We drove our 4runner to Estcourt Station ME, though the North Maine Woods, but will we make it back?

In this video, we make the rarely attempted trip to Estcourt Station ME, the northernmost point of Maine. We travel through the very remote Western North Maine Woods, but with road washouts everywhere, can we make it out before we run out of fuel?

Listening to a southerner confused about the border being open in the north made my day.

That will be an awesome adventure! My advice is to bring extra fuel and never pass a town without getting fuel, and bring bug nets and loose long sleeve clothing and whatever else to combat the mosquitoes. Having a satellite messager is a big piece of mind, too, because you will not have cell service for extended periods. We have a Garmin Inreach and we really like it.

This is how much the times have changed. I'm from Maine and my parents owned a camp in Etscourt Station, we had to drive to Fort Kent, Maine, through Canada, back down to Etscourt and cross back into Maine where our camp was, my father had a key to the gate and we would go through the gate without anyone asking questions. Try doing today and see how fast CBP is on your ass!

Yeah, I am surprised that Americans require so much to get into Canada. I wouldn't think there are many truing to cross the border in a place like that to cause problems. Lol

Please don't leave stickers on places you've been. That's defacing the property and leads to areas being closed to the public. What you drove through in the North Maine woods is private property that is open to public use. Small things like that have led to other areas of private land being closed off to recreational use. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but if everyone that goes through those areas did it, it would make a very noticeable difference. Tread lightly in the areas that haven't been shut down and carry out everything you bring in.

Tip: Use the star pattern to tighten wheel lug nuts. Using a circular pattern can cause distortion problems with wheels and brake rotors. I approve of your use of a torque wrench, though. High marks. Thanks for showing us a part of Maine I've never been to. I'm surprised you never saw a Maine Wardens Service truck, or a U.S. Border Patrol truck. Its wild and beautiful country up there. Winters would be bitter, though. Once you get north of Bangor or east of Ellsworth, Maine gets much quieter, and much more appealing.

Best vacation ever. I always wanted to visit places like this. They some interesting border places. Derby Line, Vermont has the Haskel Free Library. It sits on the U.S.-Canadian border. Also Rue Canusa sits in Stansted, Quebec and Derby Line and it is a literal border road. There is a Richford Slide Road in East Richford, Vermont which goes about an 0.08 mile into Quebec.

We took our 4 runner up to see the abandoned trains got out there phones wouldn't work took wrong turn got into some deep mud dragging the bottom of vehicle through alot of it and nowhere to turn around. Finally got turned around and back to main drag then we just tried to get back to civilization. It can get pretty scary out there with no direction or fuel.

I worked in the "big 40" through the '80s. Worked on the last bridge before Escort. "Wildcat". Never wanted to get close to the border account I usually had a firearm. You could have gotten gas at a us station BUT would have had to entered Canada to get there.

Its actually a fascinating geography anomaly. Those 2 houses you walked past at the end are the only ones fully in the US. The other houses on that street are split between the US and Canada but since your address is based on where your front door is, they are all Canadian citizens. Truly a fascinating area of border weirdness!

A LOT of people up in those parts spoke or still do speak French. And if I was to hazard a guess, not many people bother going up that way unless they are from Quebec or have family in Quebec, which means they speak French. Shame there isn't a English translation... but wicked cool ya got to go that way. Only been as far as the Golden Road beyond Kokadjo. Being from the coast, it was eye opening to how rural we are here.

You really should park much farther off the road. The logging trucks are wider than you think on those narrow roads. They are heavy and can't stop like a car. Parking in the grass is much safer if not as convenient. On the weekends and Friday afternoon are safer for cars. But you never know when a fully loaded logging truck will come down the road. logging truck vs 4runner you will loose every time.

I live in St Agatha Northern Maine, near Fort Kent & Madawaska. The French decendants ( Acadians) that lived in Nova Scotia back in the 1700's were forced to move by the British. Most resettled further up on both sides of the st Johns River and the St Lawrence river. Even on the USA side of the river there are still large proportions of the population that speak French as a first langauge. Although signage etc is in English. Annually there is celebrations for their French heritage & culture etc.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acadians

Why wouldn’t you buy a $50 Garmin or Magellan gps unit? Just in case? So you know where you are.
@loganpartyof4runner
@loganpartyof4runner 3 месяца назад
I do have a nice, older Garmin Colorado handheald unit in the rig. The issue is not usually knowing where you are, or how to get somewhere, but knowing what the current road conditions are with roads that are not traveled on recreationally very often.
