It was just a super duty truck with a permanent topper. Great family hauler for extended hwy and camping trips. They would sell like mad if Ford brought it back with the new 6.7 powerstroke or 7.3 gas. Get hold of your buddies at 5 Star Tuning and they'll make that old V10 come to life.

If "like mad" means a handful per year. The market for vehicles of this size and price is really small. And the extended Expedition already fills this market.

There's not really a whole lot you can do to spruce up the old 2v motors. I looked into that quite a bit on my F-250 5.4 2v because it's definitely underpowered. A tune can make it 'more responsive' in the sense that it basically changes a few mappings, but it doesn't really give it more power. About the only thing to substantially increase power on these motors is to drop new heads/cam on it and/or forced induction.

One of the docs I used to work with has one. Despite being our head of internal medicine and him and his wife (also a doctor) making close to a million dollars a year between the two of them, he just keeps his old 2001 Diesel excursion because he loves it so much. Fun, in the Netherlands, the total allowed weight you can drive with a normal B license is 3500 kg. 7700 lbs is almost that. So if the empty weight is 3400 kg, there is a max payload including fuel and passengers of 100 kg. So you have to register it as a bus or truck, and you need a C1 or D1 license. And you are not allowed to drive faster than 80 km/h in most EU countries.

It should be the law in the US as well. Most people driving these can’t even park a Focus. The Excursion is technically illegal to park and drive on many US city streets. The V8 Diesel engine is junk. The V10 gets horrible mpg or should I say gpm. It doesn’t get anywhere near 10 mpg with the V10.

Most cities ban vehicles over 7500 GVW from parking on streets except for deliveries or construction work. The V10 got about 3 mpg and the diesel did about 5 mpg if you could get it running. These vehicles have no place in the hands of retail buyers. I’m glad Ford got rid of them. Many places, especially HOAs, do not allow work vehicles to be anywhere on the premises except for deliveries and construction. This is a good thing. My family had an E-350 with the v10 to fit all ten of us and tow a 30ft travel trailer. Although it was not "quick", it definitely had power. My dad grew up without cruise control and even though our van was equipped with it, he didn't use it much. We would be cruising along with all of us and the trailer, GVWR probably approaching 20k lbs, yet he would look down at the speedometer and see the v10 was humming along at +80 mph in headwind. Sold it at 300k and "upgraded" to 2016 Chevy Express 2500 with the 4.8. That thing did not have the same beans as the Ford v10, however it didn't chug gas like it either.

Good review Tommy. And I like it when you 'keep it real', and by that, I mean the back seat thing. That is keeping it real, and enjoyable. You've really 'grown' into your job Tommy. You, Nathan, and Andre are my favorites. And all three of you have a great sense of humor that show nicely.

This NOT a monster. It is simply a 3/4 ton pickup with a built in canopy and seats. And with today's standards, the driver looks up at stock F150s. I bought a new 2000 in 2001. I still have it. They didn't sell back in the day as they were attacked as a the Ford Valdez. Mom could drop a couple of sprouts at the elementary school in a F250 Super Duty without anyone barking. The same machine in different clothes comes by and the howls start. Big, solid, simple, safe, cheap parts, dead reliable, respect in a lane change. Prone to rust in the lower panels but we know that now and can treat it before it starts. I've willed mine to my son-in-law. But I've got a bunch of years left. The Ex will outlast me.

Nice!!! I had an 01 with the iconic 7.3L Diesel this was one of my all time favorite vehicles ever. A few years later I loved my 01 so much that I bought an 05, the last year of production, my 05 model unfortunately had the not so reliable 6.0L Diesel. My 01 typically got close to 20 mpg all the time. Both of mine were 4x4s. The 6.0L suffered reliability issues and was not near as efficient as the pre-emission 7.3L was.

I had to sell my '04 WJ Grand Cherokee (pictured in my avatar) so I could get the 2000 Ford Excursion I now have. My wife, son and I live fulltime in our 38 foot travel trailer and needed a vehicle capable of towing our home. The trailer has a GVWR of 8,800 lbs, we usually run about 8,200 to 8,400. My Excursion has no problems towing this beast with the 6.8L V10. It even has a little misfiring under heavy load (likely needs new plugs) but I was still able to pass semi trucks when climbing the pass out of Oregon headed to Idaho on I-84 (and, no, I did not hold up traffic, I was able to pass in less than 10 seconds). You're right, the V10 is not a rocket, but it sure loves to pull! I bought the Excursion back in June of 2021 for $6,000. It's the XLT trim and looks in about the same shape as yours albeit with 200,000 on the clock. Do I miss my WJ?... Of course I do; I'm a Jeep guy at heart! But, the Excursion is absolutely the perfect vehicle for what we needed. I don't drive it much, our 2019 Hyundai Elantra is our daily driver and road-tripper, but the Excursion tows our home when needed, and keeps us, our dog, and our more sensitive belongings out of the elements and comfy! Oh, and it also serves as my mobile tool shed!

The Ford V10 modular engine is awesome if you take care of it so much torque and definitely a better option then the later 6.0l diesel option. You can rebuild them with high end rings and bearings out of the 5.4s and the 2001-2003 engine had the good heads. You can replace the entire from clip with the updated ones from the superduty, all the way up I believe to 2013 or something like that.

It may be utilitarian, but for 8-person families like mine, who haul big campers, its pretty much the only option. If you want/need the diesel, the only other option is a duramax swapped 2500 suburban, and those can be rare and expensive.

One thing you missed (maybe didn't know) is the second row bench seats recline. It's also a shame you couldn't get the diesel, much better on fuel economy. We've got a 2000 with the 7.3 and will pull ~600mi out of the tank in city driving.

Havent owned a 2004 with the 5.4 not the Power plant to have but it was lifted on 35 . It was great for road Trips . Held 8 pepole an all their stuff no Problem. Offroading was like offroading a bus. not that it wont offroad but just way to big . The one thing that sucks is ford went with a taperd leaf spings on the front unlike the f250 that had archt leaf spings .if i would a kept it i would have converted to the the arrcht spring on the front.

Had an 05 with the 6.0 diesel i paid 17k for in 2018... it literally was like a boat, the best days of ownership were the day I bought it and the day I sold it... blew the trans (bad/corroded trans ground strap, arc'd the trans fluid pump, and starved it of fluid) the day after i bought it after a 650 mile raod trip home. $5k later, it ran great for a year. As I learned more about the 6.0, I immediately sold it.

The outline and the gas tank by the exhaust gave it away. I own a 2001 with the V10. We drive it when we want to carry an extra family with us. It's slow, gutless, and cheaper than a diesel to operate. We have enjoyed using it. Maybe we'll keep it and put some 4.88's and 35's on it.

Several years ago I was in an area with street-only parking. There were neighbors that not only had an Excursion but also a boat on a trailer. It would take up half the block, where 4-6 cars could normally park. And when it was hot outside they would idle it for like 30 minutes with the A/C on. Wherever you are, crappy neighbors, I hope your commute is long and your gas bill expensive.
