When you grow up religious or with any supernatural worldview there can be immense pressure to discover your purpose or God’s plan for your life.
What if that’s not the most important thing? What if it’s ok not to be the chosen one?

When I was a baby my Mom's friends thought I was a "Testimony from God". Because " God allowed me to live" when I was born 5 months early. All my life they placed this role on me to be a Christian Girl. Now that I'm an atheist they told me "Atheism is a cult/wrong and any other religions that aren't centered around God are cults". They told me they won't respect my disbelief in God & that everyone in the LGBTQA+ community is gay and transgender men and women want to dress up as the opposite gender. Now that I learned how long they been doing that it pissed me off because I've met many other kids who are premature does that also mean God has some dumb magical plan for us? Because mist premature kids such as myself suffer a lot.😤 Even tho they are Christians they are Transphobic,Homophobic, and won't accept any other non-God religions or beliefs :(

@Immanuel Ntim-Addae leaving the church or family isn't leaving God. God is universal and can be found every where. You can have faith in yourself, friends and family of your choosing. You can even have faith in God/the Universe and remain skeptical of things. These things are not dependent on your fear, loyalty or guilt. You don't have to fight to win arguments, because there is no reason to argue. The church/family uses God to be the big scary dad, coming home. Its about control and keeping you in line. Simply because it was done to them. They are feeling the same guilt and fear you do... Yet don't have the strength you do to separate or question. They dig in deeper out of fear. Sometimes just living your life. Doing whats right, for you and those you choose, is the closest to God you can get.

I don't share this often, but one of the most vivid memories of my childhood was in a hyper charismatic worship service when I was 14. There was a lady there in her mid 20's who singled me out from the crowd, and asked if she could prophesy over me. She put her hand on my shoulder and started shaking and saying, "Woah! Woahhh! God has such a huge plan for your life, man! It's like, it's like you're the chosen one, man! It's like... It's like you're Anakin Skywalker, man!" She had clearly not finished watching the Star Wars prequels to know little Ani became Darth Vader. But it didn't matter what she knew or didn't know. She was speaking the words of the Lord. I spent the next ten years of my life thinking I was destined to be a nefarious villain-that God had specifically set me aside to fall from grace, become a despotic traitor, and hurt those around me. One hell of a childhood, man.

@@dansattah Possibly. It also helps to remember how deeply intwined Christianity is with our government (despite our insistence on separation of church and state); "God" is still on our currency, our daily pledge allegiance to our flag "of the United States of America. And to the republic, to which we stand, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" (daily recitals of that for 12/13 years does this to you lmao), we haven't had an atheist president yet, GOP politicians in particular would not last in any election if they follow a different faith than Christianity or lack it, and our oaths are still made with hands placed on Bibles. I dunno much about the religious makeup of Germany but I imagine it's not this fundamentally evangelical. A lot of Atheists here are first-gen Atheists (if that's a term) due to a lot of what's mentioned above, so it's kinda inevitable that we're late in this regard. A lot of the community are people trekking into this blindly and without knowing older people with answers to our questions, so that's why there's that vibe of YT atheists approaching this as though it hasn't really been done before-- because it hasn't for many Americans. @@lotsofuwuenergy3983 That does make sense. One key element in Germany's and overall European history was an earlier detachment b/w religion and politics. E.g. Otto von Bismarck, the most important politician in the first unification of Germany, introduced policies that ultimately replaced the welfare of the church with state-owned welfare institutions. Religion turned from a political issue into a private opinion for most of the German populace. Even nowadays, most German Christians don't insist on the expansion of Christianity and live out their beliefs in private. Exactly. This gets into the idea of “pre destiny” that you can’t escape. Philosophy discussions about it ensue and last for days 🤪 Even as a kid, that made no sense to me. I’d wondered for years about how if my life is planned out but still have free will that God gave me...how does that work? If I choose something else, what happens? God comes up with another plan? Or here’s one that I also thought about as a kid which would likely worry most adults...the idea that God chooses when to “take us home”. Ok...if we have a preordained death date, but one chooses to commit suicide, it’s like saying that was God’s plan...but the very same people who tout that idea in the first place will absolutely do a 180 and say otherwise in that scenario.

im genuinely glad i found this channel. i grew up in a religion that was very love based, the church pastor was gay, it was a very progressive episcopalian space, it was faith based, not just organized religion and rules. at around age seven, when i already knew i was attracted to both women and men (i didnt have a label yet, i just kinda knew), we went to the church that my father and his family grew up in. they constantly told us that we didnt deserve love, the youth group there did abstinence practices and romanticised purity culture. it wasnt "jesus loves you and wants whats best for you, but he gave you the gift of free will so use it wisely" anymore. it was "jesus loves you but you will never deserve that love and this and that and also this will make him want to burn you in hell so fear him". i began to stray from religion, and i now consider myself to be an atheist. its genuinely sad looking back how i loved my faith so much as a little kid, until it was tainted by the church.

An ex boyfriend of mine was an evangelical,Christian and your Storm story reminded me of one of my own. I worked at a dairy farm and a huge storm came through, 70 mph winds, power went out at the dairy, we had to brave the storm to get the generator going to finish milking. Lots of damage at the farm. Arrived home to find out boyfriend’s one sister had a tree fall on her house, another sister had her truck heavily damaged by hail and his mother had a tree fall across her driveway. Yet at my house, only a few branches were in the yard. Evangelical boyfriend said something about God sparing us. I snarkily replied, “Yes, thank you, God for sparing the home of my heathen girlfriend and damaging the homes of my Christian friends and family.” He got quiet and eventually said, “Well, when you put it that way ... “ He just trailed off, never finished the thought.

Unfortunatly as someone who did study theology he is wrong. Unfortunatly for me almost anything can be unbiblical or biblical if you spin it the right way. The Bible is a disjointed work written by a large amount of people with completely different views in the subject matter, some view god as wrathful and others as kind. Because if the Bible’s flaws both are correct at the same time even when it would otherwise be impossible. The Bible is rife with mixed messages, poor fact checking, a huge amount of repetition, a massive amount of useless tangents, and passages that are so poorly written it is impossible for any consensus to be reach and what the hell they actually mean. Of course, this is why the Bible is such a strong religious text as well. Mixed messaging is awful until you realize that everyone can find a piece and latch onto it. Fundamentally it is poorly written, but it is so poorly written it is good for Christians. I would actually say that half the Bible should be covered in red ink because of how shit it is. You would think God will provide the people writting his sacred text with the ability to actually write well but he didn’t, probably because all evidence suggests that if he does exist he is probably running on a fridge temperature IQ.

One day they handed us each an acorn and said "okay, now when you plant this, say something that you're thankful God has given you." ...I said "diplomacy."

I love these videos. I grew up a evangelical Christian and I left the faith some years ago, it wasn’t easy, but watching these videos has reminded me that I’m not alone. That there are a lot of us out there navigating our way through life and away from the things that were drilled into our minds. Keep on making these videos! You are making a difference.

My Bible teacher always stressed the fact that not everyone is blatantly chosen for something, and that for a lot of us we'd probably do something small that would snowball into something important in the future without knowing. Some of us wouldn't do anything at all though, since the act of living is good in itself. We weren't supposed to look for something, only take the opportunities as they came. Dunno if I've done anything important yet, highly doubt it honestly; but I've got a lot of life left, and I plan on living forever out of spite so we'll see what happens.

I think this is so, so important. I am a Christian, but I absolutely love this channel because it really casts light on so much of the hypocrisy in the church today, and doesn't do so in a smug or ignorant manner. Keep doing what you do, because these are things that NEED to be said!

man it was such a relief when i was stepping away from religion and realizing that there isnt some "god's plan" script for my lifw that i was failing to recognize, and that it was totally okay for me to be uncertain about what i was "supposed" to do with my life because there isnt anything im supposed to do but be alive and make what i want out of my life

“Main character syndrome” is a big obstacle in pretty much any ideological worldview. So many people act like they are on some grand adventure and they are on a path. People who disagree are the enemy, everyone else is just an NPC who doesn’t matter. This isn’t just a religious issue, it’s an issue of human psychology

i remember going to a Young Life (some kinda christian thing for young people) camp thing in the mountains. it was aight. lot of god and preaching and worship and shit. but I'm a little disappointed in myself for raising my hand and saying I accepted god into my life or some shit. It felt more like I was pressured to do so ... ah well.

Unfortunately that's very common in church camps. The last day of camp was always the most emotional testimonial time and it almost ALWAYS resulted in many people crying

I’ve been an Evan…Chris…for 50 years and when I stopped going to ch_rch in March of 2020 due to the pandemic, I got the extensive critical distance I needed to evaluate my longtime ch_rch experiences. I used the time to think my own thoughts without all the brainwashing and social pressures and never ending manipulations. I am struck how much the relationships ecosystem and social/family/volunteer dynamics in evan…ch_rches is similar to the negative dynamics one experiences in narcissistic abuse situations. I feel a bit scared by my changes in thinking. I’m glad your channel came up in my RU-vid feed. You are talking about topics I’ve been working out and it’s a relief to hear your examples and points.

My mother is agnostic, my father atheist. They both had rural upbringings and I was raised among rural folks as well. So I've always felt like an outsider when it comes to religion. It took me most of my college years and still quite some time after that to begin to understand this conception of the world, and it's only fascinated me more since. So these sorts of details are exactly what I'm looking for - awesome video!

The whole notion that a being hand selects a chosen few as "His People" is hilarious, especially when said being evidently doesn't even care much about that group, either.

I subscribed because I like the intellectual talk you provide. I am non believer but that is not why I started listened. I am listening because I grew up super religious and was humiliated, critized, and homeless at 16. Religion brainwashed them and I refuse to be like that. Now I am married to my sexy husband with two cats and a chihuahua. I have a wonderful career and so does my man. I feel liberated while all the bigots I grew up with suffer.

I was raised Catholic but it only took me until age 7-8 to lose faith. I read a book of hymms and realized how much of it was ego stroking god and/or Jesus. I thought to myself, in simpler words, "there is no supreme being that could possible have that much riding on their own conceit".

I’m a boomer, wasn’t raised religious which was unusual back then. But it was really difficult growing up and even being an adult in a highly religious culture where everyone believed in gods/devils/spirits/souls/etc. I wish I had had access to your channel and other atheist material back then. Thanks for helping the next generations.

Been slowly leaving my faith in the LDS church, they programmed a lot of things into my head when I was young. I’ve been feeling I should start to look into evangelicals, and the lingering effects. I’ve been out for 10 years now, and I’m still finding out more and more of them. This video just hit one of them out of the park. Thanks, feel like some things inside my head I’ve been stuffing with just clicked. Excellent videos man keep up the good work.

What never made a lick of sense to me is why would God have a plan for us if we were supposed to be in the Garden of Eden? Why would he have a plan for me that i am destined to accomplish if humans were never supposed to be on earth?

1:00. Disgusting. An adult, using their authority and a microphone to call children in a crowd phonies and hypocrites. There are obviously kids in tears here, terrified. Imagine the kid in that room that genuinely wants to believe in what they're being told, simply out of fear of what will happen to them if they dont believe. And they dont know who to talk to because if they tell anybody they're having doubts, they get this treatment. Now this kid is sitting in this auditorium, already feeling guilty about their disbelief and being called a phony and a hypocrite by someone, I'm assuming, they would go to for guidance in their lives. You think they're going to look for guidance?? Not from that speaker, they sure aren't. Hopefully that kid will sit down, really read their bible, and have a good long think about the religion being shown to them. And when that backfires, there are entire communities dedicated to helping that kid recover from the trauma they were inflicted. Forgive the rant. Forgive the projection. I just know how the religious guilt can destroy your opinion of yourself, and we as humans need to be excited about who we are. Well, some of us

If there is free will in Heaven, there is no reason for us to live 80ish years on Earth, as God is capable of creating a paradise to share with us with free will and no sin. If there is no free will in Heaven then there still is no point in our living on Earth since it is our free will that determines if we "send ourselves to Hell." Either way, an omniscient God has always know who will end up in Heaven or Hell.

At 49 I’m confessing my shame, falling into this very intense illusion that I’m important. Often I think I have the ability to commune with the still small voice and it responds in kind through ‘miraculous’ coincidence. Slowly, I’m learning otherwise, much to my ego’s disappointment, that I’m just ordinary. Nothing I do actually matters because eventually I will be forgotten. No family, no friends, no destiny.

I always wondered why god couldn't tell us his plan. After my best friend comitted suicide my mom told me "It hurts now but this is all part of god's plan" I thought that's a terrible plan! If my happiness required this to happen then I want nothing to do with his plan because he's not merciful. I want destiny to be whatever I make of it, not whatever some divine being wants it to be
