There are several highway range tests out there, so I decided to test the range of our 2022 Tesla Model 3 Base RWD in mixed driving conditions. This is the car we bought from Hertz that was a retired rental car. I put together a loop of 50+ miles that contained freeway, state highway, country roads, and city streets. Temperatures ranges from 87-95 degrees Fahrenheit and the test took me over 6 hours. Can it get its projection of 257 miles? Can it match the Bolt? I will be completing a similar test soon on our Fiat and LiveWire

What is important to me is the miles per kilowatt hour, not how far you can go on a charge or what the estimated range is when fully charged.

Buyers received some great deals on used Teslas from Hertz. I was tempted to buy one as an extra car, but I already own a '24 Model Y. While I like the glass roof, first thing I put in mine was a interior ceiling shade. Helps keep the climate control system from working so hard in this Oklahoma heat. I may take it off in winter.

I am seriously considering a used Hertz Tesla. I have done the brand new Tesla thing from Tesla, but unfortunately it was during peak COVID pricing, so now they cost half as much. 😢 A used Hertz Tesla is looking pretty nice.

Yup. those interior roof shades really help to reduce heat pump, heat and cooling, power consumption. I've read that some owners replace the upper reflective cover with reflective mylar from a space blanket, and that's even more effective.

@@dmunro9076 y I got a roof shade from amazon that had both mesh, and a reflective cover you could attach, so best of both worlds. We recently couldn't resist and got 2023 RWD model3 from Hertz for under $25k, 33k miles, pretty good. It is saying 260mi range still per battery meter (don't dare to 100-0 test). The Tesla's advantage is on the highway travelling at higher speeds. The aero advantages really add up. The Bolt is much better at the regen and the slower, mixed driving scenarios. We saw that with the first TFLEV EV torture test they did and the Bolt blew away it's EPA numbers significantly and was able to recoup a lot more power than the M3P they had in that test and actually won that first challenge. I think you will see a more clear cut advantage with the Tesla when you are on your road trip. It should excel in that role. I think you will be pretty happy with how it is going to work our for your road tripping. Better efficiency at speeds, faster charging, convenience of autopilot, the Tesla charging network and navigation all just make for a better road tripper for sure. Thanks for sharing! On an added note I have continued doing some digging on the LFP vs the NCA/NMC batteries. We have been told that the LFP's have the safety and longevity advantage, BUT I found the video from 2 years ago with Dr Jeff Dahn talking about the batteries and I think we have been marketed to on the LFP. Jeff points out the strengths and weaknesses and talks about how they need to improve the LFP's for the longevity that is already possible with the NCA/NMC batteries. Look up ECS Jeff Dahn on RU-vid and watch that presentation. I think it will give you some AH HA moments. I know learned a lot.

That miles number next to the battery gauge is NOT the projected range. Thats the EPA rated range. You can get the actual projected or estimated range in the energy app in the car.

I just drove a Model 3 from Hertz two weeks ago. It was a 2023 and already had 58,000 miles on it. I'm sure that it would continue operating fine for years. But, it was in pretty rough condition, cosmetically and odor-wise.

Great range test video. I keep the battery display in percentage instead of estimated range. That range number is always based on the rated range. I was so used to the Bolt's "Guessometer" and wanted something similar on the Tesla. I now use the Energy app (have it pinned to the tray) and have it showing the projected range (actual based on driving style/conditions over the last 30 miles of driving.) This mimics the middle number on the Bolt's display. I'm now happy to see my "real" projected range now and can leave the battery icon in percent. As always, you share great information in your videos. Thank you!

I've ranged test my 2022 M3 RWD several times in SE AZ and SW NM. On a 131 mile trip at a near steady 60, with some hills, I was at 50% SOC. On the I-10, I can cruise for two hours at 84mph and arrive at a DCFC with about 10-15% SOC. Most tests show a ~5% buffer below zero SOC.

A problem with this test is that it 'took over 6 hours' at an average of ~40mph. This means that too much energy was being expended on 'hotel loads'; these are loads that are time, rather than distance related. The main hotel loads are cabin cooling and the power needed to run the car's electronic systems, and in summer the glass roof really places a heavy load on the HVAC systems.

You realize your not driving in a vacuum or perfect conditions. Most Tesla owners know if you want a more exact estimate you look at the projected mileage from the energy gragh. Just like a gas vehicle if you drive faster you consume more fuel faster in an EV use more battery, you have to account for headwind, if your using Aircon these all use up energy. I wouldn't even worry about it. I have the refreshed M3 LR and it is very efficient but know that it's 🔥 in Phoenix my energy consumption is going way up and mileage is decreasing which is normal. Just enjoy your car. I know I am it puts a smile on my face every time I get in.

That is quite a driving time commitment by you. Much appreciated. There is some discussion in the EV Community about EV’s being harder on tires (and EV tire replacement being more expensive) than ICE tires. Will you be doing a video about EV tire mileage, replacement, cost, etc.?

@aaronbounds1336 5 дней назад
I have had total normal tire expenses with my 2015 LEAF. Had the same set since 2019. Still plenty of tread on them. I think they will age out before they wear out. It’s front wheel drive and has a total of 85.5K miles on it. Front wheel drive. I got 40K miles out of my M Y OEM set of tires. I think people who have to replace them more frequently have a lead foot and drive the car like a race car. Anyone who races knows things wear out faster under acing conditions. People seem confounded by their mysteriously disappearing tires. They need to look no further than their own lead foot and harsh driving. Can’t blame them as it’s fun to drive a Tesla, but it’s not the cars fault if they drive it harshly, and then they blame the car.

Our 38k mile Bolt is still on the factory tires. I just got a new set for the Model 3 and will have a video about initial impressions out next week. The Bolt factory tires are self sealing which may increase cost, but the tires I just bought for this Tesla were no more expensive than anything else. As for wear, I’ll have to get back to you

I get over 40k miles on my Bolt tires. Those news stories usually involve high-performance EVs having too much fun and eating up tires in 7000 miles. Same as high-performance gas cars:)
@cgamiga
@cgamiga 4 дня назад
It depends on the tire, and driving patterns. Tesla OEM Michelin MXM4 Primacys (old ones, switched now) I only got ~30k on my LR-RWD, I switched to CrossClimate2, looking like 50-60k on those... partly tire, partly less demo rabbit start launches as an experienced owner ;) CC2s are also notably cheaper than those original tires... newer ones are Continental, Hankook, others that are cheaper. You can get whatever you want , same size/ratings... most under $300/tire
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl 4 дня назад
I suspect a lot of that may have to do with EV drivers forgetting to get their tires rotated because they don't need oil changes. Always get your tires rotated at the frequency recommended in the car's owner's manual, just like with a gas car.

@@pinkiepie1656 Actually, if you Google search the weights of both vehicles, a Bolt weighs 300-400 pounds less than a Model 3, depending on whether the Bolt is an EV or EUV. The weight of larger battery is offset by the entire vehicle being smaller and having less metal to haul around.

I would like to ask for your opinion. My daily commute has changed to 95 miles and I need a more efficient car than I have now. After many research it came down to the two exact vehicles you own. 2022 Bolt (~$ 16,000) and 2022 Tesla 3 (~$23,000). I only would use it for daily commute and charge it at home. Which one do you recommend? Which one has a better ride comfort and better on highway? Thank you advance!
@SpinnerEV
@SpinnerEV 4 дня назад
The Bolt is smoother, the Tesla is sportier. The Bolt sits the driver higher, the Tesla has more seat adjustments. The Bolt is a hatchback but the Model 3 has a huge trunk for a car its size. Bolt costs less up front, Tesla has more equipment standard. If fast charging is ever a need then the Tesla wins. Both are efficient and would meet your needs in my opinion. Try to sit in or test drive one of each, that’s how you’ll know.

Whoa, sentry mode must eat a lot of watts. Vampire power drain in EVs is atrocious. I have a 2011 Nissan Leaf and found if I leave it sit for a month I have to charge the "accessory" battery (regular 12volt car battery) in order to start it.

Hints for road tripping in a Tesla. First switch the battery to percent % and leave it, the miles is the EPA estimate not predicted miles left. Navigate to the destination, it will give you the real range with continuous updates that is very accurate. If you have premium connectivity the navigation will also show real time traffic and route you around backups. Watch the speed, it’s a balance between speed and range. Happy motoring. 🎉
