I had a 1991 F-350 witth the 7.3L, but not turbo. This engine was the IHI and it had zero computers and 100% old school. It. Ran. Forever. I sold it with almost 400k miles as I couldn't get the body panels to replace the rust. The engine lived on well past the body.

I think this could be a great series, not just for comparing to modern equivalents, but for showing the maintenance and what you can do with this older 90s early 00s trucks towing/offroad roadtrip ect.

The OBS Powerstroke's automatic transmission was its weak spot. A friend of mine had a '97 Powerstroke F-250 4WD extended cab, short box with the manual transmission. It was his daily driver and his towing vehicle. He kept that truck in absolutely perfect condition and put over 350K miles on it. The truck was still in pristine condition when he passed away. His son inherited it and still owns it.

The ZF5 and ZF6 transmissions were strong and were more durable than the E4OD in the OBS trucks. I would say "losing" 1500 lbs of tow rating isn't applicable to real world towing. I have a ZF6 on my SD 7.3 and it is stout.

My dad put in 35 years as a lineman at KAMO Electric co-op in SW Missouri. He had a lot of company trucks. One of them was year one of the IH diesels in Fords: a 6.9 in a 1983 F-250. With 4wd and a utility bed loaded with tools this granny low 4 speed truck blew everybody’s mind at the office with 18-21 mpg fuel economy. They kept records. These were real numbers. But it was at 55-60 mph. No 75 mph back in 1982. Oh yeah, 170 hp. I drove every truck in the fleet as a high schooler, my job was keeping them clean. So, was it fast? Compared to the 351W 1981 cab/chassis with a bucket? It was a drag racer. Compared to the smog dog 400 gassers in the other trucks? Same power. Twice the mpg. And it sounded like feeding time at your favorite truck stop. I loved driving it!

that was my favorite body style fords done. ive got a family 99 powerstroke crew 4x4 that gets 16-17mpg at 70-75mph on ko2s. i hate the k02s because theyre loud and they did cost a few mpg but it wasnt my choice to put them on there. if i try and keep up with tx traffic and do 85 its about 13mpg. its still going strong at 250k miles. it should have more but it hit about 220k and got parked about a decade ago.

After having an emission fault on my 19' Cummins truck that couldn't be fixed for 3 weeks due to parts availablity, in June I had to take my 280k miles 93' OBS Ford 7.3 idi on a 4600 mile road trip. It was not without some drama. Ended up having to replace 2 TPS sensor on that trip. But otherwise it was a beast. Even went over Monarch Crest in it. Bought a trailer in Utah and pulled it back to Virginia because I was tired of being cramped in the standard cab and also picked up a 3rd motorcycle while in Moab. Changed the oil just before leaving. Never added any. Used a half quart in 4600 miles. Not unhappy with that at all. Not originally as powerful as the powerstrokes but can be improved a lot simply. Not hating the Powerstroke at all here, just letting people know the earlier trucks are not terrible either.

I had a 1989 F350 7.3 IDI. One hundred and eighty horsepower. It could barely get out of its own way. I put a complete Banks Turbo system and Banks exhaust on it. It ran okay after that. I drive at 5,000 feet elevation and above. Without the turbo, it was a chore to drive.

For going to work a 100 miles a day getting 23.5 mpg also diesel at that time under $1.00 34 gallons 700+ miles guys the aftermarket radio is better than market radio in the 90s we did that all vehicles change the radio out. ULSD was introduced in 2007 for 2008 model year vehicles. The CP4 fuel pump is a poor design. It relies on the lubrication properties of the fuel. If you have poor fuel quality or a little water in it, it disintegrates sending shards of metal through the entire fuel system. So all the way from injectors, lines and fuel tank. Piss poor design. S&S was able to design and build a replacement pump that fits right into 6.7 Fords. It won’t blow up because of poor fuel.

I bought a '96 F Series 350 Quigley 7.3L Powerstroke in 2019 that had 26,200 original miles on it. Today it sits in my drive with 29,800 miles on it. It will easily tow and haul far more than the numbers you are talking about in this video and I would say it woukd probably tow as much as a new diesel made today and haul more than a new one. My fuel mileage is dreadful though with this E4OD 4 speed transmission. What in the WORLD was Ford thinking?!!! OMG!! I have got to swap that thing out and I just had this OEM transmission rebuilt because it had been abused. So now I am looking at either a Ford 6 speed, an Allison, or a newer more modern Ford.

As far as fuel economy between auto and stick was a wash. 3.55 gears they would get between 13 mpg. to 16 mpg. from the factory. 4.10 you probably won't get 15. The 7.3 idi non turbo in a van with 350,000 and a transmission that needed a solenoid pack (it would lock and unlock the torque converter) would run between 13 to 15 mpg. in a commercial delivery setting. Running a 5 ton International chassis with the second gen 7.3 powerstroke with a 12,000 lb, tare weight and using it for delivery work it would get 11 mpg.

Can't wait until you guys start raggin' on the venerable 6.5. Regarding the low sulfur diesel. IT SUCKS. I have to add stanadyne additive to every tank in order to keep my Injection Pump from blowing up. The 6.2s and 6.5s were decent engines for their time when used within their design parameters as a light duty engine. Their fuel efficient design made sense in the early 80s with the 1979 oil crisis still fresh in everyone’s minds.

So far I’ve had 2 Mavericks with the 2.0. The first one had an issue with idling, which eventually caused a 4WD unavailable along with the drive modes and reduced power. Only when I would idle it for 5 minutes or more IN the heat but I was able to drive it long distances and higher speeds without it ever happening. Took a few diagnostics and the issue was fixed with a rerouting some cable under the truck. Only got rid of it because the Tremor came out.

Not a Ford, but back in ‘96, the Dodge , Cummins powered trucks received a 20-30 hp upgrade, but only the manual transmission trucks, received this upgrade. Automatic transmission trucks did not get this upgrade, as the automatic in ghe Dodges, had a very high failure rate. I remember really being bummed out , when I learned My new truck didn’t get that extra hp. After all, 20-30hp was a lot back then.

7:31 Modern diesels are clean because of all the emissions crap on them not because of the fuel. There is a DPF (diesel particulate filter), SCR and regen (where it injects fuel into DPF and burns [smells like jet exhaust] out the particulates trapped in the filter). Must be able to drive for a while, so short trips are bad for diesels.
@rockymountainjazzfan1822
@rockymountainjazzfan1822 Год назад
That is incorrect. The DPF/SCR/DEF emission systems will be DESTROYED by high-sulfur fuel. That is why Ultra-Low-Sulfur-Diesel (ULSD) fuel was mandated in 2007--the same year that DPF's became mandatory on most U.S.-sold diesel vehicles.

Any significant number of plug-in hybrids begs the question; where will the power come from without building new power generating stations, and WHAT would the much needed new power generating stations be powered by? Natural gas, nukes, coal??? It's great that the oem's want to produce plug-in hybrids, it's another story about suppling the actual electricity to make it happen. Home solar could help out but not everyone owns their own home for that to happen. I have over an acre and a half to put up solar, but not everyone has that, or their own roof for that matter. It's great that people are open to at least hybrids, but until our national power grid is updated, all this is moot.
