Come and see inside our abandoned 1880s old stone cottage in Ireland. We bought this uninhabitable farmhouse in the Irish countryside and used our life savings to make this move and change our way of life. But was it worth it? Come see what your life savings will buy you!

What a fantastic house, and you get to live in Ireland! You might find The Yorkshire Carpenter, on RU-vid, a very helpful fellow to follow. He’s been restoring a Victorian?, stone cottage and is a master builder. He may also be available to ask questions of. This will be a wonderful project for you, and I wish you every success!❤️🇨🇦

I've seen people "float" the bed in the center of the room, with a wardrobe butted up to it to form a headboard/wall/divider. The wardrobe was heavy enough so it wouldn't slide, and they finished off the back of it as a decorative headboard. It also created a dressing area behind the bed. Just a thought💕(or alternatively create an office space❤)

In Arizona we call those glass rooms "Sun Rooms" and they are Lovely, for the views overlooking your little farm....Many people build in benches around the 3 walls, with cushioned tops, for places to sit and sometimes shelves under the cushioned benches for storing books, makong a nice little light infused reading nook. (can even have a little portable table for the center, to set your tea on 🥰 Have fun...cant wait to watch your progress - new Sub ❤

Look up how to use the saw correct. The piece you saw off has to have the ability to fall away. If you put the plank on two points and cut in the middle, the saw blade will always be squeezed and kick back! Ask a cabinetmaker or carpenter please, before you hurt yourself or someone else.
@offgridirishhomestead
@offgridirishhomestead 3 дня назад
You are absolutely correct and thank you for pointing out my folly. Unfortunately at the moment I don't have the luxury of a workbench or any saw horses. I am poverty mode, working on the floor most of the time. The saw is pretty low HP, and will bog and bind up the blade before causing any kickback. K

when the only heat in your house was the fireplace, you made it your wall. when the stone got warmed from the fire, it spread through the wall, hence more heat.

I LOVE those windows that go outside a wee bit from the house. Sadly, they would have been better in wood... You may in time be able to have some stone made around the (new) windows on the outside. They do look odd being white metal, against the old stone walls. There could be someone out there to take it on. I would not give up...That always upsets me to see people put in the modern white metal windows and alongside something made of stone. In fact, me thinks they may have been knocked back if they had of said to your local council. Here in Australia, we have many old stone buildings going back 200 years. If the council finds a modern window, they tell you to remove it and use only wood. On another note, you can get someone in to 'sandblast' all the varnish off the ceilings and staircase & doors. Bringing the whole cottage to a lovely raw wood...Then you can do what you like with it once it has been cleaned down. That is one way to get it done very very quickly! It is so fast, and a great way to save weeks of work. Worth the price if you are time-poor. I have done many reno's in the last 45 years. Few things I wish I had known. Try to buy an inexpensive vacuum cleaner, that has bags. Sweeping can cause you issues with health, even after 1 reno!.. I found it is best to clean as much dirt up from each day's work...We have gone through 2 vacuum cleaners. It was well worth the effort and under $100 .Once you start to paint walls make sure they are VERY clean of any dust, from top to bottom. Never ever buy cheap rollers to paint with, you will be wasting time and they are total rubbish. Wishing you guys a great time for your lovely cottage. You're living the dream. :) P.S. Have a look on YT to see sandblasting if you haven't.

The land is at the back of the house. A 20m strip in front of the house forming the boundary of the plot, which is approx 10m higher elevation, so the cottage is tucked into a cutaway in the land. Protects it almost entirely from the prevailing wind and rain off the Atlantic, which is nice. The colour is going for sure. Watch this space! Thanks for following along. K

are you going to bring back the original fire place, take down the wall blocking it? I think it would probably look better too, especially if they haven't destroyed it but left it intact... am loving this new section & am very keen to see which way you go; putting new bathrooms in old houses is always a challenge, they always look like an after thought in most (mine is tacked on the back of the house with the laundry) wow over the front door is a nightmare disaster waiting to happen, do you need a bathroom upstairs? can't wait til the next one comes out thanx for sharing your cottage dream with us

I would love to take down the wall blocking it. Alas it seems someone has done a proper job blocking it up. It would also render our bedroom fireplace not usable if re-instated. So, lots of hurdles to doing so, not sure which way is right at the minute. Bathroom upstairs is still undecided too. Biggest problem will be it needing a big ugly waste pipe ruining the beautiful stone walls. Thanks for following along

It was nice to have a walk through and get reacquainted with the building again. It would be really helpful if you would share a floor plan, doesn't have to be to scale, just a sketch to get a much better idea. You mention the Living Room is on one end, master bedroom in the middle and perhaps kitchen on the other end. Seems odd to have a bedroom in between the Kitchen & LR. I subscribe to another channel - they are renovating an old train station in Wales into a home. They are a bit farther along in the process. Thought you might want to have a look at their channel, may be some tips or information to assist in yours.
