I remember when you tried drinking goat milk with the kids and you gave them colostrum, which tastes awful. I’m glad you stepped back and said ok, bottle babies were hungry, that’s why they were loud. The desperately lonely goat that kept jumping the fence, the goats that died from Barber pole parasites, traveling in a van with a buck in rut while you held a cup of ice with your teeth to cut the smell...all these things are rookie mistakes. Goats are a wonderful homestead addition if you don’t enter it blindly like you did. Your approach with your daughter is more sensible. I’m sad folks are getting the wrong impression about goats but maybe now you can correct misconceptions. Also, an evening goat stroll is an excellent way to spend time with your daughter and her girls. Good luck. And give the goats at least 2 weeks to clear out colostrum before you make fudge, ❤️🍀🐐
I have Nigerian dwarf goats. Best milk I've ever tasted. I make soap, caramel sauce, and ice cream. You will love it!!! Also apple cider vinegar (just a bit) in their water helps in the prevention of intestinal worms.
I have 2 Nigerians that I keep in a 500 sq. ft. pen. But, since I have an abundance of raspberry bushes in my woods, I just cut a bunch down each day for them to eat. They love it and it makes me feel good knowing that they're still able to get that good browse even though they're not free-ranging at this time.
I have heard that worm risk is higher earlier when dew is on the grass, letting them out later may help? rotation, rotation, rotation. Joel Salatin rotates animals in a specific order, so worms are not a problem. Still need to keep track of fecals, famanche scores, use herbal/chemical wormers. I hope your daughter has good luck with her little enterprise!
We had 160 acres in Northern Wisconsin. A friend gave us a baby Billy Goat. Not knowing anything about farm animals we did not know that goats needed other goats. On our hobby farm we had two dogs, 3 horses and Andy ran with the dogs over the entire property. He ate dog food and browsed what ever he wanted. Andy was a joy. We had to redone him when we moved to Fl. I would love to have a couple of withers just as pets. Enjoy.
I can hardly believe that a Nubian breeder would recommend the Nubian breed to someone who wanted quiet goats. 40+ years of having owned all the dairy breeds . . . Nubians are loving but very people-oriented and demand attention loudly
Crystal at Blue Cactus Dairy Goats...has Nigerian Dwarf goats with amazing lines and papers..... She is a wealth of information. I know parasites and issues can differ from state to state, but she's worth the watch. Homemade soaps, fudge, cheeses of all kinds , cream, ice cream, yogurt, milk, plus meat from the males... extra cash from breeding and selling the kids....all around an amazing investment. Your daughter will do amazing with the goats and will learn. Blue Cactus Dairy Goats is family oriented and very educational as well and fun
We have a fair amount of opportunities for taking goats off of people's hands, but we have the wettest prarie land that is likely carrying parasites, so I'm nervous about having some because I would be sad if we lost any and couldn't save them.. I also realize that loss is part of the process on a homestead. We have seen some people using goats for land management, as we want to do to help manage parasites, so maybe we will have some goats who are used to eating our kind of land. I have also seen Justin Rhodes rotating chickens through the pasture after his cattle to help manage parasites, so we may give that a shot with rotating the areas we keep the goats with chickens and/or guineas. I guess we will see. I really want some goats, but I'm nervous with keeping them because I want to be the best goat keeper I can be. Thank you all for sharing your experience and videos. They help. 💕
I couldn’t agree more with how much an animal can teach a child responsibility. When my boyfriend was little, his parens got a family dog. Instantly he took over as complete care taker of this animal. He read books on the different styles of training and he shaped that dog into everything he wanted her to be. Here we are many years later and that dog is gradually slowing down at his parents home and he learned so many valuable lessons through raising and caring for that dog.
Would love higher audio volumes for these vids... We can always turn volume down but can only raise it so high, limited by hardware, such as a Bluetooth headset vs a tv, etc... Thanks
Kikos are supposedly more hardy and less likely to get worms. However it's all in the environment in how your raise your goats. More moisture, less paddock rotations and so on can make a mess of the your herds health. Kikos and Boers have similar temperaments.
We love our goats, but they're like pets, not actually livestock. The thing with goats is, you need to be the lead goat, the Alpha goat, and you can't be afraid to flip them when necessary. Yeah, that's exactly what it sounds like. You grab their legs and flip them upside down, straddle them, hold their front legs in the air, and yell, "NOOO, JACK! BAD GOAT!" (Or whatever your goat's name is, Jack is just the name of our main instigator, and honestly, he's been a very good goat for a while now.)
Goats milk is closest related milk to that of humans. Raised my family on goats milk. Nubian and Lamancha are the best as far as flavor goes. Do not buy at the grocery store. We even pasturizrs ours. My children were in 4H with them. It was called the She-del-be 4H dairy goat club. Margaret P. Jacobs was the leader. My children had Lamancha & Nubian goats. The lamancha is the only one to originate on America. Ot'a long story. Great for raising foals. Sold alot for them and also calves. My children were not able to drink cows milk for years. More people in the world drink goats milk then any other. We had a goat stand. You could sit on it and feed your doe at the same time. And milk in piece.
Not sure why > Had my volume up as high as it goes, still hard to hear this video. Have not had problem with your other past videos and other peoples videos today.
@@kaykringle8241 we are out in Phx Az and have 2 pure kiko wethers on our farm. They have wonderful personality and handle diverse browse from green pasture to brown weeds out here.

Livestock animals have many challenges.. good, bad, ugly but all part of this homesteading life.. In our experience we favour alpine , quiet, single strand fence trainable, maintain weight & quality milk
I agree about 1st time mothers... ( I have sheep)... have had both bottle babes and dam-raised.... 1st time around.... they get another chance.... 2nd time --- you better be a good mom or you'll be meat.
Thank you for one of the most informative and enjoyable goat videos I’ve ever watched, all prospective goat owners should watch before purchasing any goat. Love you guys, you made it so very interesting. All the goat fur babies will be lovingly taken care of by their well informed new families.
