From an old construction equipment guy, you did well on this. Two words will extend the life of your excavator- fluids and filters. Keep them clean and you’ll reap the benefits!

Don't leave out the "lots of greasing" of the fittings. Especially on those older machines.

Congrats with the excavator, just a little tip from a machine operator, leave the machine with the boom and bucket arm fully streched out so the cylinders dont take damage. good luck and stay safe

Dude….I’m so pumped for you two. That has to be such a huge relief and definitely a proud moment. Enjoy it. When you were taking the machine to the bottom of the hill the house was lit up behind Liz and looked really nice and cozy. As a grown man who is still very much in touch with his inner child I couldn’t help to smile watching Mike just randomly digging. I would’ve done the same thing 😂

When parking the excavator, remember to arrange the boom and stick so the cylinders is bottomed out. This to prevent rust on the chrome pistons. When digging between the tracks have the idlers in the same position. Bigger surface area on the tracks.

Make sure you grease it well and often, don't slack on maintenance. I work on heavy equipment for a living, something cheap that gets neglected can easily take out something that costs a couple thousand to fix. Good luck

Great video, I only have one suggestion, get a tarp and cover the back cavity around the hoses. You don't want any of that to freeze.

Take regular hydraulic oil samples, and change the oil in the final drives if you want to save yourself problems, also do the recommended service.

Add to that swing gear oil, grease swing bearing adequately

Nice big machine. Change all fluids and filters. Remember to change the final drive fluid. Keep all the moving parts well greased. Put some diesel injector cleaner in the fuel. You can find bucket teeth on E Bay. Looking forward to seeing you move some dirt. Take it easy at first until you learn what that heavy machine can do on different soils. Watch out for sliding on a slope. You can use the bucket to help pull you forward on a hill and you can also use the bucket to slow down descending a hill. I have an excavator for my place but it is not that big but it does what I need to do.

Great job getting the excavator, little tip for you when you are tracking and need to make sharp turns lift the front of the machine slew and track to turn quicker, its also easier on the track gear.

I have had my 690DLC, it is a 1992 model it has top rollers. Have had it since 1997. A very good machine for my son and my building moving business. Congrats on your purchase. The jd 690d the last American built excavator.

Nice big machine! You'll have fun with that! But yes, be careful! I have a much smaller backhoe the size of your parents JD, hit the gate and running into things, but the work it does is worth it. Takes a bit to learn how to work it smoothly 🙂

Great purchase. You will be able to fix all of your problems with the banks and roads and anything else you may wish to do. In the end when you no longer need it you should be able to sell it for a pretty good price.

That's a beast for sure and will move a lot of dirt in a hurry or lift any log etc and look forward to what projects you may tackle and hope you do take things slow and careful at first especially as a lot of machine. I got a new KX018-4 Kubota Mini excavator 3 years ago to start company with. When slippery or hilly and moving, can lower bucket to few inches from ground to prevent sliding or tipping.

Mike and Liz, for a high hour machine, it looks like it has really been taken care of. The majority of problems I have encountered with older equipment with high hours are the hydraulic lines breaking from cracking and the proverbial seals leaking from the rams. Fairly easy fixes, although time consuming, if you have the correct tools. Nice, huge machine..

Don't know how to build DIY and off grid without the tools we've got a cat backhoe and 2 tractors to do everything we need to get done the small tractor does road maintenance and cleans out chicken poo and lots of other odd jobs the other tractor and its attachments is for a 3 acre fenced patch to raise our own grain for the chickens and for the flour for home use...am really glad you are attaining your tools .

As another old construction equipment guy I really agree with Mark L on everything he said. However I would make it three words. Add grease - There are a lot of grease fittings on that thing, and they all need greasing on a regular basis.

cool. good price for a 40klb machine. I would check main system relief and line relief pressures to see if you are set properly. it may need to have some cylinders rebuilt or pump wear, but the engine sounds good.

I checked the specs on that beast. It moves nominally a yard at a time with the stock bucket. Impressive! You'll have that mountain moved in no time! Now you need a dump truck to move all that earth.

That machine looks mint and very clean (especially being so old, 35 years....) compared what I see other youtubers buy as cheapest excavator. The previous owners took really good care of it. It's probably been stored inside for at least part of its life. Bearing play in the bucket etc also looks very little.
