Gross because for most of us the idea of a rat is a city rat 🐀. What we are was a mountain rodent, not much different from eating wild rabbit or how South Americans eat guinea pig.
@@EatBailaTravel I still find is so disgusting as eating guinea pig is disgusting as well! We real Latinos would rather eat beans n tortillas why add nasty rodents that carry diseases. NO THANK YOU
Really cool that you are reminded of home with certain foods that you ate. Funny with Jenny's mom saying "no!" to the question of eating rat soup, but very brave of you both to try it and like it!
I really thought my mom was going to react differently haha being that she's from a rural part of this state. But actually it was Kevin's dad who was a fan of the rat soup! It's also common in the rural areas of San Luis Potosí it turns out. And I (Jenny) felt more neutral. I'm a city girl and it's tough to change the thoughts I have on rats, even the clean mountain rats 😅 tried it once, cool, but don't need to eat it again. Kevin, on the other hand, I know he'll have some again!
there’s nothing like food that reminds you of mom’s cooking. ❤️ we love that you guys are doing the wine project and can’t wait to learn more about it! you should get a prize for trying that soup, though! no way we would do it! we could barely watch! 🤣
Very true at times I, Kevin, try certain foods that remind me of my mom's cooking but sometimes don't live up to my mother's taste and it saddens me. lol Once we arrived to the north and tried the wine we were amazed so hope to help mexico put wine on the global map! When we arrived to San Luis Potosi, kevin's family was like "yo we saw your rat soup video, we LOVE eat RAT!" lol Kevin says he's up for it again.
Thank you! I was super curious if she had ever tried it. It's funny how she was like "yea i would never try it" to "now I'm curious" I still don't think she would try it lol Thank you for watching if you ever have any suggestions let us know!
Great video! Loved the teases and the stalling building it up. Sitting here 2000 miles away, I can safely say yeah I'll try it. Might say something else when I get there. Was the video too long? Idk - I often hesitate to watch videos over 20 minutes, but if it looks interesting, I will watch.
Thank you so much! Let us know when you come down to Mexico and we'll take you to try some rat soup. Thank you for your opinion on the length of the video. We normally like to upload a 14-18 minute video because 20 minutes feels like too much for us. But this video had lots of content and we considered breaking it up into two videos but at that point. It was too late. This is our longest video we it was as good and we think it is.
Props for being brave and eating caldo de rata! Definitely going on my list of things to eat when visiting Zacatecas. Also, Kevin saying oh hell yeah needs to be a gif, sound bite, meme, etc etc 😂 love it!
Hector saludos! We gotta make sure we represent Chicago in the best way possible! Looking forward to the end of the Sox season and the beginning of a new era with Justin Fields and the Bulls too picking up all them players this off season! Hope all is well back at home! take care. Thank you so much for watching!
Woowwwwwwww. I didn't know Zacatecas had cool weather! I had been researching places with 65-70°f weather. Had only seen Uruapan/CDMX really. Going to have to visit Zacatecas for sure! Thank you so much for this video! Haha.
A lot of places in mexico are chilly especially the ones with altitude. But just as cold as it is the higher the elevation the more the sun burns during the day!
You didn't show the tall gold espresso machine at Acropolis. I was there with amiga December 2018. I like how you present the coffee shops in Zacatecas. I make my espresso in a moka pot, grinding Italian roast whole beans.
You inspired me to visit Zac! We are officially booking our flights 😱😍 We found a near-by winery in Ojo Caliente. The place looks like Napa Vally 😯 I’m not sure if you guys already released the wine doc video & I just missed it. So excited for this video! ❤️
ah that's wonderful! The wineries in Zacatecas really are fantastic. When are you planning to go? Zacatecas state is extra-hot right now in regards to crime, so if you're going to be venturing outside the capital city, please make sure not to drive at night or past sunset. I don't mean to scare you off, just wanting to make sure you were aware of what's going on out there at the moment. Hoping that by the time you go it will have cooled down. Zacatecas has it's ups and downs. And according to my understanding, most of what's going on is not in the direction of Ojo Caliente.
but anyway, I'm so glad you're planning to visit, it's a beautiful city and sooo underrated! our wine doc has had production issues 🥲 mainly audio issues that we haven't figured out how to fix... so, pending!
I loved this! My parents are from Zacatecas and yes my mom did eat rata de campo growing up. The last time I was there I witnessed how it's prepared, but didn't try it. I just couldn't do it haha.
You are braver than me. One of my uncles went squirrel hunting and didn't find any. So he went to the barn a shot a bunch of rats. He skinned and gutted them and cut off the heads. My grandmother made a stew, but everyone got suspicious when my uncle wouldn't eat any. In fact the dogs wouldn't eat it! That's my family history with caldo de rata. I'll stick with menudo. BTW, I'm very interested in Mexican wines. We're moving to Cordoba and plan to go on several wine discovery trips. All your tips will be much appreciated. We've toured lots of wineries in Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Croatia and the US, so we are looking forward to Mexico.
It was challenging to eat it but once we got past the fact it was rat it was better. Jenny would not try it again but I, KEvin, would! How is Cordova treating you? we love drinking coffee in Cordova make sure to get those calufa cookies and marshmallows!
My mom is from this tiny town in ZAC and as a kid she would always tell us stories of eating snake, rabbits and rats. I kinda giggled cuz the lady reassuring you that the type of rat is clean sounded just like my mom when she would tell the stories 😂❤ I kinda forgot about it being a thing but would totally try 😎
Chicago in the house!!!!! love you guys video...I would love to visit this city..but I would be in trouble. I don't eat cheese or meat...veggies, beans and rice...I think I would starve there..
I wonder when my new autistic friend from Des Moines Craig, I gonna made 2 foods from recipe me and my friend Craig gonna eat wedding roast or wedding stew and Zacatecas Style Chilaquiles on the morning.
haha don't worry, this dish is rarely made outside of the rural mountains of central Mexico. Finding the right rat is challenging and a key part of the dish! I'm guessing you'll have asado de bodas or barbacoa at the wedding!
I gotta try some of those places the next time I visit Zacatecas. I normally eat the basics tacos and burgers, but these tostadas and tortas look amazing!
After watching the whole video, the time of night it is right now, and the way my diet is set up right now, I'd eat anything. 😂 Gimme that rat soup. Cheers to Kevin. Haha. (Partner🤔, husband👌)
Rat Soup?! OK, that is a FIRST for me! What in the world?! Speaking of Rat Soup: What is the STRANGEST food you've eaten in your travels so far, in Mexico or anywhere you've visited in the world? Like the food that made you say, Uh, I'm not too sure about this! Was it the Rat Soup? 🐀 And this question is open to everyone in the Baila Fam community.
hehehe rat soup is definitely up there for sure. Actually I think it does top, but among other strange foods... I've had sheep brain before lol - Jenny for me, it's scorpion. Not tasty. - Kevin
@@EatBailaTravel my mom usto tell me my dad usto eat rat!!! I WAS LIKE NO WAY.. He was from Zacatecas but after this video I believer her lolz wow, I eat all kinds of stuff from around the world and most the stuff is pritty good... but you should have done one on the cheese's its recognized around the world brought down from Spain as they also brought cows goats and sheep and thier cheese making traditions or customs, The state emblem has Spanish Migrants on the state crest! the cheese has big roots in Zacatecas I never thought I be looking into my decedents or thier traditions, but I had a back injury and the x ray tech and the doctor sead I have an extra vertebrae? 10 or 15 percent of the world population has this and I did a lil research turns out its narrowed down to a small town in Spain and thus I remember my grandma back in the day day In Zacatecas El Monte Scobedo!! having this big room full of cheese big round aged cheese.. I remember photos of her with these big round blocks and an aging room I tried to look up the recipe but thier is lil to no info on this Zacatecas cheese she was proud of her cheese blocks I didnt understand at the time because it was like the times of no electricity and no toilets lolz straight ranch life 😂it was pritty asome!!... Nice clip though I enjoyed your content!!! Ow by the way if you look at the men they have big torsos and lil legs lolz most do some very but its interesting alot of back injuries in my family its the mixing of Spanish and indigenous people..
lmao I didn't do this for the views, I did it for the cultural experience. Plus, it's not just a rat they caught in the street. It's mountain rodent that eats plants not trash! 😄 In South America they eat guinea pigs. In Asia they eat dog meat. What's weird to some cultures is normal in others
So much variety of great food to eat in Zacatecas, but I’ll pass on the rat soup 🍜. More and more I’m thinking about becoming a vegetarian 🤷🏻♂️ My college professor once told a story about a dish he tried while visiting a country in Africa, this dish was something they called ‘bush rabbit’ and he didn’t think twice about it and ate it, later he found out it was actually a huge rat 🐀 dish 🤣🤣🤷🏻♂️ Saludos and I hope you have time to watch el Tri in eliminatorias 🇲🇽👍
The rat soup was more was more of a mental hurdle to overcome and that hurdle was exhausting! Language barriers can lead to foods and dishes you might not want lol😂We are right with you in being more vegetarian we try to limit our meat consumption as much as we can. We try to consume 3 times a week but some environments are little more challenging than others. Fer we have a question for you, do you think this vlog was too long? We are wondering if we should've broken it up in two parts. We highly respect your opinion so thank you for any kind of suggestions. We're hoping to check out the first half of the game on wednesday in San Luis Potosí. Only the first half because everything closes at 8pm due to covid restrictions. But we are really looking forward to the mexican independence next week! We are hoping to make it to Dolores Hidalgo for el grito! Saludos!
@@EatBailaTravel I personally thought the Vlog was not too long especially since it’s very informative and entertaining 😀 Although I’ve seen some other vlogs that are shorter about 12 minutes long, that way they can introduce a new video more often. I hope you get a chance to make it to Dolores Hidalgo for Independence Day 🇲🇽✌️para “el grito” Go 🇲🇽! this Wednesday ⚽️⚽️⚽️
We completely understand the hard pass. It was so much mental work to get passed the fact that it's a rat. Thanks for watching and thanks for your support! We actually have a question for you. Do you think this vlog was too long? We are wondering if we should've broken it up in two parts.
