Apparently the original Japanese creators loved the dub so much that they considered making a 2nd season just to see what they’d do with it.

This dub is a thing of beauty. I love how the voice actors had free rein to do whatever they want.

I watched this dub when I was way to young to watch it. In retrospect, it really explains why my sense of humor is the way it is. "Just fill the hole hole-filler!" "Sure. Jackass."

Plot twist the ghost stories dub was actually the catalyst that would eventually lead the forming of spilling the milk.

One full hour of Ghost Stories. A mid series about the lore of various Japanese folklore legends given a legendary gag dub because unofficially officially the anime performed poorly in its home country.

Obligatory explanation for anyone who doesn't already know why this dub is so legendary. The original goal of the show was to introduce a younger audience to Japanese folklore and capitalize on the popularity of successful horror franchises in Japan at the time like Ringu, Ju-On, and Audition that were really hitting their stride. It seemed like it would be a perfect market. However for whatever reason it just seems like it was never destined for greatness. This show was an absolute flop in Japan and barely anyone watched it and Animax lost big. They then turned to their American operations in an attempt to get something out of it. They attempted to dub it themselves with a script that was a faithful adaption of the original story. However the dub script was rewritten multiple times before finally being rejected. Desperate to make something out of this financial debacle Animax turned to ADV studios and begged them to make it work. ADV was a powerhouse in the dubbing world as it had produced wildly successful dubs for Neon Genesis Evangelion, Excel Saga and Azumanga Daioh and were surely the last hopes to turn their fortune around. Animax gave them almost free reign on the script with only three exceptions: Don't change the characters names, Don't change how the ghosts are slain, and don't change the core meaning of each episode. From that point forward the crew was allowed to run wild with it and ran wild they did. The writing process as the crew remembers was the first person who showed up at the studio to work on it would decide what jokes, running gags, and innuendos would be put into the episode that day and then everyone else on the staff had to expand on those ideas. Finally the actors themselves were given the script for input and deciding which jokes they felt would best fit the characters, sometimes modeling it in their character voice before recording. Any and all improv from the VA's is allowed as well. Finally editing would decide which jokes to keep and Animax would sign off on it. Animax's gamble paid off as the show finally caught traction in western markets and became a horror-comedy dripping with satire, potshots at celebrities, raunchy and dirty jokes, self-deprecation, and 4th wall-breaking humor.

This is one of the few shows where the English dub, however scuffed it may be, actually saved it with how batshit the writing is. I actually wonder what the original creators think about the English dub, if they even like it at all

The cuts to the theme song of School Days is way funnier I remember progressively laughing more an more as each episode got more dramatic and messed up 😂

We’ll never get a dub like this again and that’s sad. I saw this before the internet found out and I really felt like I had something special when I’d show it to my friends. It was wonderful.

To be honest, I actually watched and loved the original version of the series as a kid when it was aired on cable TV. I still have fond memories of it

Apparently partway through the dubbing process, the voice actors and actresses would start to race each other to be the first to record during sessions because the first one in the booth, would set the pace of chaos.

That dub is what most dubs should aspire to be, its pure gold.

As a note, in the second episode with the Bathroom Ghost, after Hajime chooses yellow paper the ghost was going to drag him to hell. Additionally, in the actual urban myth when asked by the ghost if you want red paper or blue paper, it's asking how it should kill you. If you choose red paper, it'll rip you to pieces and stain everything red in your blood but if you choose blue paper, it'll strangle you to death turning you blue due to loose of oxygen. The only way to beat this spirit (or at least escape it) is to say you wouldn't like any paper.

So it’s funny for the longest time I’ve only ever watched clips of this show and recently started watching the whole series and it’s odd cause some moments are funnier without context and others are funnier with the context

It's funny how they say that it isn't abridged, when ghost stories is actually the earliest example. For what I recall hearing, the original story was very bland so when it was sent for dubbing the writers decided to make it bonkers

It's been forever since I watched that show, but I remember it being alright at first, then getting really funny after a while once the writers hit their stride, but eventually they just go over the top with it and it gets too silly for its own good.

I just looked it up and apparently one of my favorite voice actresses is in this (Hilary Haag). I love that you can tell she's having a hell of a time with it.

My favorite episode is the one with the bunny. Though I’ll admit the series ending did make me cry, it was dumb and predictable but I’m a sucker for cheesy emotional scenes.

This show did terrible in Japan, and the people who are responsible for the dub where told they could do anything they wanted as long as the ghost's deaths weren't changed. I believe the employee's where in their early 20's and would write the script while drunk.
