diyfferent 6 лет назад
Yep, trees need to be very dense and hundreds of feet for it to really matter. We hear the noise from so far away both directions that no matter what we did it would still be loud. Our neighbors at the end of the dead-end street own between us and the highway, and it's very open there.

Out in the Country in the meantime this device is meant to be stuck to a window and counteracts the vibrations to reduce noise, it is also an advanced white sound machine. www.celestialtribe.com/

I totally understand this and I am in that same situation right now. We have moved twice already because of noise. Where we are now is still hard on me because of noise, but we still cannot afford a property out in the quiet like where I grew up. Saving up for that day and trying to stay positive, but it affects me in such a negative way. I feel like there are not many people who feel this way because of noise. It is so hard on me mentally. Thanks for sharing this! :)

Rose Garcia ... Amen Rose. To those who are not sensitive to it can not understand. I know people who have had to move away from family home owned property because of the “Big Windmills”... there is a noise to them also. I wouldn’t be able to stand it for long. Ashley... no fault of yours! Glad you found out now and not after lots of renovations.... 👍❤️

Absolutely the best decision you could be making. We also experience this noise living between two expressways and one highway. Research shows that constant noise is detrimental to ones health. Looking forward to your journey finding your homestead. Thank you for the inspiring videos.
