After finding the Honda Magna abandoned and fixing it for only $83 we are taking it to the dyno to see how much power it makes.
We bought the cheapest bike at the auction for only $200!

Love this video seeing one of these older beauties come back from the dead! My first street bike was an 84 V65. I still wish I had that bike...it was bad ass! Rode the shit outta that thing...learned a lot of great lessons and really lucky to be alive lol. My pops cosigned a loan to get it 3 months before I graduated high school....he didn't see what he was cosigning for. When I pulled into the garage next to his Harley low rider his comment was, "Jeeezuz!! If I would have seen THAT thing I would NOT have let you get it!" lol About a year and a half later he nearly died on his new 90 Fatboy Grey Ghost...lost his left leg at the hip running into a farm truck out on a poker run in the middle of Wyoming. Blessed to still have him in this world at 73 years old :) I digress....Honda Magna's....still relevant bikes to this day!

My first bike was also an '84 V65 Magna. I too wish I still had that bike. I loved it! The fastest I was ever able to make it go was just shy of 150 mph with my fat butt sitting on it. That was also in the Denver area at 5300'+ elevation. Since then I've owned a '98 Fat Boy that wound up being stolen from me 12 years ago by a "friend." I've waited a long time to get my 3rd bike which I just purchased about a month ago. A beautiful 2006 Electra Glide Standard. The guy I bought it from had every single receipt and all maintenance records as well as upgraded S&S cams and exhaust pipes. Every oil change he's ever done on it was with Amsoil. Its cherry.

Hi from across the pond. Some years ago I took one of those out on a test ride which done exactly what yours done at the end of this video, it turned out to be a fuel filter. As the shop didn't stock one, I flushed it through with carb cleaner in the reverse direction, this shifted loads of muck out. This was done as a temporary measure whilst a replacement filter was ordered. This hack cured his fault and bought him time till its next service when I replaced the filter.

Sitting in a bar with some friends, when someone said that it was starting to rain....well, rain at 30 degrees freezes as soon as it hits the ground, or your bike. It was 36 miles of freezing rain on my '05 Softtail. between 15-20 mph the whole way, using a borrowed bar towel to wipe my goggles every 2-3 minutes. I actually thought about stopping at a filling station to get under the awning but figured that since I was already soaked, frozen and suffering to just push it all the way home. I'm in my 70's and have been riding since 1967, and this was probably the worst ride of my life. If I ever found myself in that kind of situation again, I think I would try to leave my bike in the bar and get a ride in a car....

I own a Honda CG125 for more than 5 years now, and I often find myself in that situation when monsoon season starts here in the Philippines. Usually, the situation begins when I am away from home and then rain suddenly pours down hard. I have to brave it because it takes a lot more time for me to get in my rain gear than simply wearing a helmet and chucking the contents of my pockets into my top box. But that's also how I learned how to survive a wet road, paved or not.

Take it out every now and then. While it isn't Sportbike fast, I reckon it would keep up with most any Harleys. Its truly amazing the reactions you get out of some people with that bike too. Had that exact bike, same color in pristine condition with only 8k miles 4 years ago. I got it In crank - no start condition.. I added a large amount of sea foam into new fuel after draining the old from the tank! After a couple battery charges from cranking and cranking I finally got some spit and sputters that turned into running for 5 seconds and dying then firing right back up and dying... let it sit over night came out the next day hit the choke and it fired up and idled great! Riding was a different story because it would want to bog down as soon as you would start letting off the clutch and want to die, I had to flint stone it a bit to get it to take off on its own! After riding around the block a few times and reaming on it “(slow rpm pull) like you had going on in the video” it started to finally wake up and clear out more and more! After 2 days that bike went from not running to running crappy to running great all due to 1 can of SeaFoam! I now run that crap in every bike I own every fuel up! It’s proved itself to me! If you have not used it.. which I’m sure you have, go on and throw some in the tank!

I really enjoyed this episode. I don't know if you remember, but I picked up an '82 Yamaha Virago 920 last summer. I got a good vibe from the guy, he had trouble with the carbs which I found is most likely from over spraying paint inside the tank. There were pieces of paint flaking off in side. He gave me an extra tank which had the same problem. I haven't had time to work on the bike because I've been working on 2 apartments. The 1st to get ready for the people in the other apartment to move into and now finally finishing up the 2nd for me. It's amazing how some tenants can screw up an apartment. Every door needed some kind of work. Paint had been spilled on one carpet and just left. Luckily I was able to get most of the paint out using paint remover. Also, in my apartment there is an entry room outside the apartment where I Will hopefully work on the bike. Only problem is its on the 2nd floor but where there's a will there's a way and the landlord, a good friend, actually suggested moving it up there as he is a long time bike rider and has a 2003 anniversary decked out Harley. I learned a lot watching the guys working on your carbs, luckily I only have 2 with an extra set. Thanks for sharing.

Engine sounds smooth and I think once you check your fuel pressure, clean carbs (posible rebuild) , check vacuum lines, tune up, hopefully you'll pin point it assuming it's not electrical. I'd start with some simple basics you could perform in the shop like squirting water on the head pipes, voltage reading and fuel pressure test. I'm betting it's fuel related, most likely the pressure regulator. Pulling the slides will give it more hp without extra fuel, it'll just be running super lean when you do that if it's fuel related but anyway super cool bike.

I bought, fixed and rode my first road bike that was an 83 v65 magna. It was cut up, so I made it my own. Not a bad bike. Pulls hard when they run good. The slides not opening all the way could be some varnish on them making them want to stick, an air leak on the top side (near the cap) stopping it from building enough vacuum to pull the slide up, or a plugged passage in the carbs.

A friend had a V-65 Magna back in the late 80s. He went on a few cross country trips on it but always had problems. As I recall, there was some inherent problem with the V-65s internal lubrication system which caused excessive cam lobe and piston ring wear which led to poor valve performance and compression loss. Probably any hi-mileage V-65 will suffer from these same defects. I'm not sure if these same problems were issues with the V-45s

Once, at the beginning of winter, like those days that start kinda hot, but at night gets really cold I went out to meet a friend at a bar. We stayed for a couple of hours, I had a glass of wine and when we said our goodbyes it was like 37°F outside... I had left my house wearing light gloves, an autumn jacket, nothing that could really prepare me for the 30km ride back home at midnight haha! I soldiered on, but when I got in the garage I couldn't open my hands nor feel my fingers. Took me some minutes breathing hot air in my hands to get them to work. And being honest, this is what makes motorcycling so good. Sometimes you just prove yourself that you can endure a bit of rain, cold, or whatever else nature's got on you just so you can have that nice feeling when you reach your destination.

I had an '83 Honda Magna at one time, but it was the V65 VF1100 version. I bought it in 2012 from a guy that said it belonged to his dad before he passed away from cancer. Maybe, but a few miles down the road it began to overheat, so I shut it down and threw it in the back of my truck. When I got it home I took a closer look and found that the cooling fan was not kicking in when the coolant temp rose to the proper temp. Eventually, I just rigged a switch and manually activated the fan when the temp got up a bit and that worked like a charm. Then I got the tires replaced and fixed a few other small items and took it out for a spin. Worked very well and very very fast! I never did get the speedo to work, so I just mounted my smartphone to the bars and used that. I used it to commute 35 each way in Southern California traffic for a couple of years. I did eventually give it up, but I remember one time having my son follow me in his Audi Quatro and he clocked me at 130 before he backed off. I estimate I got up to at least 145mph. I sold it eventually. Biggest and fastest bike I've ever owned. First shaft drive bike as well - that took a small amount of getting used to.

Too easy... See those big circle things on the top of the carbs. Underneath there are rubber diaphrams that are probably dryrotted and cracked. This is very common when your slides aren't fully opening, unless your bike isn't getting enough air through the filter which I highly doubt.

thats why i absolutely HATE diaphram carbs!
@polly_sacharride
@polly_sacharride 4 года назад
I'd bet it's the tiny air inlet to the top side of the diaphragm that's supposed to equalize pressure between there and the main body of the carb. If it's plugged the carb will have to fight against increasing pressure the further the slide moves up. Either that or the caps aren't installed in the right orientation. Which will have the exact same effect as that air inlet being plugged. I found out just how easy that is to do while rebuilding the carbs on my own '83 V65.

Bikes that sit THAT long, usually can do with a carburettor rebuild. Old fuel that sits in the carb fuel veins gets all gummy like enamel, which also clogs jets. I wouldn't be surprised if some of that loss of power was from partially blocked jets caused by 13 yr old fuel enamel. Slide needles also get their profile eroded over time, which will also affect the slide lift rate... so the needles could do with replacing too. Other than that, very cool to see these beautiful old Honda v-fours still getting around 👌 Wishing you and yours remain healthy and happy best you can during these challenging times 🙏

I'm currently in the process of getting my first bike, an 82 V45 Magna back on the road,. It's been a frustrating project without any help or prior older vehicle/any motorcycle knowledge to back me up but I'm getting there. I work on newer cars, it doesn't really translate. So far I've rebuilt the carbs, I've identified a bad stator, put a new battery in it, did a lot of tests to try to find anything that isn't working correctly, and our first test ride it was hanging at 5500 RMP like in the video. It also required 4k revs and gently feathering the clutch in and out in order to even start moving or it'd stall pretty quick. Hasn't been on the road in a month or so, and air/fuel mixture screw actually vibrated out and caused a no-start. Found the valves were way too tight and am adjusting them right now, then I need to remove the other 3 screws and add the o-rings I forgot to put in them, aka why they were loose enough to come out. Here's hoping I have it running good in the next week or so!
