I love it , he gets insulted at being called a mooke , then ask what's a mook. After you seen it a couple of times you can see the incredible humor in it
same thing happened in a bar i went to as a younger man, a guy called another guy a "bovril" the fact that they didn't know how exactly they were being insulted made the whole situation flare up beyond belief, lol - BTW, my only knowledge if what a "bovril" was, was a delicious gravy drink in the UK in the 90s, lol
Charlie Murphy on the Chappelle show regaling the tale of his big mouth buddy calling an LA gangster a MORON at a sausage sizzle. Charlie thought it was curtains for Big Mouth.... LA ganster did the pause just like here, and said to his LA gangster friend next to him: "What's a moron?"
Actor George Memmolli, who played Joey who famously says: "And we don't pay mooks,." died young under tragic circumstances. He was filming a movie and was a passenger in a car with a stunt driver, and the stunt driver unintentionally crashed the car, severely injuring George Memmolli. He later died of the injuries he suffered in that unintentional car accident on the set.
There was a deleted line from De Niro at 0:36 (you can see from his lips). I looked it up and it was "I wouldn't fuck them with your prick." Sucks that they had to take it out.
It's so funny the way he refuses to explain what a mook is, and then goes "ill give ya mook" and punches him. Also the timing and editing of the punch is hilarious it's like a cartoon.
0:36 For those wondering, Johnny Boy actually says, "I wouldn't fuck 'em with your prick." For whatever reason this line got edited out, only recently been put back into the movie on the Criterion 4K.
George Memmolli, Joey “Clams,” was great in this scene. And I love that they didn’t cast some pretty boy to play this character. Gave the scene an authentic gritty feel to it.
FrankSlade1983 Lol The "other guy" brought Deniro and the guys as a show of muscle to collect a gambling debt. So the other guy is a mook for bringing the guys around and starting sxxx in the pool hall.
One of my all time favorite movies. Robert Deniro said that "Joey" (George Memoli) was supposed to play the guy in the back seat (that Martin Scorsese played) in "Taxi Driver" (if you've ever seen that) but he got sick or something.
(Joey) "Hey whatsamatter wit this kid huh??" (Johnny Boy) "Hey there aint nuttin wrong wit me my friend Im feelin fine" (Charlie) "Keep you mouth shut!" (Johnny Boy) "Hey you tellin me this in front of THIS azzzzzhole?"
Jimmy the Mook's style of fighting is to just grab any object in the environment and knock it down in front of his attackers. He does this for the entire fight, AND, he does it again later when a 2nd fight is about to begin, he knocks over a pedestal as he flees outside loooool
Being that Scorsese admires Allen Baron’s “Blast of Silence”, I honestly wonder if from a visual perspective he had Larry Tucker in mind when he cast George Memmoli (I realize Scorsese and Memmoli were also friends).
A 'mook" is a term likely derived from "mamluk" , the Islamist slave soldiers who drove the Crusaders from the Levant. Here in New York there is no precise definition for a "mook" but we know em when we see em
