From an experienced discord server owner: should you ever create a new discord server, when raids happen LOCK THE SERVER DOWN. Do not allow new people in for at least a week. Add a cool down for how many messages a user can send a second. Make sure that only admins have admin rights-- no one can create threads/channels without mod/admin permissions. Add a bot that logs EVERY ACTION DONE BY EVERY USER and add several moderator bots that delete messages with banned words. Your server should be a walled garden to protect its inhabitants if you want to help anyone with it. You can let people in, but only once raiders have calmed down. You will always have raiders, just remember to shut the server invites off when they happen and ban anyone who raids, even if their account was hijacked.

You may have underestimated the work of managing a discord server. And that is a hard lesson that I myself had to learn. But there are things in life that sadly is outside our control. And to me it really sounds like that your situation got to that point. So I think you made the right choice professor. I am really proud of the passion you show to your cause. Such a shame.. I am involved in the Discord and the people there are very helpful. I'm not really active a lot so sorry. People suck... I am glad the student is better but I can't believe someone would do that. And I've met people who told me to kms. It's heartbreaking and I really wish these people didn't do that. It's so damaging. And hey. Don't listen to those types people. If someone demands you do something for them and not even show manners, then don't even listen to them. To those who want to create a community server that might be a bit controversial (mental health, gay, etc) 1) CHECK THE INVITES REGULARLY!! People can easily create invites unless you either have invites off or if you don't let them create an invite. 2) Verification. Create an extensive verification, some trolls don't wanna spend too much time like that. 3) Roles. Make roles that limit people. 4) Slowmode. This makes it so you can only send one message within an allotted amount of time. As a Discord moderator myself, I feel your pain. I have encountered far too many ignorant people, hateful groups, and flat-out trolls to count; my ban hammer is worn out and my faith in humanity threatens to fade. It gets tiring as hell, even with other mods working shifts in my stead + trying to keep _themselves_ in line too. Chaos is still kinda fun sometimes! I'm so sorry this had to happen to you, even more so in knowing how hard you guys tried. Everything is built upon a key stone. In this case, the key stone of this chaos was discord. We’re not mad at you. We are mad at the homophobes and at discord. You did your best but is is important to remember that your well being also matters. I am cirtan that this will all work out in the end. And We are thankfull that you care so much and work so hard.

This is why I never trust Discord servers.. Heck, I was attacked, not by homophobes, but PC people as a homophobic and transphobic person, simplify because I accidentally called someone the wrong pronoun, not knowing they were non-binary. Even though I've stated I was bisexual and corrected myself by calling them with their appropriate pronouns, they tried cancelling me for being someone I was not and even forging fake screenshots of me being homophobic. Thankfully their bad behavior was called out, but my god, it makes you realize that Discord is never safe, even on a server that supposingly supports LGBTQ rights. I can only imagine how much of a nightmare it is for you guys to run a safe place and have it constantly trashed with people who are begging to have a death count. But I can tell, you guys are doing what you can to handle with the problem. It's not perfect, but the effort to improve and make your platform a safe place for the LGBTQ is really admirable.

I’m so sorry this happened, you worked so hard. And although I was not in the server, I sincerely appreciate the work you put in this project. But although discord can be *Chaos* x10, it’s all about finding the right people! I’ve been on discord for years and I found so many friends! And yeah there’s always gunna be bad apples, And trust me I’ve met a few- But finding your people is so worth it. If you ever attempt discord again, I suggest adding everything before you send the link out to public. There’s also ways to make it so they have to be subscribed here to chat in certain channels! (Such as therapist help, ex.)

i totally understand shutting down a discord server! I was apart of a few servers that got so crazy toxic that I left those channels, and even got some of the mods to curse me out for it. If you don't want to open up a community channel, clearly it needs to be changed! I hope the youtube chat works!

As a trans person, I recently watched one of your videos, in which you said that "there is no room for hate on this channel and hate comments will be removed and user banned", this alone made me feel so safe. I have been attacked on other trans YT channels by the transphobes and seen others attacked, but knowing how you and your team will work to prevent hate and the attacks was like breath of fresh air. Don't ever feel like you have failed, because there is nothing more certain - you have not failed. Thank you to you and your team for all the hard work you put in to helping our LGBT community. Why The Hell Do People Feel That They Need To Hate A Certain Group Of People So Much That They Need To Do This Shit??!!

I have only found out this channel recently, so I didn't even know you had a Discord server. But let me tell you something as someone who's been a "captain" just like you. Ships go down. And it doesn't matter when it does happen, you just have to wait for it. Especially when talking of online communities. I've had many communities (on Amino, a pretty toxic social), and I've shutted down all of them, because I couldn't handle them anymore. When that happend, I've seen it as a death, not as a failure. Here's why: my work, as a moderator and as a leader, has helped a lot of people to find a safe space to talk about themselves, to express their creativity and also to learn how to do my same job. And as I've gifted all these people with the opportunity of living the Internet as it should be lived, I also gained support (also emotional), friends, trusted coworkers, experience, life lessons and the will to be a moderator once again. As you can see, only good things have been exchanged in the human relationships that happen to be in an online community, even between moderators and simple members. Have my communities been attacked by raiders? Which doesn't? Of course that will happen. But that's just one of the infinite causes that can lead your community to be corrupted. Just like a human being gets ill. And when that human dies, the ones still alive should only think about what that person gifted to the world. So, when you think "We have failed" ask yourselves: how many people did you help? How many will you keep helping? Did you really think everything would have gone perfectly? I'll end with a personal thought: Learn by every single bad situation you encounter, and next time maybe you won't know what to do, but surely you'll know what not to do. This is what moderation and community leading is about. Be proud of what you've created, even when it gets destroyed. ❤

I was a Homofob when I was 15. Later i realized that homofobs have little to none education about LGBT+ and homofobs like to discriminate against LGBT+. Seeing this i switch to LGBT+ i'm 21 pansexual now i feel better like i did something right with my life.

Same thing happened in a server I moderate in. We closed invites for a while and only just opened them up and so far it is has been good. I also recommend putting in rules about being polite or there will be consequences and to respect moderators, owners and eachother. We had bots coming in a raiding, until someone joined saying “Wait.. you’re the people that banned all my bots!” The banning was glitched that day so we annoyed him by ignoring and deleting his messages until he left. Please understand that this is not your fault, you didn’t do anything wrong.

I will never come to terms with the fact that some people would rather destroy fellow human beings than see us simply exist as lgbt+ people. I'm so sorry that all you've been doing has been met with both such evil and such indifference.

Discord is a hit or miss. I’m lucky to be in friendly communities where there isn’t any toxicity, but I know it happens. I have a server, and i’ve had probably grown-ass men join just to say slurs, post porn, and leave. Honestly I don’t understand what goes through people’s heads.

Thank you for sharing this. At the end of the day we are all human. I just saw a new video of a video place I used to work at and even tho part of me felt like I failed. I never came out to them when I discovered I was trans and started identifying differently. Being trans is in no way a failure. Seeing that they had advanced so much while I was gone without me made me feel like a failure. Quite honestly I kind of missed working there but life is different now. You just reminded me that everyone is human and that its ok if I mess up sometimes as long as we keep moving forward.

The closed captions are totally wrong, doesn't seem like the algorithm can be that ignorant but maybe it's because it's LGBT+ some homophobe could have skewed the CC. Had to turn on the sound cause I'm at work

For one I think you did great and Discord is just a mess in my opinion. I have a friend who works full time, 8 hrs a day, at a game company and for those 8 hrs all they do is manage one of the game’s discord channels along with another moderator. There is a way to make discord approve only for new members but by doing that it would deny access to folks who really need it. Plus who would know the person coming in is a bad apple or not. All in all I think you did great and I am so happy this channel exists. Discord is a mess and none of this is your fault. Honestly tho the new RU-vid video chat idea is the most brilliant thing I have ever heard of!

from an experianced owner/admin and modorator on Discord I can tell you that I have delt with similar raids, but this was a gaming community. In your case there is a sulution that could help, having discord filter bots, you can make these bots delete certain word as soon as they come and/or ban/kick a person for it after they have broken those rules 2 or 3 times. This for me helped greatly since staff did not have to think about indiviual people that were bad apples.

i used to own a discord server that was based around furry stuff cus i was a furry back then but i deleted it after a while cus it was dead and the only time it was active was when haters started raiding our server again. so there was just no point of keeping it.

First of all please quit saying you failed. You learned from it therefore it wasn't a failure it was a learning experience. They came at you with everything they had and you still overcome. Be proud of yourself and think of all the people you've helped. I don't see that as a failure and the rest of us don't either.

Honestly, my advice would be to add bots to the server (if you haven't already) and learn to use the private voice channel, for the bots, you need to make sure one/two of them can filter out and ban people depending if they say anything inappropiate. And if you can try and make the server private. The other bots can be used for some fun things. I'm sorry you had to go through such pain, those homophobes should just burn in hell tbh.

discord can be a really good platform, but you definitely want to put some folks in charge who really know how to use it.
