Yep. They did this to my brother in Iceland and because we didn’t realise this was a thing, he had to pay £400 (!!!) for 2 small scratches on the roof. Completely tainted the entire holiday.

This is possibly the best advice you will ever give. Ive been around a long time and I've seen hire companies do this many times. It used to be easy revenue for them. Fortunately its getting harder now with phones and social media

Another tip: if there's only two (or three) of you, van hire can be cheaper and they're usually less precious about scratches etc
