I would suggest you watch a RU-vidr called Ronald Finger. He has an 85 and is in the middle of rebuilding it. It was $100.00 and had been sitting since the 90’s.

360 and 390s were famous for worn timing chains. Backfiring through the carb was nearly endless during acceleration of any kind. I had a 68 F100 Ranger with a 390. Always ran, but I couldn't figure out what was going on the the intake backfiring till I sold the truck. Several years later, after working for years in a shop and selling autoparts did I figure out what was going on. Fun video. :)
