Bought a blantons store pick yesterday for $68.. the store owner who did the store pick passed recently and the store manager and I got close thur bourbon so she saved me a bottle cause in her words as she teared up he would want me to have it. That hit hard! So connect with people and enjoy the moments 🥃
I do not like regular woodford reserve and so I never wanted to even try the double oaked until I watched one of your episodes a while back. You guys really enjoyed it. I reluctantly bought a bottle and it is now one of my favorites!!!
You guys often apologize for loosing track of who gives you what bottles. I have the same problem with bottles people give to me. I have started marking gift bottles with a piece of blue masking tape with the person's name and the date they gave me the bottle written on it. That way, I think of the generous person everytime I pour from a gifted bottle. It also has the added benefit for wine bottles (since I am not really a wine person) that I can predict how good a particular bottle may be by knowing the person who gave it to me and how into wine they are. A small label placed inconspiculously on the bottom of your bottles would let you know at a glance who (and when) you received the bottle from, without having to dig into your records. Keep up the great videos and thanks for continuing to expand my bourbon knowledge and appreciation!
Just opened my bottle of WRDO. Never disappoints. Dark color, definitely butterscotch notes and marshmallow not a bad finish. Easy drinking. It’s been awhile, I actually think I’m going to go back to the store and pick up another. Nice summertime bourbon. Another enjoyable episode. Thanks for sharing.
It’s great to see you being a great father and son and having so much fun together. I watch these videos to stockpile bottles to taste with my sons one day. Keep up the great work!
Always fun doing side by sides! Just did the same with WRDO PS vs shelf… It’s not surprising that ya’ll were confused given that the PS program only allows you to select from three different blended profiles! All the laughing was great. Good to see you guys having such a good time.
One of my favorite episodes 😂 Really enjoyed this one. I went to the store today and got a rum and a tequila that I had been wanting to get. I actually stood there looking at a Woodford Reserve DO and said I would get one later. Emptied the one I did have. And then I was sitting here earlier this afternoon wondering what was I gonna sip on tonight and watched this video and really wished that I had of got the WRDO now. I have some of the regular WR but not the double oak. But might give it a try tonight. Thanks again for the video👍👍
Great idea for a show, I have never seen anyone else do multiple Woodford Reserve Double Oaked store picks vs the shelf, if you can ever do that with other brands that would be interesting too. WRDO is my #1 favorite so it's tough to expect a store pick to improve on what I think is already just right, and as with all picks it's entirely dependent on the person doing the picking.
I picked one of these up from total wine and it's a unique pour that I enjoy after a savory dish. It's sweet and delicious. It's got the butterscotch thing but with a touch of maple and marshmallow.
I know it’s a bit south from you guys. But if you are ever near Indianapolis, please swing by Capri. It is an Italian restaurant that does store picks and they have the most amazing woodford DO picks (one is butterscotch and another is green apple). Let’s not forget the amazing Italian food!
we can definitely tell the generation difference. Kurt says he doesn't have a paper and pencil to write it down. Trent says I need to "write" it down and grabs his phone. Don't worry Kurt, I'm with you on "writing" things down. Actually I'm older. Great show, keep them coming. TonyB
I think maybe I mixed my glasses up when I poured the Beer world pick next to the shelf doubled oak 😂. Thanks Kurt for the new terminology by the way. I thought the normal Woodford was stronger and the beer world pick was diluted tasting but I didn’t keep track which glass was which when I sampled and it possible I swapped them and didn’t notice. I’ll do another comparison this weekend.
Good review, as always. WRDO store picks have been hit or miss for me and normally the standard offering is as good or better than the picks I've had. Big fan of the Old Forrester 1910, too.
LMAO! No women in the basement tonight, getting the most excellent BBB stuff, just the guys yapping about Woodford. Having a blast watching this. Thank you both! The ladies will never leave you unattended again 😊
Honestly gentlemen that is not a fail at all!!! What it is, is something we as whiskey drinkers hope to always run into. Actual store picks that are better than the original!! This was aweaome to see as I love WDO!! Now I gta find a store pick!!
This was one of the best. Show went off the rails towards the end and I just couldn’t stop laughing. I lost it when Kurt said he’s young. Oh that Morning Wood Double Oaked. Brings out the best.
“He’s young” 😂 I’ve just started back with an actual collection and I bought a bottle of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked specifically off of y’all’s reactions to it and tasting notes of pancakes and syrup. Man is it good!
Curt, you mentioned that you weren’t sure about the aging. I didn’t get a full response from Woodford but they did send me this. Our Woodford Reserve Bourbon is aged an additional 8 to 12 months in a heavily toasted lightly char barrel before batching and bottling.
2:19 "I need to start drinkin' right now." 😂 Try saying "Woodford Reserve Double Oaked" three times fast. 🙂 I like Woodford Reserve, and the Double Oaked is fantastic. Unfortunately I can only afford a pint of the Double Oaked at a time - especially right now, after spending money I didn't really have on a Knob Creek store pick. 🙂
Ideas for your next show take for high-proof Bourbons that hide the flavors on the nose because of the high alcohol content light him up let him flameout does that change them
One of the major liquor retailers in my area has a corporate policy that their employees cannot taste when they are picking, smell only.. Their picks definitely suffer from that short sighted corporate mentality.
Oh my gosh!!, you guys are a hoot!! Can’t wait for more content. Having had the regular and a store pick as well I guessed wrong one along with you guys. What a fun video!!
My Brother picked me up a bottle, at the distillery. It was amazing, super complex and delicious. I've yet to buy an off the shelf bottle, that is half as good. 😢😭
Since this is my favorite bourbon, I’ve tried a few store picks, only to determine they add nothing to the standard bottle but price markup. And really, what does a store pick even mean in the case of Woodford DO? It’s aged in one barrel, then blended with other barrels and finished in a second barrel (the pick being the second barrel).
I'm starting to think that store picks are just an excuse to charge more money. However, I got an Eagle rare store pick that is delicious but that made it a single barrel as ER is made by blending with other barrels. That's the only bourbon store pick that I will buy these days.
This is my feeling on Woodford Reserve Double Oaked as my #1 favorite, if it ain't broke don't fix it. But with an Eagle Rare I would be glad to get more store picks.
The biggest challenge I see with Cask strength or higher proof is the burn. I am not talking about first sip, I am speaking to 2nd pour. I can see , if it's the first pour of the day, some heat, but when you go for the 2nd pour if heat exceeds flavor, you've missed the mark.
Since DO is twice barreled and blended to a very consistent form before it goes into barrel #2, i can see why a DO store pick means very little (except $10 more a bottle) on this one.
In my experience, there can be a good bit of variance if you get a good pick... Last year, Charlotte Bourbon Society got to pick 3 barrels simultaneously, and I purchased bottles from 2 of the 3. One just tastes like a slightly amped-up standard Double Oaked (which is kind of what I expected), but the other was dramatically different, with some very pronounced cherry and chocolate notes. I describe it as "drinking an Old Fashioned with a bite of chocolate." I ended up buying a backup of that one, it was so good. But whether that difference happened in the first or second barreling stage, I don't have a clue; I have had regular WR store picks that were dramatically different too.
@@LeeDempsey I haven't been lucky enough to get a DO store pick so good info. There is always going to be variance from bottle to bottle even of the regular stuff, maybe I'll eventually find a store pick of DO and find out for myself.
A few months ago I tried Cooper's Craft 100 proof chiseled & charred. I can not tell the difference from Woodford double oaked. I wonder whether either of you could distinguish which was which in a blind taste test.
I've never had the double oaked before how different is it from the normal woodford reserve. Normal is slightly sweet hint of peanut with a quickly vanishing finish for me. I find it incredibly smooth and easy to drink but very thin and lacking in flavor.
Yup, it's official. I'm calling this Squidward's Reserve from now on. Can't wait to go into the liquor store and ask the clerk if they have any squidward reserve.
Aren't pick meant to be better then the shelf which is why they cost so much more? So by picking the shlef bottle last yall picked out the shelfer correctly?
