It's a trifoliate orange. It's used as a rootstock due to its hardiness and the fruit is not intended for culinary purposes.

I think you can make jelly with them that's about it. I planted some here in north MS for rootstock and to see what the jelly is like.

It's not pure trifoliate orange, they are much smaller and seedier. It's either citrumelo (trifoliate orange x grapefruit) or citrange (trifoliate orange x sweet orange). It looks like Swingle citrumelo to me.
@agapefield
@agapefield 10 месяцев назад
It is a Trifoliate Orange. My Daddy grew them for rootstock for grafting all other citrus tree cuttings. The rootstock is very hardy. Momma was French and used the juice to marinate Chicken. She even used the zest for cookies. Daddy also grafted 15 Pecan trees.

I worked at a wholesale plant nursery and my boss showed me that if you're expecting a hard freeze that you should mulch it way high 3-4 feet up the trunk to keep the graft intact then if possible wrap the rest of the tree with frost cloth or even old sheets. If the top freezes the root and graft will still survive and eventually recover. It really work!

Citrange, a hybrid of sweet orange and sour citrus. Bred for cold hardiness as a rootstock. The fruit is bitter and will never sweeten. In fact, it can be used to make bitters. Honestly, I would cut it way back in March and regraft it with one of your other favorites. You have a good root system and it will grow a new tree quickly Citrus are a true semi-tropical and do not require chill hours. Citrus often bloom and have fruit at the same time. It's not unusual.

This looks more like citrumelo (trifoliate orange x grapefruit) than citrange (trifoliate orange x sweet orange) to me.
@a.chandler6993
@a.chandler6993 10 месяцев назад
@@WallyJoyner that's also possible. Swingle was a very popular rootstock for many years. Carrizo is faster growing, so growers are using that one more now. Either way, regrafting is a good idea if Danny and Wanda want a tree with edible fruits. Swingle is pretty tough rootstock, so that wouldn't be all that bad if you are correct.

about your citrus. i live in madeira, and our citrus acts just like yours. citrus here normally ripens in winter, because that is when we have plenty of water. it is quite normal to have fruit in different stages, and if you keep picking the ripe fruit, the tree will bloom again. if you want to know about your mystery citrus, wait till one falls off the tree, then you know what they look like when they are ripe. but it looks like a wild lemon to me. the colder the environment, the thicker the peel.

It's a variety of Citron. You pick it when it's yellow. The thick rind and tart and bitter taste is a dead give away. The tree you lost was probably grafted to a Citron rootstock.

If your original tree was grafted and Wanda picked the cutting from the rootstock it could be that cultivar. Trifoliate orange or “sour orange”, is a common rootstock for citrus. It is known for it’s bitter fruit, wicked thorns and makes a great hedgerow. It is also more tolerant to cooler temperatures. I learned about this in my permie class on grafting. Just my 2 cents. Maybe look it up? Happy Turkey Day! Be blessed ❤️🌿

Yes! It’s a trifoliate orange. See Green Dean at Eat the Weeds as to how to use this. I have a small tree that has given me a few fruits. I have combined them with sweet oranges to make a Seville style bitter marmalade. yum! It’s hardy to -20 F. It will survive the winter. I’m in NW Arkansas Zone 6. I grow my citrus trees in containers. They are outdoors in the summer and inside in the winter. Very reliable fruit producers. The Owari mandarin is one of my favorites. I love the cheerful little Calamondin fruit. Use the juice like a little lemon. Candy the peel. Enjoy the bounty!

Happy Thanksgiving Danny and Wanda. The citrus fruit you picked reminds me of what we call a "sour orange" in Florida. You can often find them growing wild in the woods and forests. We preserve the zest and just the juice for marinades.
@scarshayla
@scarshayla 10 месяцев назад
As others have already said it's most likely a trifoliate orange. They grow here up north because it's the only citrus that can grow without protection from the climate. When big the plants have wicked thorns. While the fruit can be eaten and prepared in a number of ways there's something else that needs mentioning. Some people are actually allergic to the fruit and can get a bad reaction from it. Of course that's only something you'll find out from trying. I'd start with a small piece to try first. Good luck ✌🏼

In Australia, our citrus trees always have from blossoms to ripe fruit on the same tree. So to me, that's normal. Your mystery fruit is what your tangelo was grafted on to. I recognize the fruit shape. It's a type of lemon. The freeze killed the graft.

There are many citrus types that some might no being well know. We were having dinner at a friend's home but my friend had not lemons for the guacamole, so my friend went over to her neighbor to ask for some "sour oranges" from a big tree. To my surprise, it was a strange fruit, looked like a sour orange with a broad nipple in the base just like sweet "Lima" Citrus limetta, its juice was sour with a hint of the sweet "lima" very nice taste, I am grafting it on my sour orange. You tree is not Citron as it has being suggested I do have also a citrus tree with fruits very much like "citron" but with no seeds, its juice is so aromatic and better balanced than the juice from the lemons or lime. Citrus are being taken down by HLB in several places including MX where an insect introduce a devastating bacteria, so we must observe the trees and take preventive actions to stop its spreading. Happy Thanksgiving! I have such a wonderful memories from friends and places in USA:

That thorny bush is a wild lemon tree from the Citron family. They are native to the lower Appalachian. We have a bush here in Alabama, zone 7b. I have read they cross with other citrus but don't have any so don't know for sure. I'd guess a little bird dropped that seed for you. We haven't been able to find a good use for them, but I'm sure there is one. We have found that the juice is very, very sticky. We pick them when they begin to drop.

It's the root stock not the graft that makes sweat oranges. We would find them around old abandoned homesteads. We use them to marinate wild hog to cut the gamey taste. But you ant eating them like a orange unless your really desperate they will never sweeten up no matter how long you leave them.
