I once lived in a place that had pipes dug eight feet into the ground throughout the foundation of the house, which stayed at a pretty constant 65 or so degrees until supplemental HVAC was needed for exceptionally cold weather (below 0 for a week or more). Dirt is a pretty amazing insulative material. The search term for further research would be geothermal temperature control. Of course, you'd need to check to ensure that the installation of these pipes wouldn't interfere with any other wiring or water utilities, but that shouldn't be a problem for a barn.

I agree when you said the weather reporter hyped the blizzard a bit - but better safe than sorry. 👍 Having lived 15 years in the UP, less than 10 miles from the shore of Lake Superior … I had to giggle a bit at this “blizzard”. 😉

I enjoyed cleaning stalls, shoveling the manure on a trailer, and using the John Deere tractor to take it out to the fields or to a neighbor and shovel it off. It was good exercise and I was alone to think and be in nature. The children pony clubbed and they grew up to have good work ethics and to love all animals. I used a Vermont cart for chores. It was so well balanced and I could easily move a lot of hay, manure, and several bales of straw at a time. Wheel barrels are hard on the back for small people.

Girl... All I can say is WOW! I was amazed at all the work you did ...and all for your lovely horses. Very impressive pushing that humongous wheel barrow lol Your hubby is good help, as well as your husky ! Seeing them all out and playing this morning was fun. Lucky horses for sure. Hi! It was exhausting haha! But I also love taking care of them ❤️. That wheelbarrow does me in every time 😂. I was raised in Illinois, lived there for 20 years, then I lived in various states across the US for 6 years before settling down in Michigan (been here the last 4).

P.s. I love the round bale set-up with the house over it. Back in the day,I had a round hay ring and then put a tarp over it. Round bales are the way to go , as my horse had turnout, but no grass. I just loved watching him munch to his hearts content. But had a pretty good hay belly !

Yes we love our bale barns! They make life so much easier. Thankfully the slow feeder net plus exercise helps them not to engulf to much hay and become obese 😂🤣.

New subscriber binge watching your vlogs. Have you considered extending the roofline and providing a covered outdoor area? When we have to much rain or snow here 🇨🇦 it's helpful to give them space and fresh air. You have a great family there.

I keep my horses out 24/7 I absolutely do not keep them boxed up.

@@freespiritequestrian I haven't seen the entire layout being new. When weather is bad we don't use enclosed arena unless riding. We added an extension between the barns covered but fenced on both sides to be able to move around. We also added an extension to the roofline on one side of the other barn that open but fenced. They can get fresh air and roam around without the weather turning on them. Our climate is similar to yours but more harsh at times. Still, they don't stay boxed up. Ice under the snow is a problem here in paddock.

I read that horses roll in the grass to disguise their scent. Prey animals do that. And wolves do the same to disguise their scent. I don’t know. They just look like it is fun.

If you have running water in your barn and it doesn’t freeze, why not put in automatic water ears and wrap the pipes in heat tape? Do you use hay nets in their stalls and if not, why? I follow a you tuber in Canada that raises sheep ( they are located close to the Lakes ) and she uses automatic waterers with heat tape for the sheep and lambs, she doesn’t have trouble with frozen lines.

Be careful if it is wet snow. The weight on the barn roof could be too much with 20”. My horses would stand behind the barn to break the wind. Paid all that money and they chose to stand in the hail and snow. Go figure.

Whats the difference between the haye you give them from the tack/feeding room and the one that you give them with their grain, salt, water ( sometimes if needed ), and supplements. From An Animal Lover

Because we have round bales stored in there and they would tear up the footing. They aren’t stalled much, I wasn’t worried.

Yes. Horses always need something in their gut though, that’s how their digestive system operates. They are grazer :).

Why do you use salt 🐎

Horses can’t replace salt like we can, they loose up to 30% per day of what their body needs and because they are domesticated they can’t seek out the minerals they need like they do in the wild. Salt and mineral blocks often times to do provide enough. So I add salt to replenish their system and salt also helps to prevent colic.
