Came here to say this. Often women with degrees in design want to build and not just sew and paint. Rarely are we hired to do that in the US so sometimes we have to start our own businesses! Edited to add: I cannot address women without Bachelor’s Degrees in Design and their hirability in the building trades. Possibly they would do best starting in their family-run business. It’s a shame that a nepotistic start is necessary but it seems so.

You probably know it by now, but there are so many ways to avoid math doing woodworking. You can't do it entirely, but often working from reference is more accurate anyhow! I understand the need to get going with this project. But I would highly suggest that you take the extra time to e.g. level the floors/ceilings before moving on. 1. You will probably gain the time back when the rest of the installations goes easy (instead of fighting crooked all the way) 2. You can avoid creaking floors which is only good for detecting burglars 3. Redoing this later is a HUGE pain compared to doing it now. Ohh and those insulation gravel thingies will compress a bit over time, so don't count on them supporting any floor connections.

Hi Laura. It's great to see you back on this project. What's happening is quite classic: delays after delays gets frustrating. However, I get a bit worried as I see you're starting to cut corners. By not wanting to lose a few hours, you might lose several days in the end, or have a creaking floor forever. Careful there, you don't want to have to redo this again, it's exhausting enough as it is.

I don't know if cedar shakes (shingles) are available in Germany. T hey are wide and tapered and easy to split the width of the beams you have in your cellar, usually by snapping them. Putiting the taper ends together the taper will be flat but as you push together, it get thicker. At the egde of the high ceiling beams, install 2, push together until the correct height then put the screw in and the wedges will be captured. In the states, pine wedges are available and are used to shim doorways and pre made windows in the rough opening. I suggested the cedar shakes as they would cost less but, the pine wedges will make a greater thickness, easier to use and more expensive. Hope this is a good suggestion but, you have the ceiling finished by now.

what happens if you want to put new lights in the ceiling??? won't all the insulation fall out when you drill some holes?
@ynnuswatchingyou
@ynnuswatchingyou 9 месяцев назад
Yes, that's why you don't want to put the gravel directly on the ceiling planks but on a false ceiling which leaves some space to the actual ceiling. In addition there is now much weight applied to the ceiling by the gravel which is only held in place by some screws. I hope this will not cause trouble in the long term.

We have a company in the UK called 'Hippo Waste' who, rather than skips, will sell you bulk material type bagging into which you can place the materials you would ordinarily dispose of in a skip. This could work for you, in that you may be ablento place such bags onto your lawn, fill them up, then, hire a flatbed with an extendable crane to lift the sacks up off your lawn and take them onwards to a disposal facility. If you broke up the larger stuff to something more manageable, i could imagine this working quite well if the geography of your garden in relation to your road works out.

First time seeing that type of floor insulation, looks heavy. I would of gone with "RockWool" (Stone wool); it's kind of stiff and easy to cut, and I'm guessing a lot lighter in weight. But that's just my opinion. As for the uneven ceiling, you could of run a string across the it and "sister" 1X2 on the side of the floor beams to the string line to even it out. Any comment on that???

Furring strips, as you suggest, seems to be what they do in the north east of the US and I thought that would be a good solution to her uneven ceiling, too. Good call!

I so enjoy watching your progress. It is so hard when you're continuously stalled. Doing an amazing job!

I watched people get rid of concrete from inside a building to the outside using a conveyor belt. Don't know if they have that kind of thing in Germany. It seemed like a great idea.

Brick layers also use them, there are flat belt types for bricks, tiles and stuff that won't fall off the sides, and ones with 'V' rollers for looser stuff. Laura may not have mains power on site at this stage as the building doesn't look weather proof.

A conveyor belt is a great idea. They have mains power, the carpenters were using mains powered tools.

You could have scribed the boards along the walls to get a closer fit.

It's cool you put in a new floor, as this week, incidentally, my parents' house got a new roof. I see all this and realize how important it is to know how to do things in this life. So I tip my hat to you.

Naja, du brauchst ja noch eine Bodenisolation und Estrich bevor du die Fliesen legen kannst. Oder vielleicht sogar noch eine Fußbodenheizung, dann brauchst die 7cm Luft.

I'm so glad that you are able to work with areas that are not in a straight line, it will certainly make life that less stressful. LOVE seeing these videos, as over the winter months, hopefully it will get me to working on my "old house" as well! Thanks for sharing!!

Great to have you back working at your house. I’d love to see a drone shot of your house and how it’s situated on the property. Cheers.

Bet your glad to be home. With all that weight on the tunge and grove floor, you may want to put 2 screws instead of one per board per floor joyce.

Did anyone calculate the load on the ceiling from the insulation?

You can just remove the scaffolding, no? It should pile together rather nicely, then you can get more done while you wait. You can fix the crookedness with a laser level and shims. In the US we have these paper/cardboard strips for doing just that with studs and walls, but regular shims work too -- just the strips are nice as they are very long and it's more flush.

Glad you are making good progress. In US, never saw that insulation you used on the floors. It seems really heavy. Hope not too much .
