We Find a MAJOR Problem when We Replace our Anchor Chain - Episode 55

In this episode, we sail to Coco Banderas in the San Blas Islands, Panama. We have a lovely time freediving and spearfishing but decide it is finally time to change our anchor chain. We decide to sail to a more shallow anchorage to swap the chain. As we begin to remove our old chain however, we notice quite the problem. Boat life certainly isn't easy.

Great job on the anchor chain change out. In all my days of mechanical work in the Navy and even since then, I've learned that for alot of mechanical and marine jobs, all you can do is adapt and be flexible and do the best you can at the moment. Those temp patches will probably be good for longer than a person realizes. I love seeing your mechanical skills and troubleshooting on the fly and of course, Brook's input is thoroughly enjoyable as well. I'm trying to catch up to your present videos but, I don't want to skip ahead. I'm thoroughly enjoying your journey. You two are incredible at doing this !

Love your videos, keep up the great work. Bummer about the bulkhead rot. When you’re marking your anchor chain, use various colors to be able to tell how much you have out…the general sailor’s color code to make it easy to remember is Red, Yellow, Blue, White and Green (Rub your balls with grease) 😊 Fair winds

Gooood morning One Life. Great episode. I like your temporary repair of the rope anchor point. Nice that someone in the cruising community had the fiberglass panel. Just what you needed 👍. I too am enjoying the relaxation that your underwater video brings. A little reprieve from the anxiety that sudden change of plans can cause when that change is a “must fix now” problem. Zip ties are a handyman’s friend for sure when it comes to chain marking as well as many other uses. Definitely a must in the armamentarium of your tool box. As Brooke said, if there is one fault, there is bound to be more of the same. It would be wise to check every through-deck and into-deck fitting is properly seated with some form of sealing compound to ensure they're waterproof and that rot has not compromised the integrity of the hull. And you just know your (electronic) self-steering gear is bound to break down again. Is it possible to install a self-steering mechanical wind vane on a yacht the size and displacement of 'One Life"?
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife Год назад
Hi Charles! Yes, exactly right about checking all our deck fittings. You will see in a future video where we tear out our rotten bulkhead (we are currently in the middle of this project). We would absolutely love a wind vane and we have considered one. Our issue is we do not have clearance to add one with our current dinghy davit system.....and well also they are pretty pricey! Maybe one day!

From the position of the hatch it looks like water on the bows has also run down on top of the bulkhead and cleat. .. It seems glassed so far up then stops. ... It could have done with being glassed over the top edge and down onto the glasswork then sealing. When you fix it I'd beef up that fixing point and carry across the width of it.. Offer your old chain to a local they might use as ballast or to create something useful on land or knotted up as a mooring Spot wt. Steels/iron isn't a problem in sea water though fresh Zinc is slightly.
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 2 года назад
Hey Clive! Yeah there is definitely water that runs down that hatch especially when we take waves over the bow. We definitely need to beef up that bulkhead when we do the repair. We loaded the chain back in the container to give to someone along the way! Hope you have a great 2022! 🥂

@@SailingOneLife Rain water and freshwater from a washdown is reckoned to a greater risk of causing wood rot than salt water. 🤔 Unless it was designed to fail without causing anything more than local damage to that small bulkhead.. have a look and a think, just incase if you over rebuild and transfer the fail point to say the actual hull material.

I also appreciate the species ID when shooting underwater. Can you describe how easy/difficult it was to get food from the sea in the different areas you have cruised? Like, this was plentiful in the Bahamas, etc.?
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 2 года назад
Thanks Coach! Spearfishing and rod and reel fishing was some of the best we've experienced in the Bahamas. Our freezer was always stocked on lobster, conch and fish. St. Thomas in USVI was pretty decent for spearfishing as well. Fishing in Puerto Rico was pretty good as well. Lots of mahi around. Alot of the other places we've visited Grenada, St Lucia, SVG, Antigua and Barbuda big fish and lobster were a bit scarce. Always able to get a couple lionfish though. In Statia and Saba the marine life is protected so no hunting there. In Curacao tourists are only able to pole spear lionfish .... So we loaded up on those. Colombia we didn't do much spearfishing but we did fish on our passage there and it was epic....mahi and tuna for days. We've had lots of luck in San Blas as well so we've been eating pretty good out here! Does that answer your question?

Given the nature of the bulkhead repair I might have a suggestion. You can likely repair it if the majority of the lower bulkhead is good. Sistering! No I'm not talking about a few extra wives from Utah. I'm talking about putting another piece of wood...or starboard up alongside the bulkhead. Pattern out another bulkhead piece or two...onto Starboard. Figure out where there is likely good wood to drill holes in your existing bulkhead. Transfer this information to the new bulkhead. Then drill through the new piece taped to the old piece. Then "drill fill drill "the old piece so that there is epoxy sealing the old part of the bulkhead. Then using stainless bolts bolt the new sistered piece to the old bulkhead. It looks like just the top of the bulkhead is really bad so this method will likely give you a stronger bulkhead more resistant to the chain and moisture.
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 2 года назад
Ah thanks for this, Allyn. Definitely a good recommendation. We certainly hope it's not rotten all the way down but we are suspect. We didn't want to bang around too much on it just yet. Hoping we can hold out for a few more months before having to haul out. Our bulkhead that our staysail chain plate is attached to has a rotten spot as well. Something like you suggested may work for that fix too. Ah boat life! Oh well.....here's to 2022! 🥂

@@SailingOneLife Even if it is rotten all the way down, in the middle, leaving good core next to the tabbing where it attaches to the hull Sistering might work.
