Hiking an eleven mile trail we ventured off five hundred feet and found a crashed airplane in the Arkansas forest. This is the plane crash from 1973. A turboprop plane flying from Eldorado, Arkansas to Texarkana took a detour because of a storm. The pilot became disoriented and the plane went down. After that we drove to Mena to get some dinner at The Ouahitas.

I have visited a crash site in the Smoky Mountains. I felt the same as you did, Cody. Realizing that people died at the site becomes humbling. I felt that same way at the 911 Memorial. These sites become sacred ground.

Convair CV-600, converted from piston engine to Rolls Royce Dart engines with four bladed props in 1965. It took three days to find the wreck and three in a helicopter died during the search. Pilot error in the Convair. Took off at night, not on an Instrument flight plan. Co-pilot was flying while captain directed him to descend to 2000'. Copilot questioned enroute minimum altitude. Pilot checked his charts and told him, "We should be at forty four hun*. And that is when the cockpit voice recorder cut off. They were a lot farther North than searchers thought they would be.

Thank you for taking us along on that hike to sacred ground and for expressing the importance of the lives lost even though in was nearly 50 years ago. The army lost 3 colonels that night. My friend lost her dad. He was one of the 8 passengers and only 39 years old. That crash changed the lives of many people. To further compound the tragedy, they couldn’t find the crash site. It took 3 days to find the first 8 bodies. September will mark 50 years.

Using I. R. Wayright’s post and finding it in Wikipedia: September 27, 1973: Texas International Airlines Flight 655, a CV-600, crashed into a mountain at night time near Mena, Arkansas, killing all 11 on board in the deadliest (and only fatal) accident involving the Convair 600. A probe blamed the captain for not using all the navigation aids available to him and deviating from the preplanned route.

That was bear scat next to the salamander. Speaking from my Alaska experiences, Cody, would it hurt to pack a mossburg 500 pump with slugs and or buckshot. They're affordable and you can throw it over your shoulder with the sling going across your chest. Or just carry it with safty on and none in the barrel. Springtime, when the black bear moms are coming out of the dens with littles can get surprised and attack first with questions later. Something to think about. The Talimena scenic byway runs from Mena ro Talahina with lots of hills and no traffic. Beautiful for bike riding. I don’t want to mention one of our favorite campgrounds is along that byway, but it’s initials are Winding Stair! We we there last weekend camping and riding bikes when that big storm came thru.

That was quite a hike. When you said you were trying to find a plane crash, I got sad just hearing it and I would not have gone. Places like that affect me deeply with an immense sadness. I'm glad you expressed your feelings once you got there. Yes, those steep downhills are tough on the body, especially when its off trail. That pizza looked fabulous. Now I'm hungry for balsamic chicken pizza!!!

When I was in the military we used dog or cat tick and flea collars to put around the top of our boots, so ticks wouldn’t crawl up the pants. Works well for sand fleas in SC and other beaches. In cold weather, put on pantyhose, yes, the Army men where pantyhose in the winter to stay warm. It creates a air layer between the skin and cotton layer. Try it!

We have a B52 crash site here in Maine, It crashed in the winter of 1963( the year I was born) it's a memorial site. The site you hiked to, looks so much like it. Thank you for taking us along.

On Philmont scout ranch there is a plane crash from back during WWII. We hiked up there with the scouts and they all stood on the wing and "Pee'd off. The pictures taken (on purpose) make one think it was in the air, seeing the mountains in the distance. On the way up I was wondered why there were still parts there. But as I found out. wheels and engines weigh too much for people to carry them off. Interesting day hike.

I first came to El Dorado in 1977, people were still talking about the crash. I didn't know it was off a hiking trail though. My wife and I have it on our list for the fall, it's past hiking season for us now, too many biting bugs and ticks! We switch to catching bass and tennis this time of year, or drive out west or up north to find cooler climes.

It's called spatial disorientation. It happens when flying in conditions where ground reference isn't visible, such as in the clouds. VFR flight into IMC is a big killer in aviation. .

I hiked up to the plane crash not long after it happened, sad, the last part of the recorder was co pilot saying the minimum altitude is 2600 feet, then silence as they met the mountain. I have also hiked the Black Fork Mountain trail another time and spent some time cleaning out an old spring.

The crash site should have some sort of memorial erected there to pay respects to those lost. As a genealogist, it would be nice to document the lives lost. I saw some other RU-vid videos of this crash from 2018 and I'm shocked and proud that folks haven't vandalized things.

I think the idea is to TRY to spook the bears. It did look like bear scat. That plane really made a hard landing. There are crashes like that all over California because of all the military bases during WWII where you have inexperienced pilots, no radar and very high mountains rising out of the desert. That looked like a death march.

There was also a National Guard helicopter that crashed near the area of flight 655 while searching for the plane. All three guardsmen on board perished.

I have watched you two for years, love your adventures and cooking outside ! One thing though, I have to ask can you practice saying the vowels in Spanish words a bit? :) For ex.: El Dorado has a long a in it, like El Dor-ah-do. It's just always frustrated me that Americans often don't respect other languages by learning some of the basics. OR is that how they or you all say it in TX?! Maybe I'm wrong! I'm here in NM and for ex., Maps says the streets and names down here completely wrong and it sounds funny. Most importantly though, have fun 🤩

I found out that the term hobo actually came after the Civil War. Southern soldiers found their homes destroyed. The picked up farm tools, mostly hoes, and traveled farm to farm looking for work. They were called Hoe Boys, later shorten to Hobos.

Your property is either on the Salem Plateau or Springfield Plateau. Both are ancient sea beds and you could possibly find marine life fossils.

That is not a small plane. That was a larger plane, probably 8 passenger or more.All the pieces that you see with holes are non structural pieces like seat backs and bottoms to make the plane lighter. Also wing struts are also perforated to be strong but light. That is hallowed ground for sure.
