Answers to many questions raised in the podcast 1) English actors - In most Indian films they just get any rando white guy tourist for the small roles but in this case they did hire good actors but the direction (imo) was intentionally goofy. 2) Masala Genre - A mix of different genres within a film is a staple of Indian cinema, we have grown up on it and I would say RRR is the best example of it. Riley you nailed the pronunciations. That was a great synopsis, better than Wikipedia. 3) Bridge scene - If you notice in the first 3 Action set pieces (1000 men fight, Tiger, Bridge) there are no dialogues for the actors throughout. Thats a big deal specially when they meet and come together. To do that is just next level in accordance to Indian films. So them pulling off the rescue without even talking is great visual storytelling. 4) Regarding the Controversy - Its like forcefully digging holes to make one's point. The last appearance of both of them in the film is actually there real life look, so the whole argument falls apart. 5) Bangle - Even I have no idea being an indian what that bangle resembles. i thought its just something she feels of her home looking at. 6) Why the interrogation - What they know about the shepherd is that he will go to any length to get the girl. When that dude meets raju he says me and my brother are here to take revenge and raju knows this guy cannot be the shepherd hence his brother is. 7) About the comedy with Bheem not knowing english works really well and relatable to a lot of Indians. I think its the innocence that sells it well My father loved bheem and also felt he was done dirty. David if you watch the film again, you will notice its very obvious what raju is doing, the film is not trying to make him look bad. 8) Both not revealing each other about is well setup. Bheem later says that he didn't want to risk rajus life. Before the bridge scene also his brother almost saved himself from raju (police) so they were more cautious. If you remember there was scene them eating together and raju notice something about bheem (akhtar atm) and remembers something and later we find out its similar to his brother in the backstory. So he did have a different vibe about bheem and didn't doubt him. Yes David it was the same beats used in the song Naato, when raju is poisoned and the jail break scene. 9) For most indians (there are exceptions) we are very emotion driven, if we connect emotionally we are all in but if its not we will also shred it asking for logic. There are people who hate this film in India and thats totally fine.

Just to add to your points: Regarding the interrogation, Lachchu mentions that the British took a girl from their tribe. And he came along with his 'elder brother' (to tell us that his brother was the one leading the plan). At this point, it is clear that the shepherd is the 'elder brother' Regarding the bridge scene, I think Rajamouli wanted to show how these two guys were having this understanding. Regarding the bangle, there was a black marking on it which seemed like a message. Maybe Gonds did have their own script which Rajamouli didn't want to show but not sure. The reason Raju did not release Lachchu immediately is to make sure that he is still captive in case he can survive the snake bite.

Just To add on Bangle part : If you see NTRs hand during fight with Tiger in introduction shot , you can find tatoos specific to Gond tribe. SO NTR has drawn same tatoos on bangle to intimate Malli that they are on the way.

For the guys who are saying it’s not India’s inception, inception didn’t make Hollywood cross cultures or increase its viewers. Titanic, avatar, Jurassic park did. Those are not intellectual movies good story great passion of directors and really good understanding of what people want. That’s what rajamouli literally is he’s not Christopher Nolan he’s James Cameron. And that’s what many Americans are thinking, currently there aren’t many passionate directors in Hollywood who are thinking movie is to entertaine audience or to just have fun. Let rajamouli make the world turn towards Indian cinema and they’ll slowly appreciate other classics. Don’t kill it just because it’s an Indian cinema I know we are always fascinated by something which is not ours.

Agreed and you need to understand that for centuries wars all over India was fought in many variation of a dhoti (single long piece fabric worn as 'trousers'). And the temperatures in south are sweltering hot and it's so mundane to see men top less and in a dhoti.

@VPN what you spoke is 100% rubbish. Not because what you say is false but because what you say is stupid comparison and largely propoganda history. And no it wasn't 500+ empires. Wtf is that even. It was 500+ princely states with only a 100 or so of them being kings. Rest are all Zamindars and Princes and such. Not kings. There was no empire by time British took over. All empires had been defeated and ruled by Muslim royals or British themselves. And most of all, 100% of what you said is totally unrelated to my discussion. You are speaking garbage when the discussion is about something else entirely. Learn to read and then respond.

That’s is the exact reason why rajamouli put those intro scenes in the beginning of the movie to show you how exactly what type of movie it was gonna be. Most people bought it but James thought it was cringe! Tbh I could tell the moment he said he planned to watched this movie in two and was distracted that he wouldn’t like it. As an Indian, I actually found this movie extremely cheesy and over the top more than usual Indian movies. The spectacle, the emotions and everything is so over dramatic and over the top that it is really hard to connect with it. Trust me, there are lot of Indian movies which do a better job at conveying emotions in believable fashion while also providing epic moments and spectacles just through story reveals. Common criticism that I hear about Marvel/DC movies in my country or atleast the people that I know is that they are fantastical and not realistic enough when the same people celebrate a movie like RRR. If you can look past the level of silliness in RRR, then you should not have any criticism in any Marvel/DC movie ever. I mean even pixar movies, despite being cartoons, have some grounded feel to it given the context in which they are set in.

Few points to note When they say "brother" in the subs it better translates to "bro". It doesn't literally mean brother. Also the clothing he wore was not right wing and was historically accurate. Also the romcom part was pretty funny and I think a lot got lost in translation. Most indian movies have some romance in it whether its a romance movie or not. Another thing is that the songs are really good in telugu and you might want to listen to playlist of the songs in telugu. Also a lot of south indian movies have fights with a lot of people.

Well. i have to give a clarification about the bangle. In India, most tribes have their own symbols . They usually tattoo that symbol/pattern on their body . If you observe in the first intro scene of bheem when he is shirtless, a pattern/symbol is tattooed on his bicep. So, when you see bheem making a bangle , it has a symbol of their triben on it which malli sees when jenny gives it to her conveying that someone from her tribe is their to rescue her.

Simple things about this film and Indian films 1. It’s not made for western sensibilities, it’s for mainly South Indian audiences. We actually enjoy this kind of cinema, as James wanted to know. The filmmakers know it’s over the top, we as audiences know it too. But we are unapologetic about it. It doesn’t feel jarring at all for us. I have seen almost around 3k films in my lifetime, all languages. But movies like RRR strike the emotional core in me. It’s like hearing a song from your favourite artist or eating mom’s food. 2. Films from industries other than Bollywood are finding wide audiences only recently after a long time. It’s being understood that majority of film goers who watch Bollywood movies have missed the unapologetic hero worship movies which you can go as family and enjoy, the south industry are offering them in terms of well written, acted and made movies. Coincidentally it was this directors previous two movies “Bahubali Part 1&2” which brought this about. Now movies like these are being called “Pan-Indian movies” - as in movies that appeal to people of different languages. 3. It’s surprising for us to see RRR getting so much love in the west. I partly sometimes mostly put it out to the lack of original exhilarating movies from Hollywood. But credit where it’s due Hollywood has given us Everything everywhere, Northman, Maverick, Unbearable weight, etc this year. 4. Hey if you don’t like this kind of cinema, Indian have other movies which might be in your ballpark but you know they are trying to pander to the west or trying to imitate the western sense of filmmaking. 5. If you do like these kind of movies, Indian cinema can offer you a plethora of content. All you need is find someone to give you recommendations. Love your Podcasts guys. It’s nice to be on Riley’s side for a change. Also I like the fact that you are not pandering to Indian audiences for the likes and subscribers. But if you guys are seriously interested in watching some iconic Indian films, will be very happy to give recommendations not hypes.

48:05 You think a guy living in a the middle of a jungle would be as groomed as Ram is? Tf, man? Some of these points r just so foolish. Only takes a little bit of thinking to understand why something is a certain way. And even if u didn't get it by just thinking, they actually made the effort to point out how oblivious he is to all of that when Ram points out that needs at least have a change of clothes before going to that party where they do the dance-off. He was just gonna walk in there in his normal attire. He's from a completey diff society and way of living, so see him that way. That also factors into how pure his purpose and actions/decisions are all throughout this movie. This wasn't something lost in translation, you just didn't THINK. 51:41 That, I def agree with. But, that little right-wing controversy u mentioned would've actually been "slightly" justified if they had done that. Ram's attire is symbolic of Lord Ram (cuz the director is a massssive fan of those tales), BUT it was also what the freedom fighter Actually wore in real life, so it's justified to have that. But, if they had also given Bheem some godly attire, which they could've (cuz his name also resembles some legendary figures), then those ppl complaining would've had a field day with this. So, probly for the better that they didn't do that. 1:07:50 No, we're not dumb, James. Everyone knows it's unrealistic, but it's FUN. It's entertainment. That's why we go to the cinemas. To laugh, be entertained, and have a good time. Enjoy the epicness of these. Not to go and fkn nitpick every little thing that defies the laws of physics and call it cringe. Just FUN, man. It's that simple. Thankfully, 90% of the ppl who watched it, loved it, and understand that. 1:10:10 You gotta see the CANON in terms of Indian Cinema as a whole. In that, almost all the main chars in commercial films Will at least be slightly superhuman in nature. They won't wear some superhero costume, but if they're main chars, they're super. So, next time, don't be surprised by it. That's just how it works here. A bit silly, but again, it's just to increase the "fun" apsect of the cinema experience. There r grounded movies too, but they're not usually produced at this scale and aren't marketed as much, so they never come on ur radar. But, there's something of great quality for all types of ppl. (Also def the longest comment I've ever written, lol😅)

These guys whole discussion is cringey bro. Silly nitpickers. They don't feel cringey when superheroes make silly unnecessary, unwanted, never asked jokes during serious battles that they think it's cool & don't definitely have problem with Blackwidow & Hawkeye fighting freaking aliens though they are normal Humans like us. They don't nitpick about how Hawkeye never runs out of his arrows. If people started to nitpick about the silly unwanted Hollywood superhero stuff, their movies couldn't even get out of their country. I still don't understand why do freaking adults fight in avengers for silly coloured stones like I did for coloured pebbles when I was a kid that too with a purple dude who thinks this whole universe would end because of his snap from a silly glove. Are we that much silly to believe in that childish stuff? How can a super solder(they say) serum is so powerful than that of iron man tech that captain America or Texas whatever could lift a hammer of a god? While hulk s*it's while lifting it . Bruh moment! I can nitpick so many things about the silly stuff that marvel thinks it's doing awesomely well just because they have big budget. I never felt so sleepy in a superhero movie than that I felt in end game. So boring & silly & overhyped to death just because of the older films. I still don't know how could they understand multiverse stuff that comes out of nowhere just because it's superhero movie but they can't understand a simple movie like RRR & are asking why, how & saying terms like cringey as of it was rocket science. Bro looks like they watched RRR just to nitpick & tear it in & out just because it's from India.

It harden as it get colder. it takes 2 min to make. it is called "Lacquer bangles." if you search it you may get the idea. I personally think, if they had better setup for bangles it would have been better. Like if little girl at the start of the movie give those same design bangles to governor's wife and Bheem know that design becoz he is from same tribe. or they can even add 5 sec of tribe guy making those same bangles. No one pointing out but 2 Deers and 1 Tiger were in same cage. Even Though this film choose certain style, most of the errors can be fixed by little rewrite without compromising.

James was disappointed because of his expectations, this wasnt ever meant to be schindler's list, its a commercial movie made to be enjoyable, compare it to marvel and not schindler's list. If you want a serious movie about independence movement that is made to be accurate and realistic, there are many options the most recent of them being sardar udham, give it a try and you might enjoy it.

Another thing to add while watching Indian cinema including telegu/Tamil/south Indian movies, I think they tend to incorporate mythical elements. Their protagonists are often portraying heroes from Hindu mythology and the moves are showcasing some version of the fight between good and evil (Ramayana or something similar). That is my personal takeaway.

1) the reason Netflix has only Hindi version outside India was probably because people don't really know that India has so many languages and most of the people especially westerners think we have a homogenous language (Hindi). 2) the movie was shot in both Hindi and Telugu, the other languages it has were dubbed but every shot was done twice, one for Hindi(in which the actors actually spoke in Hindi) and one for Telugu (in which the actors spoke in Telugu)

No offense. One thing I understood is that you didn't watch the movie properly. Bheem doesn't want to bring his friend Ramaraju into any trouble by asking him to help save Malli. Bheem is not flirting with Jenny. Since she is kind-hearted, he want to befriend her and enter the Mansion to get to Malli. Ram is just teasing his friend about Jenny. Since she talked to him, he is teasing him. While rescuing Ram, Bheem used the same music beats of Nacho Nacho/ Naatu Naatu song. The bangle has the artisitc marks of Gond tribe which reminds Malli that her brother is coming to take her back and give her something to remind of their village. Ram asks about Lacchu's brother bcz initially when they met, he said he will take him to his brother. It is common in India, to call other persons as brother. I think it's common everywhere. One clarification is that, it's not a propaganda movie. There was no discrimination towards any other religion. In telugu movies, there is no propaganda.

@1:01:01 even in the song, they are on their missions like bheem feeding the animals, looking at the building for malli... ram getting a portrait of lacchu, chatting with his uncle about places to cover, searching for the shepherd (there is a shot in the song in which both ram and bheem walk side by side next to a fence, and there is literally this lyrical line that says both are on the same path, but searching different things)

Love this movie so much. One of my favorite moments is during the Naato Naato dance party scene, and Ram taps out to let his bro win and look good in front of Jenny. Just.... ah it's amazing, pretty sure this is movie of the year for me. Edit: just have to add that it's strange how our western cinema tries to be so much more gritty and real, but RRR ends up feeling more truthful in a way. Like if this was a hollywood film, there is no way in hell Ram and Bheem would have been able to reconcile after all the deception came to light. And that might be more realistic to how things would play out IRL, but only because most of us lack the humility to admit when we're wrong, be vulnerable, and apologize.

Pretty sure you can't tell because there was none except releasing it on Netflix. It's success in the west is based purely on good word-of-mouth. Deal with it! WOW I LOVED THIS PODCAST! Indian fan this side and so much to say but I will restrict myself to only this since I feel you guys were really seeking an answer to this:- The OTT action and dance sequences are more or less universally accepted as a means of entertainment among the Indian audience where we too engage in this "suspension of disbelief" in order to merely enjoy and have fun, no matter which region of India we belong to. We have seen a lot of larger than life, massy films (and characters) acquire iconic/cult status throughout the evolution of Indian Cinema and thus it has pretty much become an indispensable part of our movie experiences

Comparing Indian cinema with America cinema is quite a misplaced attitude. First of all American and Indian culture, history, and civilazation roots are poles apart and different. Saying that Indian cinema has musicals what American cinema had couple of decades back is grossly ignorant observation. Indian cinema always had musicals as music dancing is an integral aspect of Indian culture, society and people. Please do some research before doing a podcast if you want likings of Indian audience too.

Not all Indian films are epic, over the top, historic and high budget busters.... well, that's what's gaining the high amount of recognition world wide but I'd like you to check some grounded stuff from the southern and the North Indian cinema as well. They're not necessarily bollywood but here are some suggestions from a few directors and Actors where you can start from 1. Films of Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur part 1,2) 2. Shoojith Sircar's "Sardar Udham" (Got rejected for an oscar submission due to political reasons of how the film potrays against someone but it's very dumb of them to cancel on those aspects since we have films like Schindlers' list) 3. Lokesh Kanagaraj's Kaithi and Vikram.... (A universe of it's own) 4. Hey Ram by Kamal Haasan ( Like literally, he wrote, acted, directed, produced and is also a dance, make up artist, choreographer, Technician, singer and a lot of other things you can explore) 5. And for nice romantic films that hollywood might not have ever done or seen is a film called 96 by Vijay sethupathi and Trisha
