It can be really frustrating when you are discussing your deconstruction and someone interrupts and says that you are just angry.
Why does this happen so much? Is there any truth to it? Is it helpful to the conversation?

@@sorryifoldcomment8596 strange as it sounds I actually don’t regret my time in my previous church, save for the times I was a bigoted jackass because I was told to barely tolerate gay people for example, as it was one of the things that made me who I am today, and I loved the sense of community and purpose and I had to seek that out after I left in things like Humanism because otherwise my deconversion journey would’ve been much more lonely than it was (especially when I don’t have the most favorable situation regarding this with family). I’d say that I was pissed off because it was all like a relationship where you were infatuated with that special someone only to find out they were cheating on you the entire time and since day one, I think most people would feel the way I felt after I left if they were in that situation as in both cases it’s about a relationship ultimately built on lies. At least I want to think it’s a bit harder for me to fall into BS arguments if somebody tried to convert me as I can see how the apologetics work now, maybe I’d be a bit more gullible if I wasn’t exposed to all of that (especially since I live in an area that is still relatively pretty religious, even if not as much and as oppressive as the Bible Belt region in the southern US or Saudi Arabia). It wasn't all the scandals or awful things that believers that made my faith fall apart but it was being lied that faith and science are perfectly compatible when it fact they're not (ironically after being told to always seek the truth and having scientist but religious parents, just try to apply the logic of Original Sin to human evolution to see where it's going).

enlightenment happens differently for different people. Yes, the indoctrination has a biased flaw big big flaw but once you wake, you still have to choose to understand as much as you can to determine where you stand. Blaming other people for your own ignorance helps no one but people who will weaponize the hate that comes with it. If you weren't free before, free yourself now. Atheism and the organized religion all have flaws. If its about our personal lives, we should stop waiting for people like this one here in the video and apologists to determine the truth, we need to read between the lines on both sides and decide.

@@theboombody a problem is that the bible has barely any if there is anything that goes along with what we know thanks to the scientific community. Oftentimes it goes directly against it, so people like me would say anyone that is Christian either knows nothing of science, or they've bent the bible to fit what we know and ignore what doesn't fit. For example Genesis is entirely wrong, the order that god creates the universe is off from what we know and have theorized, there was never a point where there was only two homosapiens were alive, and counting the genealogy given in Genesis leaves us with ~6000 years from creation to today. Even bumping that up with the first seven days of god time instead of human times it doesn't come close to the creation of the universe. How would you feel if you were told that Santa Clause is real for over 20 years and then only on your own, find out that Santa never existed in the first place? Pretty upset right? It's sort of the same thing when it comes to Christianity or any religion and find out it's not actually true. Granted there are some good things in the Bible that can be used as guidelines for how to live life. But that's all it is, guidelines or basically suggestions. I can find the same sort of suggestions in a fortune cookie or other religions as well. It's like the pirate code in POTC. Point is follow the guidelines or don't, it's honestly up to you.

For me, it was a slow realization of: "Wait, we're supposed to love everyone but this book has a supposedly loving God regularly commanding followers to commit genocide?" Along with all the ways the church either advocates or excuses abuse. And the fact that "Wait... So the religion's basically all about human sacrifice and the belief that saying the magic words gets you in a good place after you die even if you were a crummy person?" The thing that truly sealed it for me was learning of the existence of the apocrypha and that the "undisputed word of God" in fact had been disputed throughout history and we only have the current version because a lot of church leaders got together to argue it out. Even to this day there's a difference between bibles as some include Maccabees and some don't.

My mom has told me I'm "angry" and honestly I've come up with an analogy that partially explains why I am coming across as angry. Let's say you have a friend or relative that's in an abusive relationship. This abuser, let's call him God, checks all the marks of a really terrible person. He is abusive, physically, domestically, sexually, psychologically/emotionally, financially/materially, he's neglectful, he discriminates and enslaves group of people, and most importantly he uses your friends family and other friends to control them through organizational or institutional abuse. God executes these forms of abuse throughout time via a simple book, and oh wow he does it damn well. So this friend you know and love is being royally abused by this partner, and you decide that they absolutely need to get the hell out of this horrible relationship because you love them and you don't think they should have to be ashamed of being human. Now, this friend has been gaslighted and manipulated. They don't want to leave. "He loves me, it's my fault, I didn't trust him enough, I didn't obey enough, I didn't follow the rules, he is making me stronger, I just have to be patient, and then we will be happy together." and you have watched this partner ignore this friend, and threaten them with eternal damnation. In fact, when this friend's mom dies, he tells her it's her fault because they didn't worship him enough. So you go up to your friend, and you tell them this partner might not be the most healthy person to be around and that maybe they should try and get some distance because you see these signs of toxicity and you don't want them to end up hurt. And what does your friend say? That you just don't understand. They have a special connection. Then, everyone else tells you to leave it alone, that you are the one that's being harmful, and if she is happy the way she is, then it doesn't matter how much this partner is hurting her. I can't imagine not feeling a little, oh what's the word... angry, for being dismissed and ignored when we all know if someone was being abused by a real person, we would want to protect them and give them love and support. So yeah, call me an angry Atheist, and I will call you an abuse sympathizer because if there is a God, he's one shitty deity.

Especially as a woman, I'm tired of being told my anger isn't valid. Anger is the emotion of self-protection: it lets you know when you're being mistreated. When your boundaries are being violated. Anger is very often dismissed as always shameful and always bad, instead of one of your tools to fucking assert yourself as a being with rights and dignity. I also like to point out to Christians that God is angry, a LOT, and that anger is righteous. (Another example of "when God does it it's great, when you do it it's a sin.") But pointing out that Christianity has been hemorrhaging numbers, losing about 2/3rds of its numbers in twenty years, tends to be the end of any conversation. I think it's a form of gaslighting for Christianity to dismiss any and all anger, because it prepares them for how to dismiss those abused within their ranks. If there's one thing Christians sputter trying to defend, it's the reality that their churches have the most amoutn of child rape than any one pedophile or Q Anon conspiracy.

@ThornWolf1
@ThornWolf1 3 года назад
I gave up my faith because I was angry. Well, more accurately, I was supremely enraged by my Catholic school councilors and teachers and that started me on the path to doing my own research. Both of my parents had severe heart problems at the same time while I was in high school. Teenage years are stressful enough as it is, and that obviously gets compounded when you're terrified one or both of your parents might die without warning. So after struggling to not have meltdown after meltdown during mandatory mass at this school or in classes that went out of their way to frame just how great God was, I went to talk to my school councilor. I needed to vent, or find some coping mechanisms, or maybe even get referred to a professional councilor who could help me get through it all. Instead, the Catholic school councilor had the audacity to suggest someone in my family was being punished by God for some wrong-doing, be it my parents, their siblings, or even me. I like to think I'm a pretty openminded person, but I had to walk out on that session because if I didn't, I was going to put my fist through the wall. The idea of a just and loving God using severe illness to punish someone was horrid to me. Why would I want to worship someone like that? So I started reading book after theological book, looking at the history of religions around the world and how each worked and compared to each other. I ended up becoming agnostic. I'm not full-on atheist because I still feel like there's greater elements at play that we just don't know/understand yet, but I'm pretty sure there isn't a childish, vindictive God at the center of it all.

Y'know I'm just here wondering why you believed that person. You needed someone to get you through and that's it. Why blame the ignorance of that man on God? Living, breathing, going through the problems of life and then finally dying. That's just too basic if you ask me. Take a second and think about it. What would you do if you didn't exist? If you see this as a dumb question then congrats you earned an achievement. Now move on to the question, "What does it mean to exist on a personal level?" Idk who you are or why troubles you've faced but I think you just need someone to explain what it means to be a 'genuine follower of christ.' or better still come to that conclusion yourself and not take wrong things about Christianity as the wrong things about God.

@@mrlollip0p You're being very disrespectful. This person gave up their faith, and you're basically saying "if god isn't real we have no purpose." We don't need a purpose. We get to make our own purposes. There is no evidence for your god (arguments do not count as evidence) so of course people will take your religion as a reflection of your religion.
@mrlollip0p
@mrlollip0p 3 года назад
@@goatdeer8403 I won't argue about the existence of God. Why we have no meaningful purpose is because "science" is simplifying your existence by saying "Humans are animals" or "We are a product of evolution". Imagine your parents giving birth to you, teaches you how to make farm and make certain tools to help cultivation and weapons to be used against animals. You eat, play/talk with friends, learn and sleep on a daily basis. And just like that you've grown up. Maybe you change certain ppl for the better. You go on a journey to another land when you come of age, then find a life companion and the cycle goes on exactly that way. You would agree with me that your life typically didn't mean much to the world regardless of the minor ways you contributed and changed it(slightly), because one way or another if you didn't exist there are typically other human beings. No matter what, if we continue such a cycle humans will NEVER be extinct. So why the need to go around, conquer people, conquer land and have slaves? Why do you want the extravagant when the needful is enough? If humans are what science depicts us as, we should follow such a cycle and not rule over the world. Imagine lions having their characteristics and being as smart and self aware as humans. But although you do not follow such a cycle you still follow a very similar one as of right now. Eat, play, learn, sleep, grow up, work for your daily bread, change a few ppl for the better (eg. Being there when they needed you the most), find a life companion and finally die. We didn't change how our time on earth works so why didn't we just stick to when it was simpler and easier? What is your worth? How much of this world have you changed? If you(on a personal level) didn't exist wouldn't there be another person to fill your role? If science is right then I can kill two ppl and father two children. Nothing changes. People will mourn the two people's death but on a universal basis it's very ok to just replace them. I don't know you so what has your life done for me? Nothing. I would very much still be alive if you didn't exist. If you don't exist then someone else will. Maybe another sperm cell replaced you and you were flushed down the toilet. You were 'chosen' to be on earth. If you say God doesn't exist then you're taking for granted the fact that you won the sperm race and you weren't killed as a helpless baby. Don't get me wrong, believing in God isn't a way to prove my self-worth( if that be the case then it's on a psychological level). Believing on God means that even if we continue this cycle of life everyone will agree was torture at a certain point of their life, there is a meaning to all of the limited happiness, the sadness, the suffering and all the pain. I didn't mean to disrespect anyone, I'm sorry if I did. Religion isn't good. Take Africa for example: they were given the Bible and were sold. They thought the suffering they faced was justified, while it was a way for greedy people to capture their minds and make them obey. Are you saying that the devout Christians around the globe that care for the poor and needy or go to muslim hotbeds where ppl are killed for being christian to spread the word are part of such greedy fellows? Not everyone in a religion is religious. Please don't disrespect or take for granted people that sacrifice their lives for the world to become a better place. If you look from outside the box you'll see that everything that brings "pleasure" and "happiness" on earth is mostly vain. Having many women, many riches, power, authority. They're all vain. God is real my good friend. And he sent his son to die for us so we may receive eternal life and true happiness. A happiness that doesn't neglect another person of theirs. Jesus loves you. (If you made it here, sorry for the long essay🙏)

@@mrlollip0p I have given you the benefit of the doubt and read all of it. It's mostly drivel and word salat. Sorry to hear that you need to believe in stuff you can't demonstrate to exist because reality isn't exciting enough or too pointless for you. "God is real my good friend." is just an assertion. The reasons you have given here are essentially "because I feel more fulfilled with that belief". I could go through every single bias and non sequitor you just made in this rant if you want, because there are a lot. PS: Science does not say that living in a cycle is how we should live. Evolutionarily, species which can find new habitats are more likely to survive, as are individuals which conserve riches such as food, so scientifically speaking there is a really good reason why historically speaking an expansionist mindset was/is advantagous. Honestly all you have made me convinced of even more once again is that a bad understanding of science goes hand in hand with religiosity.

@@mrlollip0p this is one of the reasons people like me generally dislike Christianity (or in my case organized religion) and those who are fanatical about it (and yes, long speeches on FB trying to argue God to people who have told you the abuses suffered under your religion is fanatical). The fact your first response is to defend God and blame people for following the teachings they were given (there's a lot of hateful shit in those books) proves the point of a lot of us who have come to hate the religion as a whole. I'm disappointed in "Santa," because saint veneration is cooler than the tradition gives him credit for. The 'tooth fairy' was always known to be my parents, and it's cute. I'm sure the fair folk don't mind. ...who's Vishnu? ...ah, _Vampires_ tho... symbolic folklore representation of immoral and sickly Eastern European aristocracy. These guys are a metaphor for the _real-world_ bad guys and don't "sparkle in the sun" like the Mormon romance novelist chose to (unhelpfully) apply to their folkloric tradition. Stop it. Get some help. *Odin* is probably one of the few I would venerate if I went Pagan. Him & Thor give _actual_ "sons of thunder" vibes and I relate to that through my roots and ancestry. :) ...Plus, Chris Hemsworth. Just makes me happy, is all... _The Boy Who Lived_ did nothing wrong, and I forgive Rowling for now being out-of-touch, (more readily than _Meyer,_ at least...) ...and as for Ha'Shem, let Him speak for Himself, however that sounds to all y'all. The 'Y' names are considered sacred to yours truly, but the 'J' ones...? Aren't. ...go nuts, Gentlemen.

It never ceases to amaze me, the utter hubris of Christians; particularly, how confident they are in their ability to read minds, to see with perfect clarity "what's in your heart", and then condescendingly explain to you what EXACTLY is going on in your head. This is what happens when someone literally believes they have been blessed by an all-powerful deity, and given the power of divine insight. Insight which (to them) means that they will *always* know better than you: - who you are - what your purpose is - what your gender is - what emotions you are feeling at any given moment - what the "real" reasons are, for your behavior - where you're going after you die. There's a part of me that envies their unshakeable confidence, and their ability to apply that confidence to essentially any aspect of their (or anyone else's) life. But I grew up among them, and I am aware of what harm can be done, when a person trades reason and humility for delusional confidence.

I've never understood religion. My closest religious relative was my Grandma who I'd visit for one or two weeks a year, which resulted in being forced to go to church one or twice a year and getting some christian coloring books. The stories seemed no different from any other fairy tale; sermons may as well be about the itsy bitsy spider. My opinion was basically: "I don't get it, I don't need to get it but you do you." Then I moved to Iowa and hit the bible belt hard. Suddenly, I'm required to engage these people in religious debate, and I just don't know how to respond to the absurd questions these Christians will posit. I learned to just avoid the questions by giving vague answers and deflecting the question back on them. The absurdity only grew deeper when they would reveal their own religiousness meant an implicit compromise with their parents that they would go to church and play gameboy for the duration.

Two of those are, like this one, Canadian, which might have something to do with it. The fundamentalist churches that are so politically powerful in the U.S. are insignificant in Canada, where the mainstream of Christians are not aggressive or unreasonable. The culture also has a strong streak of individualism, where people do not put up with others poking their noses into their business or preaching at them. I would also recommend the British videos of Qualia Soup and Theramin Trees.

I was far more connected to spirituality. I wasnt angry, I just felt spirituality made more sense to me. My grandparents told me I was mentally ill because I wasn’t christian.
