We got together over the weekend to record this one, and as we were learning it, we couldn't help but flip out at the songwriting and harmonic changes. We kept looking at each other and saying "Fucking Freddie!!" We all know it's a great song, but learning the chords brings it into a whole new light. There are two (not one, but TWO) key changes in the verse, and the chorus modulates up a whole step -- and somehow, Freddie makes the whole thing feel effortless and and natural. We all just sing along. As if it makes total sense.... and all that complexity boils away leaving a fucking awesome pop song. Freddie, you are a historic songwriter! Your genius will be known for generations. Thanks for all you've given us.

Wow!! I wonder why I have always disliked this song because, in my mind, it sounds _too banal_. I am not a musician but I usually like chords and progressions that are unusual. It is amazing that this sounds to my uneducated ears simple and unoriginal in spite of being, as I understand now, quite the contrary. All in all, I still don't like the song, even in your arrangement - but now I have no idea why. Taste is a weird thing.

Perhaps the hardest thing about writing music that isn't just 4-5-6-1 is making anything outside of that sound natural. Good call on this being an unusual progression. Voice leading is where it's at.

As someone who is currently trying to learn how to play one or two instruments, sometimes I find myself getting mad over chords I can not manage to play or solos that do not sound as I expected. At those moments, music is to me nothing more than repetition, effort and a lot of hard work. But watching you guys, I remember that music is actually all about passion and fun. I agree. I don't know how Freddie came up with the chord progression (especially in the chorus). It's original/never been done before. He is a genius and one of my favorite songwriters since I was very young. I have a cover of this song (just me and a piano)... I tried my best to learn it by ear and would like to know what people think.

It just struck me -- for younger Boomers and Gen-Xrs, this song did for us what Sinatra's "I Did It My Way" did for my parents' generation. It's likely Freddie had that Sinatra in mind when he wrote this. Anyway, Sarah does an amazing job with voice and mic interaction and dynamic control -- forceful and understated at the same time, a feat.

To be honest, I don't find any of the chords in this song difficult / complicated. It's like with any other song; it's either catchy or not catchy, original or not. Obviously it's very original (not the typical G-C-D / C-Am-F-G), but it's not a difficult song to learn

What a fantastic version of this classic, great performance and vocals! Makes me seethe a little inside that the genius of Freddie’s songwriting isn’t more universally recognised - he’s light years ahead of the usual songwriting ‘greats’ who seem pedestrian, lumpen and uninspired in comparison. Maybe you’d like to tackle Bicycle Race next - ostensibly a throw away, superficial number, but under the catchy sing-a-long surface lurks surely the most technically complex 3 minute pop song of all time.
