Jonas is doing better than what 90% of the cycling analysts had expected. Its great to see this rivalry with Tadej. Remco also has been a surprise this stage.
With all credit to Jonas its still the first week. His lack of preparation due to the crash will be seen in week 2 and 3 more likely that's where he will lose time
As a Dane i will bet all my money on Pogi, but i hope to see a close figth between them both and ofc hope Vingegaard comes out on top.. But without Kuss and such a strong climbing team from UAE i dont see Jonas winning
Rightfully said. These guys are making the Tour exciting. Not even just the Tour but any time they race each other. It's a gift for all of us to watch and I'm cheering for both of them to be in top shape when they meet. Roglic and Evenepoel riding their coat tails also makes it so much more exciting. More battles and respect to all of them
Jonas gonna put 90s on Pogi firing the two individual time trials. Why? Because Pogi spent all his energy in Giro. Science tells us you can’t win Giro and TDF at the same time.
Jonas being Jonas, calmed, collected, understanding that this is a 3 weeks race. His time will come, feels like he will get better as the Grand Tour advances. Poggi went nuclear and gave his all and still only was able to put 50 seconds, that I think says a lot about how strong JVG is. No teammates around him, ,not 100% yet...and still able to keep the pace. But let's enjoy and respect all riders.
Such a polite, honest young man. Always answers questions to the best of his ability. With such difficult preperation he is doing remarkably well. It's going to be a great tour.
Both Pogacar and Jonas are total beasts - Pogacar is fearless and relentless in his attacks. The classiest cyclist I have ever witnessed but I think Jonas' body is a a complete freak of nature thing. If he starts getting more comfortable (without having raced since his crash - in which he broke ribs and lungs - he's still better than everyone else there except Pogacar) we might still have a race in our hands.
I’m a Pogi suporter but i’m so happy that Jonas is showing that he can battle wit Pogi, last thing we want is a Tour identical to the Giro! May this be the greater tour of all time
@@paulamcconahayc21affilated19 And two of the next best -- Remco and Roglic -- in the frame. Remco has been ahead of Jonas from the off. Friday will tell a lot. I'm in the anybody-but-Philipsen camp but he must be tearing his hair out (or possibly someone else's -- it's never his fault) in frustration and may well ride like the devil to prove it.
Depends on how UAE play it. If UAE rides high tempo throughout the Tour's mountains there'll be no time for Vingegaard to ride into form. Expect Pogačar to gain even more time on the time trial.
That UAE team is soooooo strong in climbing. Visma is missing Sepp big time. I’ve never seen them so thoroughly dominated in team tactics. This is truly becoming a fascinating tour to watch. No matter who wins were all winners as fans right now. Best of luck to all the riders 😊
as a slovenian fan of cycling, this is pretty scary to see for me, i didnt expect him to do so well either. at least we have an entertaining tdf as i hoped for, i wish everyone finishes without falls and injuries
No. He is just a very thin guy. Helps him upwards. And doesn't downhill. In the old days some riders were known to add leadfilled bottles to their bikes on the top of the mountains. 10 kilos of lead! In a drinking bottle!
Bahamontes (who was deemed the best climber ever in the Tour of France) would peak half an hour sooner than everyone else and then sit and have a sandwich while he waited for them to catch up again, he was scared shitless of descents :)
It wasn't Jonas that was doing a terrible job downhill, it was Pogacar riding down like a rocket. Look at the other cyclists that followed, they couldn't gain many seconds on Pogacar either, despite them doing up to 90 km/h at some point! Pogacar said he had trained on this downhill previously - and it showed! Great riding from Pogacar, and it paid off for him.
It's just basic psyhics. Pog weighs more than Jonas . I think 8 kgs. And that means a lot on the latter part of the downhill where they were pedalling where you have more help for your weight especially in headwind
@@Nicoztrike according to the UCI, the difference between them is 6kg. And you could say that Pogacar is in disadvantage going uphill because of weight, there was also big headwind today which favored Vingo since he was only sitting on the wheel.
Jonas looked like he might be on the limit or close to on the last half of the decent. He is on good form but not on peak form. Technical descending he was very good. Jonas gets better as the Tour goes though so this could end up very interesting by week 3 if he doesn't lose much time.
@@aftermath9161 draft only favours at higher speeds and since Jonas lost the wheel pretty fast he didn't have the favor of it.. indeed the weight difference is a disadvantage on the long hard climbs . That's also why normally you se Pog Go for the short extremely hard bursts against Jonas. Because that's pogs biggest weapon and one of Jonas weaker points . You never see Pog stack Jonas 6 km out on a long draggy climb . Og yes we did last year about 3ks out and in that case Jon's came back because he is very good at sustainable hard pace whereas Pog is way more explosive
I am a big Pogi fan (well, I am Slovenian) but at the same time I really like Jonas. Hoping for a great battle until the end of tdf, this difference is far from decisive.
Have it the same way mate. Being dane I cheer for Jonas - but Pogi is awesome. No doubt about it. I love his aggressiveness and versatility. We’re lucky that one of them does not exist without the other, since the tour would be so much less fun then.
Translation = I limited my losses best I could. Spectacular effort today nevertheless considering how injured he was only a few months ago. He's a true champion!
So glad to see your form Jonas -- I agree your time will come. We are blessed to have two strong rivals who are also classy sportsmen and fierce competitors.
For Jonas to be the only one being able to follow Tadej, despite having no racing done, it’s exceptional! Not just the physical state but the mental state was also under question. Inspite of it, he’s outperforming everyone except Tadej, which says a lot about his athletic caliber! 👏
I honestly think Visma are okay with how today played out, losing only eight seconds on the climb but this year UAE have three guys as strong as Visma’s best mountain domestique which is a lot scarier
@@kasperrieberg3495 I was referring to today’s climb. Anyway. Let’s see what happens when the roles are reversed v/ two years ago. It is what it is. Roglic wouldn’t stay to play second fiddle (and wants to try for his own TdF crown before hanging up his bike). Visma has had an abysmal season so far with injuries and what happened to Kuss is just piss poor timing. Took UAE a couple of seasons, too, to get the support act together. Again, it is what it is.
What's apparent is UAE have the money and so the best team, especially in the climb. Jonas team couldn't keep up to help him, but considering he's coming back from injury he's giving Tadej a run for his money which is great to see and very entertaining!
Damn, Vingegaard sounds like a master tactician, sticking and executing the plan. If Tadej rides like the Cannibal, Jonas is like Lemond who will go for the kill in the end.
Its worrisome when Jonas said " my time will come" ...he seldom express stromg words let alone he is still tendimg to his injuries...war is coming these weeks....
Jonas is very humble, I think that is why fans are generally ok with him and he is one of the favorite. Pogacar is just too strong and crack the rest of riders on the climb
I dont think he meant it as a dis. More stating that on the long straights pogi would be able to reach higher speeds just by being heavier. Which isn’t wrong either.
@@markotertinek4433 it’s this against the rules? Btw you watched the attack on the stage 5 in tdf 2023, or when he attacked pogi in 2022? How can you say that he just wait for pogi having a bad day? Just because he blowed up last year and he started pushing
Jonas will grow into the race it’s going to be close! Also a huge amount of credit should go to Carlos Rodriguez give him a year or two and he could challenge to win Grand Tours including TDF. Might even steal 3rd place on podium this year
Seriously, no team like Visma enters a stage planning to lose 2' and just basically throw the TdF in the garbage. Superb media training and confidence showed by Jonas.
@Rodcarv: You Don`t throw tdf in the garbage with 2 minutes loss. Vingegaard took 7 minutes on Pogi in the 3rd week of tdf last year. And even if he can`t catch Pogi, he surely Can end up in the podium.
Jonas broke most of his upper body 3 months ago and sustained lung damage. He has only had 6 weeks of proper training and no race riding before the Tour de France while Tadej is on his life's form. Of course Jonas and Visma were expecting him to lose minutes in the first week which is usually Jonas' weakest week.
I think Jonas is using these races as an extended training program as opposed to a purely racing program - it is a change of mindset that builds both fitness but also confidence. Beware Tadej - all is not as it may seem.
He will win easily... He's basicly at the level of pogacar... pogacar is really good at 2min efforts..unbeatable... Jonas will get him on the long steep climbs... It's nuts how good he is after his scary crash, dude was hospitalized for 11 days, 4.5 weeks ago
@@kristofrookx8452 I agree that the high mountains and to add, the final TT specifically, will be Jonas' trump card. He did well to limit his loses today on that downhill
Bla bla.. simply boring answers from him: I do not know where I am ..I am satisfied..I thought I will loose more etc ..so boring! Visma just playing mind games instead of simply racing..
I love Jonas. But... he didn't come to the Tour to run second. He and the team had to think he was in top form and ready to challenge Pogacar. So, he and they are not happy that he's keeping it close. I hope he rides himself into better form and is stronger in week 3, like he usually is. Roglic also tends to get stronger in the last week of Grand Tours. It just may not matter if Tadej has a 5 minute lead by the time they get to the last week. He's just on another level right now.
Yes they did. Their hope is to crack Tadej on a queen stage and gain minutes on him, like the last years. Jonas is looking quite good. Tadej does not have this in the bag at all.
@@flact75 Jonas is going to get stronger, and Tadej might start feeling the Giro. The fact that the gap is still quite small, is a victory for Jonas. Everyone expected Tadej to attack Jonas at the beginning of the tour, and so far, Jonas is holding on very well. The last years, Jonas was a lot better than Tadej. This year, it's quite even, the dynamic could very well shift towards Jonas
It's still very likely that Jonas' form takes a bit more of a plummet later in the race. Look what Jumbo did to Pogi after he missed training with a broken wrist. That form dip will take time.
I'm glad he's got back his form..but he's not the same rider with the same form. ..and I don't think h'll get better as the tour goes. i think it'll be a case of deteriorating as it goes.
:D yes can anyone imagine why they would have expected to lose much time in the first stages? Because of Jonas' form due to the crash? Or it was just supposed to tell the public "everything goes as expected'?
@@fp323 because Jonas's lack of training and the terrain. Pog is punchier on shorter steep climbs, and Jonas does better later in the Tour when they have fatigue and longer climbs
The problem that visma don't really have a climbing team, especially after Kuss has quit the race, seems to be even a bigger problem than Jonas is in ICU just 3 months ago. (Well, I mean, normal human beings suffering from such crash is probably still on their beds)
