I just completed this climb 9.9.2022, hardest single day, physically, of my life. I have run 50k ultramarathons for comparison. Your video honestly made this look easy! For that matter, you make all of the hikes you do look easy!! It is a testament to you and your family that you are able to complete them, while doing so enjoyably. I wish to someday have a family such as yours, with both values and shared interests. Thank you for continuing to put out such amazing videos. God bless.

I have done it 2x… and I suck at running!! You break it up into 3 climbs Forest Bouldering Pumice / Snow Forest you can do at night… this works in your favor as you want good snow conditions at the top!!

Got to speak with that guy when I summitted last summer. He said he had summitted early in the morning and spent the whole day up there guiding and educating other hikers. Definitely helped me with the final push to the summit when I was completely exhausted. The volunteers at the Mt. St. Helen's Institute are really dedicated!

Great job! I still remember hearing the mountain explode when I was a child. I summited last (summer and winter) in 2001, in my 30's. I tried again in 2019 to re-live my youth and summit again with 3 failures, never getting past the bolder field. I have a love-hate relationship with this mountain. Great video.

Randy, Since the eruption in 1980, I have only been to Windy Ridge (overlooking Spirit Lake) and Johnston Ridge Observatory. I remember Mt. St. Helens and Spirit Lake every summer in the 1960s growing up nearby. I was Shane’s age the first time I hiked in the Ape Cave, and we went to Mt. St. Helens in the winter at a Sno-Park above Spirit Lake every year in the 60s (was where the lower part of crater is now). This is an amazing video you made with the 360° camera of your hike, you make us feel like we are on it. Welcome to the Washington State we know and great views of Spirit Lake, Mount Rainier and Mount Adams, as well as Mt. Hood and Jefferson. Nice touch at the end visiting 1980 photos and Coldwater Lake. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS AMAZING CLIMB WITH US, . . . Mike

Made It! Summited on 7/16 on a gorgeous day. First, congrats your second summit. What a special memory to share with your son. Second, excellent job on capturing your ascent to the crater. After completing this hike, I can’t even imagine filming it as well. I think you definitely captured the beauty of this adventure but also showed the grueling the nature of it too. I do want to thank you. I planned on doing this hike solo during our family vacation to Washington State. However, after watching this video it inspired me to challenge my two older boys (15 and 13) and have them accompany me. I have done hard hikes with them but nothing to this extreme. I am so happy I did. My oldest was all for it and, honestly, it barely phased him. I was so incredibly impressed. My middle was pretty hesitant because he wasn’t sure he could make it and knew it would be exhausting. He struggled, especially towards the top, but lots of breaks and encouragement and he made it. I still don’t know what my true thoughts are on this “hike”. I am using the term hike loosely. This hike plain and simple kicked my butt both mentally and physically. Not physical exhaustion but rather being bruised and battered. At the beginning of the boulder scramble, I simply wasn’t paying attention and stepped wrong and lodged my foot and ankle between two rocks. It caused me to lose balance and as I was falling I was certain I was going to snap my leg due how I was falling and my foot being immobilized. God was with me because all I suffered was some bruises and scrapes. I wish that was my only injury. I smacked my knee at full force into a boulder on the descent. Then there was the constant stumbling on the descent with the ash and loose rocks getting stuck under my feet. Like I said above, this one was just so mentally draining to me. I haven’t even talked about the endless boulder field and that last 1/4 mile of ash to summit. With all that being said, I am blessed to have been able to complete this and blessed to have completed it with my sons. It was an amazing accomplishment and an amazing site to look down into the crater from the summit. I will cherish this memory for as long as I can remember. Just not sure I will ever want to do it again.

Thanks for the memories! My 14-year-old son and I climbed St Helens May 18, 1993 on the 13th anniversary of its eruption. We had snow all the way to the top. I think it may have been easier than the rocks you had to climb over. Great memories! Have you done the trail to Camp Muir on Mt Rainier? We also did that one about a year before St Helens. I think it took more effort on my part, but another great hike for me to remember. So glad you do these hikes with your children, they grow up too fast.

I LOVE this! I have been fascinated by Mt St Helens since she blew in 1980. I have visited a few times over the years . I live in California. I've hiked Yosemite and the local areas probably 50 times, but St Helens is my #1 bucket list. Maybe next summer :)

Visited Mt St Helens two years after the volcano. What destruction we saw. We were able to enter from the east side on a two track fire road all the way to Spirit Lake. We passed burned out cars where a family had been camping. The hill side was beginning to be replanted with pine trees but the sun was so intense on every tree they had to put a 3 o'clock shade placecard on each tree, so it did not die. We returned in 2005 and were amazed at the growth of those little trees we saw in the early 80's. The fire road was now a paved road that still leads to Spirit Lake. Even though the Visitor Center is on the west side, I feel the east side gave me a better perspective of the destruction. Highly recommend everyone to go and see it.

For anyone watching this with plans to do this hike keep the posts to your right on the way up. You can see at 7:03 the nice trail they could’ve been hiking on instead of scrambling on the boulders. It’s not rock free but makes the process a lot easier especially going down.

Missed seeing you at the visitor center by four days! Wonderful video, your best in a long time. I’m assuming a lot, so please forgive if I’m dead wrong, but I have a feeling that with your experience last year, your advancing age (which I have heard you comment about before), and this being a major accomplishment with your son who is at the beginning of growing into a man, this experience had to be one of God’s biggest blessings. I’m just beginning these experiences with my twin 10 year old sons. I’ll try to not take this time for granted. We head for Alaska next weekend, hoping to visit Klondike Gold Rush NHP in Skagway, hike some of the famous Chilkoot Trail and do some whale watching. Take care.

Hey Peter, yes, did the majority of my hikes with my three daughters. It's nice to be with Shane (much younger than them), but the energy and stamina just isn't there it they used to be. :) Hopefully, we'll still have some memorable big hikes together. Randy, I'd bet wearing shorts during the glissading part was a bit of a cold rush. As always, this was fun to watch. I've not done this one, but my closest approximation would probably be backpacking in to Phantom Ranch from the North Rim of Grand Canyon back in '92. I don't remember the time in, but on the way out the next day, it took 10 hrs. and 40 min., and I slugged down 2 gallons of water during that time. Oh, before signing off, I heard the seismograph guy pronounce the chute riding the same as you. But, I've heard it pronounced the French way--gliss-SOD--in some situations. I guess it's comparable to loss ANN-juh-luss or loce ON-hah-lace.
@AmericasParks
@AmericasParks Год назад
Yeah, I heard the guy, assumed he was the professional and went with his pronunciation! Interesting alternative - never heard of that one. Enjoy your week, Jim!

I enjoy your videos! Some weight training and conditioning could be a good idea for mature adults. Ascending these mountains can be very difficult. Sometimes it involves more than a long hike. It is a good idea to start training in the cooler months to prepare for those challenging hikes in the spring and summer months.

Great question... Those two trails are probably among my most challenging. Yet I'd have to say MSH was more difficult. Stepping over the boulders and going up the lava ash at the end was brutal.

Hello everyone. I would also like to climb the summit of Mt. St. Helens in 2024. May I ask which route you chose and where you parked your vehicles? I would appreciate more information and would appreciate it. Best regards,
@AmericasParks
@AmericasParks 5 месяцев назад
This is from my trip notes: The Monitor Ridge Climbing Route is the primary route used by climbers during the summer to reach Mount St Helens Summit. It is a non-technical scramble, gaining 4,500 feet in 5 miles. Most climbers complete the round trip in 7 to 12 hours. The climbing route used in the summer months begins at Climber's Bivouac south of the volcano. At 3,700 feet elevation, Climber's Bivouac has the highest vehicle access on Mount St. Helens. Start on Ptarmigan Trail #216A which climbs 1,100 feet in 2 1/4 miles to timberline at 4,800 feet elevation. Above timberline, the route generally follows Monitor Ridge, climbing steeply through lava flows and loose pumice and ash. From timberline the route is marked with large wooden posts to about 7,000 feet elevation. The upper 1,300 feet of the route is unmarked and covered with loose, rock, pumice and ash.

How this hike compare to the hike from paradise to camp Muir on Mount rainier ?
@AmericasParks
@AmericasParks 11 месяцев назад
The Camp Muir hike is a little longer with some more elevation change. Yet this hike has the added challenge of bouldering and hiking up lave ash. Overall, I'd say they are relatively comparable.

Were you happy with your trail runners? Or would you do it again with boots?
@AmericasParks
@AmericasParks 10 месяцев назад
Really set that brooks trail-runners are the go-to shoe for me. The support of a hiking boot might have been beneficial for the rock section, but for the rest of the hike, the lighter and more comfortable gym shoes were the way to go.
