We Dont Talk About Bruno by Voiceplay : Reaction!!! 

On a Zoom call with patrons while he was working on this arrangement, Layne said that he hoped they could get Ashley for this one. She had worked with them once before (If I Were A Rich Man) and thought she would be perfect. We also were on a live feed during the shoot, where we learned that Geoff is exactly one women’s size larger than Ashley for their blouse and shorts. And when a fan doesn’t do the job blowing flower petals, a leaf blower does work! VoicePlay is not only multitalented, they are also a great group of guys that really care about their craft and their patrons.

One the patrons asked Geoff which god had his parents sacrifed to in order for him to be this talented. Not just the voice but his arranging skills and everything else. He keeps forgetting to ask them so we'll never know. :) Quick reminder: Eli is pronounced as ellie. Rhymes with jelly. :)

Katie and Voiceplay both have an association with Disney. Voiceplay is located in the Orlando area and has a history with Disney World. In fact, Geoff met his wife while working on stage together. ... Guy

I love how Geoff is playing Camilo the Shapeshifter hence his changes from Bruno to "Isabela" and back. :)

Another wonderful thing about Voiceplay with these songs is that there is SO MUCH going on. You can listen again and again and hear/see different things. For example, when Cesar and Ashley are doing that whole back-and-forth thing, and he sings “I’m sorry mi vida go on,” watch Geoff’s face. And when Geoff is wearing the blouse and full-on Disney Princess, check out the side-eye he’s getting from the others. There are several places where the background singers have this really spooky reverb. And the light changes-Eli is killing it with the lights! When Layne arranges a song there is likely to be some really innovative beatboxing, a lot of humor, and guaranteed, Geoff’s going to get challenged in some way, whether he’s being asked to hold a subharmonic F1 for hours, or he’s going to play Ursula (hello-brilliant!), or he’s going to hit that insane low in Halo (B0!!). When Geoff does one, you get a lot of complex chord progressions and layering harmonies, serious “wall of sound,” and he seems to love bringing out that rocker voice in Eli. There’s just so much going on, every time. Oh, and if you’re theater people, pay attention to Eli’s acting. All of these guys are terrific, but Eli has that one in a million ability to transform into his characters. Even when the characters are kind of similar (the berserker Viking in My Mother Told Me vs. the fun-loving Disney villain in Hoist the Colors), his face and body language are entirely different, and then compare them to the “guy next door” character here in Bruno. Great reaction, guys! Can’t wait for the next!

(Beatboxer is Layne, not Lin ). Layne did the arrangement & video on this one. Next time you watch it, watch Layne's face when Geoff morphs and does his Disney Princess thing. I love his madcap sense of humor and comic timing. Really love and appreciate your reactions - they're always so much fun - and Katie is a wonderful add! This would be a step away from Disney and comedy, but strongly recommend both VoicePlay's Dream On and Geoff's cover of Bill Withers' Ain't No Sunshine. Not only are the arrangements and singing glorious, but both bring a really high level of theater into the production without going over the top. The balance of restraint and vulnerability in Ain't No Sunshine is just stunning - that's a difficult tightwire to walk. These guys are incredible musicians, but they're also theater people to the bone.

Love your reaction to this piece and your appreciation of Voiceplay - and Geoff. Voiceplay did a cover of Go the Distance with featured artist EJ Cardona of Voctave. I so enjoy your reactions to VoicePlay and Geoff, thank you! Whether it be Layne or Geoff's arrangement, (Laynes in this case) they are always packed full of wonderful gems to hear and see, it often takes me 2 or 3 listens to really absorb the sometimes obvious, sometimes very subtle things that go into these amazing performances. I so agree with Kate about the lyrics, not the first time listening to a VP/Geoff cover where I was able to understand and enjoy the lyrics for the first time! 🙂👍

Ashley talked Geoff into the costume change. I've heard that he only needed the next size up over Ashley's costume! I knew he was slim...but.

Suuuuuper late to the party here but I'd just like to mention (since it doesn't look like any of the other comments covered it) the "ghost note" you talked about on the really tight harmonies sounds like you're describing an overtone. It only happens when singers are exactly in tune because the frequencies sync perfectly and create an extra resonance in a higher octave. It's how you can wind up hearing more notes than there are people. (And a similar principle to why a group of soldiers or a marching band can't walk in step across a bridge; the vibrations multiply and literally shake the bridge apart.) Some groups even build overtones into the arrangement! The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Chanticleer but I know there are others. There are also some singers who can create overtones *with themselves* which honestly just blows my mind. There are a few videos floating around of Avi Kaplan doing this, and it's also the technique that Adam Chance uses to make the mouth harp/alien sound in Home Free's version of "Man of Constant Sorrow". It happens when a singer's ventricular or "false" vocal folds resonate at exactly half the frequency of the true folds, so the note you hear is one octave lower than the note that's actually being sung. And yes, it's incredibly hard to learn, so Geoff's ability to do it accurately and on command is absolutely bonkers. Physics, y'all!
