We are on it again and have bought a big old rusty canal boat.
We have no idea what we have gotten ourselves into but the journey has began and there is no going back!
Stay tuned for the progress it will be slow but hopefully we can see it all the way through to the end!
Please follow our journey if this is something you are in to and should you like to help us along the way to get the ball rolling a little faster we have a Patreon account as well as a cute little coffee page so you can get some caffeine while helping us renovate this big beast of a project, our links are below:

I would tow it to the ship yard and sand blast the whole boat with 40 grit and then check the hull for new plate work. Then you can make it water tight with windows and doors. Going the hard way will take years to complete and then you will need to start again as you chase your tails fixing little jobs.
@nbspudley
@nbspudley 9 месяцев назад
Totally agree with the above. Don’t do anything there. Get it towed, get it out the water & see what you’ve got before doing anything at all. Totally pointless doing anything until it’s out the water.

I agree with the lads that definitely get her to a boat yard sandblaster down put a good coat of epoxy primer on her after you sandblaster then take your time figuring out what you really want to do but it's important to get her to a boat yard get her dry sandblasted down and epoxy primers she looks like a good boat I think you're going to like her

I would take it out into a dry dock and grit blast the full boat then for the hull I would spray it with epoxy paint it will last about then I would spray a primer on the rest then get it water tight then you can start to refit it by spraying it it will look a lot better then hand brush i no what am talking about I’ve been in the Industrial painting for living 40 years

Get it on dry land and get it surveyed before you do anything else…great project if it goes well, I wish you the best of luck 👍
@michaelgibney3772
@michaelgibney3772 9 месяцев назад
I think a survey is definitely in order. While it is out of the water you can service and paint the hull, leaving it in proper shape to sit wet for all the time you will be working on it.

The first time I’ve seen you two and it looks like I’ve found you at an interesting part of your journey. You could do with dry docking the boat and getting it sand blasted or it will take you forever. I don’t like to put a downer on things but until you can get windows and doors in and make her water tight and secure you may find the weather and vandals undo all of your hard work. I’m looking forward to watching your journey, I’ve never seen a vlog on a renovation of such a derelict looking boat! Good luck to you both. xxxx

Oh, good. That boat's been sat abandoned for ages. I turned it around earlier this year with my boat when it was on the other side of the canal having been set loose by vandals. I still have the scratched paintwork to show for it! I'm still in the middle of a sailaway fit-out (those at least have windows, doors, paint and motors) after almost 2 years, so I wish you the best of luck.

That is one huge task that you have ahead of you. I have been watching "Mick Blackley SandBlaster". He is also in your neck of the woods somewhere. You might get some tips from him. Unfortunately until you get the boat either moved or looking less like a derelict, you are going to have vandals causing some grief for you. The best of luck with the project. it will be interesting to see how you get on.

Stop messing about, that boat need shoot blasting will save 100 of hrs of work and do a proper job it will also show where you have bad corrosion problems that may need repairs, painting on top of rust is a bad idea you will never do a good job on that without shot blasting it.

Quite the project. A lot of surface rust there. I'd be looking at getting it out of the water and sand blasted inside and out. The inside looks like it needs it more than out. Particularly as the inside metalwork is going to get boxed in/covered up. And you will not see problems occuring. So giving it the best chance up-front would be better. And once out of the water, you can do a proper hull survey. (Which you can do yourself with an ultrasonic depth tester.) And address any issues.
@DuoVagari
@DuoVagari 9 месяцев назад
Hi Gonzo thanks for the tip on the ultrasonic tester will definitely check that out! We will be taking her out the water asap to sandblast and paint. This in itself was a challenge to organise. Thanks for watching :)

Hi, I learned 3,5 years to build these generators... and.. there is a cable, running to an metal stick... that it pushed into the ground and that gives you the proper contact to earth or the minus. There is a screw somewhere, to connect the cable to this metal frame. That is the difference to the compact Honda or other little generators. Get informed or read instructions... (If fuelstations got their fuel.. you can see, that the driver runs a cable to "minus", to avoid problems with the plus/minus ground earth.. that can result in a spark.. Best regards from Berlin, Germany

I have rebuilt boats and had one moored in the same basin a 5 years ago Its very rare to find a wreck like this that is cost effective to restore , this isnt a boat that has been hidden, its well known and so is the basin, you have to work on the basis that the hull is scrap , to buy as an amateur without a survey is not a good idea, i reccomend you dont spend any money on it until you find out if it is a doable project or you need to cut your losses.

You have a chance to start from scratch and do it right so don't over think things. Take it out of the water and sandblast the entire thing and do the proper maintence. Then start your build the right way with a clean and fortified hull properly painted. It will make the boat have a whole new life instead of one riddled with headaches. Remember to make access to the engine room and other utilities easy to get to and work on. It can drastically cut the cost of repairs and repairs are ALWAYS needed on a boat. Don't skimp when it comes to water and black water tanks because the bigger you make them the less hassle you will have.

If you choose the route of blasting I would recommend using baking soda instead of sand as it is environmentally safe and is a very good abrasive material. talk to contractors who do blasting and find out what you can. Here in California small sand blasters, which can be used with baking soda as well, . can be purchased rather inexpensively. Then an air compressor which could be rented and you're in business. My brother used this method to clean tiles in swimming pools and my neighbor cleaned the turbines from power generators and to strip the paint off of automobiles.

The boat was a steam dredger and the original cabin is the narrow part at the front with wide decks the last engine was a 6 cylinder Foden careful when you scrape the rust off in the bow cabin there’s about 3 holes just above the water line we left a 1 ton bag of broken paving slabs on the starboard side roof at the stern to keep the holes out of the water in the bow

Hi Nick thanks for reaching out it’s incredible to speak to someone who knows more about her history I did find the holes you mentioned and have made a temporary repair for the interim. Please keep in touch would love to know more about your experience with the boat.
