We Bought the Cheapest Windows 10 Laptop from Walmart: HP Stream 11 Review

It's 12am and your laptop suddenly decides to die on you when you need it the most. Today we are going to make an "emergency" trip to Walmart to buy the cheapest Windows laptop they have in stock and test the crap out of it. We will put it through several benchmarks, including passmark, 3D mark, and unigine heaven, attempt to play Crysis on it, test usability with Windows 10, and even toss in a hint of Linux testing. Nothing was left out for this review. If you're looking for a comprehensive HP Stream 11 review, this is it.
Our test unit's specs: Intel Celeron N3060, 4GB DDR3L RAM, 32GB emmc storage, 1366x768 display, Intel HD 400 series graphics.
I forgot to mention this during the video, but the Walmart staff were actually very helpful. They asked us if I needed help earlier but I was filming at that time and was not ready to grab the laptop just yet. That staff member went off to do other things so I had to wait for him to come around again. It's really my fault that it took so long to get the laptop.

>32GB EMMC Oh god I hate those things, just let Windows 10 run on it for a few months and it will accumulate enough updates/cache files to paint itself into a corner, and then you can't even reset it because there isn't enough space. Try explaining that to someone who doesn't know how to use a computer.

My beother has a 2014 HP Steam 11. I had to install Windows 10 over USB as it was filled, and no matter what I did it wouldn't reconize the Touchpad. Said screw it and talked him into Mint.

my dad had a 64gb dell version of this. it sucked. after 6 months it was full. he removed all of his files and still windows would not reset/update after this. now he has the 500gb hdd. and even though its a hdd it still works just fine for him. he can do everything he wants. windows wont get screwed up. i think all laptops should be end user upgradeable. the ram should always be removable and upgradeable. the hdd/ssd should always be removable. maybe even the cpu/gpu?

My wife has a similar Lenovo which is actually fine for all the tasks she does on it EXCEPT that shitty 32GB EMMC. Since day one, even though I threw in a 64GB Micro SD and made that the default location for apps and OneDrive docs etc, it can not do a single windows 10 update. Even going via USB for the update file, on reboot, it can't SEE the USB until it boots into windows, so the update even fails that way. 32GB main storage is actually "not fit for purpose". Plane and simple, I'd argue no windows 10 device should ship with less than 128GB SSD for primary OS drive.
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 4 года назад
@samantha tang Yep I hear you. A mechanical HDD is slower though, and wont fit in this form factor, and is more prone to failure. As I said, make 128GB a minimum and charge slightly more, and everyone is a winner. I'm amazed at the lack of performance though. What kind of machine struggles to scroll a web browser these days? I have an old P4 desktop running windows XP that I play about with for fun, and even that doesn't have any issues with web browsing. My wife's Lenovo is actually fine too, and as I said, the spec is almost identical to this HP as I considered both. HP are known to load up their machines with bloatware so I wonder if that is part of the issue? Maybe a clean Windows 10 install without the HP monitoring crap installed would be better?
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 4 года назад
@samantha tang hmm we dont quite agree. SSD is much better than HDD which is why they are a must have item for an OS drive even on desktops. HDD is great for storage, but running an OS on SSD is the way to go. They do have issues but the pro's far outweigh the cons, and they are no longer expensive because they have become the norm.

I have one of these, really only bought it for use in my arduino projects as a controller but for me it was in clearance for 99 dollars so I cant complain, it does what I need it too and RU-vid and Netflix works fine right out of the box 🤷‍♂️ play a 1080p file on it and that also works great. I had a similar situation with an older laptop that went from Windows 7 to 10. 10 was too much for it, so I rolled it back to 7, and then dropped Windows 8.1 on it. It ran much like the 7 version did and kept compatibility with my programs. With reseller 8 licenses available online, those that want to squeeze a bit more life out of a Windows 7 laptop may want to consider going to 8.1 as it will not reach the end of support until 2023.

I have HP Stream 11 inch which has Intel Atom x5-E8000 , 4GB Memory and 64 GB Storage. I removed Windows and installed Ubuntu. But the processor could not handle GNOME smoothly. So I installed Linux Mint and the laptop is working smoothly for simultaneously running multiple light to medium tasks. Cinnamon desktop is indeed much less resource demanding than GNOME. And since Cinnamon is based on GNOME and Linux Mint as a whole is based on Ubuntu I decided to run MATLAB and Simulink which was validated to run only on Ubuntu , Debian , Suse and Red Hat. But MATLAB's support page states that it may run on any other distribution having kernel above 2.6 and glibc above 2.12. MATLAB is working fine. I have never been so happy for buying a cheap electronic product before.

Try Cinnamon over Mate for the multiple desktops. Useful with only one screen on a laptop. Highly recommend Mint. I picked up a similar class machine from Bi-Mart and also replaced Windows for the same reason. Had to download a program to get WiFi working, so this is a common issue. I needed a glitch free machine to use with the DJ gigs. The laptop with a good DJ controller and the DJ program MIXXX works quite well on Mint. Only came with a 120G SSD, but that is fine for quickly loading the program and music library. Library expansion is done with a Costco 230 Gig thumb drive. Loads are a little slower of the songs, but not a problem. Looking to upgrade the SSD soon.

7:00 That's a GNOME thing, not Ubuntu. It happens on my Inspiron 11-3158 and ThinkPad X250 too! GNOME expects users to tap with 2 fingers instead, as far as I can tell.

I have an HPStream 14. It's only "Ok". You need to either shut off windows 10 updates completely, or use an external USB 3.0 drive, aand have updates directed there.

I did something similar with a Lenovo Ideapad S100 with an Atom processor that I purchased back in 2016. The build quality was better than the comparable HP model, but everything else was the same as you describe. The Atom processor wouldn’t boot directly to a USB drive with Linux on it, but I found ISOrespin, which would take any Ubuntu based distro and make it bootable for Atom processors. Like you I found Ubuntu MATE worked best with all drivers working straightaway

I almost fell for a trap similar to this: A $230 hp 14 in laptop with pentium n4200 and non upgradable 2gb ram with 64gb emmc... luckily i escaped and got a $400 dell inspiron with i7 8565u 16gb dual channel upgrade ram and 256gb nvme

Zhou Jeffrey I’d recommend at least 200gb of storage, and 2gb of ram is nothing.

Ubuntu just seems to have a screen tearing problem. I edited my radeon config files and it's gone, now though; ALSO XFCE (over top Ubuntu) is running on my 3rd Gen Atom tablet competently, in case you ever felt the need to cut back further

The real surprise of the Stream 11 is that it's using a generations old Celeron instead of new one.

I would like to see this with some DSL, or puppy Linux. Mate and Ubuntu are pretty waity OS's, nice concept and review. It seems like a fun little burner computer. Like I'm gonna get ass handed to me at school today maybe I'll bring barny🦖🦕😜😜

Does anyone have any advice on what to do with a newer model Stream? I’m not the best with technology but I don’t really have a lot of heavy needs with it (can run Paint Tool Sai 2.0 and Zoom, not at the same time of course). I don’t know a lot of tech terms but I do want to be able to work efficiently with it.

I wonder if the Strwam 14 has the same display of my T420. Would make since they pushed it from high end buisness machines to low end laptops.

This is 4 years late, but thanks for making this video! It's interesting to me that the cheaper laptops are also the most colorful, which is a shame because that shouldn't be exclusive to cheaper models. However, this laptop would still be good for school or basic work tasks, so it'd work for me.

Ubuntu with gnome is HEAVY. You should try MX or antiX. I see you tried Ubuntu Mate, but MX is even faster and AntiX is lighter (and even faster)

Not to disparage UBUNTU but why didn't you choose Raspbian instead? The Raspbian interface would have less of a learning curve and may seem easier to use for the typical Windows user. I would love to see a follow-up video with footage showing you using Rapsbian and maybe RetroArch. BTW, is your friend going to keep the HP Stream? Sorry for all the personal questions. I don't usually post comments.

I have one of these 'cloud' computers. Picked it up cheaply because it wasn't able to update windows because of the limited storage. It runs manjaro (xfce) alright and debian (xfce). I found Mate to be a bit slower, but not by much. It would be interesting to find one of these on craigslist and do a price to performance comparison there.

More memory would be a huge help, 4GB is pretty meger these days, but I don't recall you saying anything about it being upgradeable and neither does the HP website. You gave good advice, forget this and get a ThinkPad. I've been using them for years, great machines.

great scenario for needing to buy something in the middle of the night. I have needed to buy various computer items from Ethernet cables and USB Flash drives, to internal hard drives from Walmart after midnight many times over the years. Sadly Walmart is in the process of closing all the stores at night. In my area there is only one store that stays open in a 65 mile radius now. It is very busy now at night, as people drive from all directions to meet their might time shopping needs there now. It does not sound like it will remain a 24 hour store for long though, so we will no longer gave a night time shopping option for anything related to computers.

Screen tearing is a normal part of the software compositor, if you want it gone just get mate-tweak and change it to the hardware compositor.

I bought for about $40 a Dell Venue 10 pro 5055 laptop/tablet convertible. It seems pretty good for watching 720p RU-vid and other light tasks. Instead of a dual core Celeron, this has a quad core Atom cpu.

I gottas say, with chrome os on a similarly spec'd Acer Spin 360 I've picked up for $200.... My expectations for the low hardware were blown away. It's amazing how well the wacom panel works on this device; the type-c docking for charging and display is great, gaming is possible with android apps as well as linux and lighter windows titles (via crostini and steam's proton). The battery feels like it lasts forever (8-10 hours offline youtube/netflix video playback during these Cali-blackouts) I didnt expect it to run this well, and I'm now regretting only getting the 32GB integrated storage.
