It’s definitely 50/50, you basically go off of what the bull may increase or decrease in what you want and/or what to expect. Not always 100% accurate but it’ll always be close.
Technically they don’t have more of an effect on the genetics of the offspring as that’s still 50/50 but a cow can produce 1 maybe 2 calves (twins) a year but a bull can produce maybe up to 50
I would think you want the best you can get on both. But like others have said, a bull can produce more calves,and buying/replacing a few bulls I'm guessing is cheaper and easier than buying/replacing several cows. In full transparency I'm not a Rancher. I'm just going by what I've been told all my life about Hunting dogs. All the oldtimers I grew up with that bought or traded for a pup they wanted to turn into a hunting dog wanted BOTH Parents to hunt. So I'm guessing it's something like that with ALL animals. If at all possible you want BOTH Parents to have the traits you desire.
If I'm not mistaken, the numbers you read off at 3:30 were not EPD's but that particular bull's birth, weaning, and yearling weights. The BW, WW, and YW EPD's are expressed as differential lbs as compared to the herd average, not actual weights.
Happy Birthday Miss Demaris! Happy birthday Damaris! I grew up on a farm East river and went to a lot of livestock sales with my dad until I graduated from high school. Apparently sales have changed immensely since then! We had an Angus bull that loved to be petted and would let us kids even do so when he was lying down. He was a great bull with a great disposition. Thanks for taking us along!
