This was actually done competitively in the 80s as Monster Tanks, they were raced much like Monster Trucks and one guy even fashioned a train body on top of some tracks(Orange Blossom Express). The Bigfoot team made one with two blown big blocks in it(Bigfoot Fastrax). The events didn't last very long and the wheeled versions proved a lot better even with their shortcomings.

I know some one in the UK with a tank and to make it road worthy, he actually made new treads out of rubber and steel plated Oak. It is a hell of a lot cheaper than fully vulcanised rubber tracks. Steel on the inside to protect the wood from the steel components and rubber on the outside to protect it from the road. When the rubber wears thin he just glues new bits of rubber on.

This thing is so damn cool and I'm definitely subscribing to see what you do with it. It looks like it's an M40's chassis, which was built on an elongated and widened HVSS Sherman tank, with the idler wheels and sprockets at the front and rear being lowered as well. This was all to accommodate the heavy artillery gun it was supposed to carry and fire. Considering these things were open tops already, it seems pretty economical to just chop off what's there and stick a truck on it - if it was even finished at all. The war ended before more than a few hundred of these were produced, and production was stopped cold.

There's a lot you could do with this, if you wanted to. An unholy union with the chassis from Optimus Brine might even have enough gears to run the tracks. A GMC Kodiak body, or an F-650 would look right at home, and have enough length to look proper, but some of the appeal of it is just how ridiculous it looks, right now. Three of my favorite RU-vid people are Deboss, Peg, and The Chieftain, and this is like a mashup of all three. You don't need to worry about the engine oil.

Rich, those small wheels aren't idlers, they're return rollers for the tracks, your idler wheels are in the back of the track assembly where you adjust track tension, and those four wheels per axle are road wheels, and HVSS stands for Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension. I'm sure Kevin probably told you all this already, and if so, disregard. Cheers. P.S. The Canadian made Shermans were called Grizzlies.

@wackowacko8931
@wackowacko8931 2 года назад
It was common - as somebody else has said - to use repurposed airplane engines into tanks. The Sherman and tank destroyers had radials with cooling fans. The British used a repurposed Merlin engine in their tanks (called the Meteor). The American tanks were not very popular with the troops during cold weather, it was like riding around in a walk in freezer. The British were smart enough to add in a small quiet engine to heat the tank and to run electrical systems without having to start the main engine. It also made hot water for tea, which made it much more popular with the British crews during the winter.

I love it. Someone took a tank with the turret removed, and put a pickup truck up there. I just love these old diesels - they usually just work, even if they have been laying around for a decade or more. . . that is SO fun - the Canadian hillbilly that used it in the past showing you how to operate it . . . A tank with the turret removed would still have a drivers compartment. The whole pickup thing is just eye candy. You could operate it from the drivers hatch, or you could fab something to lift up the driver's station - it would not need a pickup truck. I do think Sherman tanks had radial engines; I could be wrong. I did work on M48s and M60s a little bit. Those tracks look pretty familiar.

This is an interesting project. You should get the diagrams of the original engine that was in the tank and put a stronger one in, the chassis will most likely be able to handle a LOT of power, especially with a reinforced drive shaft. The drive shaft is active through the chassis because the transmission had to be kept hidden under armor and also because they did not want the engine exposed to more heat than it emitted alone. But, just to throw it out there, the front drive system on almost all the tanks of world war two was a huge weak area. It seemed like every year when the Germans would come out with a bigger gun, all it would take was one tap on the front end and the machine would have transmission difficulties. This fact goes for the German tanks, too. That is why all the tanks the Soviets sent in were rear-wheel-drive. The Kliment Voroshilov 1(KV1), T34-85, JS-2, and the American M26 Pershing tanks are examples, and they basically won the war. The only tanks that could get away with a front wheel drive system during world war two were light, like the M5 Stuart series from America. They were maneuverable. But, as I said, the rear drive system tanks stood out. A good example would be the Kliment Voroshilov 2. They put a a howitzer on the chassis that fired 152MM shells. Though people read about the german tanks and think the extra hundred horsepower from petrol engines means something, it didn't mean that much when they were up against armaments that large on chassis designed to move through snow.

When radial engines was put into tanks, alot of other modifications was done for cooling, etc. Only reason they was used to begin with, was a shortage of powerful enough engines at low price. Without the heavy turret, not as much hp is needed for your speed goals. A turbo charged diesel from a medium duty truck would be easy to attach with PTO clutch / bellhousing / driveshaft setup from auxillary equipment, running driveshaft to original transmission.

Keep it a diesel,the radial is gonna be a pain in the ass to work on with the bottom cylinders and you'll have overheating issues.The detroits can all be rebuilt in frame.

@@allangibson2408 not only de-rated, alot of meteors were merlins from crashed/recovered spitfires (to begin with anyway) . With damage to their prop gearing/supercharger etc. When you take all that gubbins off the real guts of it was perfectly fine.

My father was a tank Sargent with the Essex Regiment (Tank) and spent may years on the Sherman. He'd have been all over this if he was still around. I actually have a drivers manual for a Sherman, that I'll be donating to the RCR museum here in London. If you'd like a look at it, let me know.

If it is a m43 (or more likely a m40) chassis then that is a rare fine. Only a few hundred m40s were built, and only 48 m43s were made.

To adjust track tension on these you have to undo some bolts on the rear idler, remove a locking plate, and use a BFG wrench to move the idler backwards away from the sprocket
