The May 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens was a major geological event that rocked the nation and showed the destructive force of our beautiful cascade volcanoes. 42 years later, we paid a visit to the Mount St. Helens national monument to check out the amazing scenery and learn more about the history of the mountain and it’s powerful eruption. We visited the Johnston Ridge Observatory and hiked out to Devil’s Point on the Boundary trail to take in the views of the mountain, the Toutle Valley and Spirit Lake where trees blown over from the explosion can still be seen.

Wow! That’s INSANE. I was in Seattle this summer and I never got a chance to see Rainier or St Helen’s because they were too far away, but St Helen’s looks like another planet. Incredible after all these years how nature rebuilt itself. 🌲🌋

It is one of my favorite places to visit in the Pacific Northwest. If you get back out to that area you have to see these mountains. And you got to get out on the trails away from the visitors centers. You’ll have to check out our other video on our channel about our visit to Rainier.

Yes they were. It was a little chilly but well worth it.

It's actually closer to Portland, OR, than Seattle, WA. Many people here saw the eruption from their backyards in North Portland. It's amazing to see both Mt. St. Hellens and Mt. Hood from Downtown Portland, OR.

Can you only imagine what it was like to see Mt. St. Helens explode! Where were you on May 18, 1980?
