Hello, you may want to try a saddle stitch with two needles and a punch for sewing leather. You'll get the same result, but much quicker and with less difficulty. Basically you enlarge the hole and you criss cross the needles until the end, do a couple of back stich and done.
I love the tape mate and everything you do but as a diy hobbyist the price is a little steep. I’ll drop a hint to my hubby and maybe he’ll get the hint for my birthday present 😅
It’s possible to buy an imperial tape measure withe the fractions written on it. In Canada we use both systems. This is weird. I love my tape measure with the fractions.
Cobgratilations on the family and LA project. Love the tape mate. I hook my tape on my pants pocket. I just moved and now can't find my tape measure. Guess I need to make a tape mate and buy a new tape. Metric is so much easier. I use it now for sewing and card making. I used kilos when i lived in Spain . But in US is pounds so I have not used metric until I decided cm, mm was easier for sewing. I'm I'm LA now. Maybe I'll meet you some day. I'm a maker. I used to do a little wood working. Should have used netric. Metric would have been easier. Maple is my favorite too.
So glad Smudo gets to come over! He will love it so much! Congrats on the baby and all the success and hope things can calm down a little for you soon!
For a visual 1 inch (2.5cm) reference, check the length from knuckle to the end of a finger or thumb, one is likely approximately an inch in length. I noticed this on myself years ago, dominant hand forefinger is wanting from knuckle to tip ... which also I learned and used as a reference for 2.5cm as I've been trying to learn a similar sense for metric. 😂🤣
95 euros? Wow, much more than I expected. Would love to hear how much the supplies cost (including the cost of purchasing and using the die, prorated for how many you anticipated selling), as well as how much time it takes to source and produce the various components (again, prorated for how many you initially anticipated selling), because I recognize that your total cost isn't just the cost of the components and the time it takes to sew them up. Nosy me wants to know whether 95 euros gives you a 200% -or- 100% -or- 15% profit margin. (Not saying you are somehow required to tell us, because you're not. I'm just being honet that I'm curious.)
Two suggestions: Lean into the Australian term mate and make some from kangaroo leather? Sell the layout for cheap? Allows people to very easily make their own, and helps your back pocket
Measure your forearm from elbow to any spot on your hand that comes to 12 inches or 1 foot to give you a guide that is always with you .😊. Subway sandwiches aside 😅😅...
I am so happy you decided to do a remake. I bought mine today. Just an fyi I also bought a dual Stanley tape measure on Amazon that is 3m/10’🎉🎉🎉 might be good for you to have and still keep your slim size. Thanks again. Can’t wait
Laura, do you know of a sailmaker's palm? It's what you would use to push the needle through the leather when it's tough. The Tape Mate is a great idea!
I can't believe you are spending summer in LA, when it's the better time for working on the house. Isn't LA sunny all year round? Love seeing you back in the house, but I'm always excited when you go back to LA too.
Fastcap tape measures can easily be written on with pencil. The PMMR-TRUE32 Metric version and the Flat Back version are what I use. Advent Vice Versa tape measures are marked on all four 'sides' - ideal for lefties! (not that compact compared to that Stanley though) I use Hultafors Talmeter for installs - it allows you to transfer your measurement by markings rather than reading the value. It also makes quick work of internal measurements.
That would make an awesome kit. I used to love getting little DIY leather kits for Christmas and birthdays, like a belt or a billfold or something. This would be perfect for that!
oh wow i LOVED your tape mate mate .. went to order and the $ difference is slightly huge for au conversion(it like over $200).. would like to have one for sure- its such a perfect aid for us newbies @creating n building stuff x LOVE your shows x found you a couple yrs ago, when i was looking for insigh on making unique things x i been hooked since x thakx
I love my Jimmy Diresta Awl, also use it much more than anticipated ! I will send you a DM with my version of your incredible Tape Mate as the tapes that I use in one of my two shops is very different than a traditional woodworking tape measure
Missed the live stream. Some suggestions, some folks like the curved leather needles - also, having a needle nose pliers to grab the needle can help. Using beeswax on the thread helps, too.
The tape-mate is not new. I have seen it a year ago or longer in a LCLY-video, where the boss man uses it in the woods to measure lengths of felled trees. It looks nice though...
all my tape measures have text on both sides, Bosch 5m, Lufkin shockforce 5m (my favorite) and Hultafors talmeter 3m. (the two first ones are the wide type btw, and all are ofcourse metric)
