The best part about this: Paul NEVER asks Landon what ACTUALLY happened. Just drops enough hints that he knows something isn't adding up. Grandma Lolly telling on Paul also adds in that "ya know, it's OK to mess up, but you're going to hear about it for YEARS now" factor. Kids never quite understand that when their parents were their age, they were doing the exact same thing and telling the exact same, er, truthful tales to THEIR parents. Someday, the kids will catch on... say about the time they have kids of their own.

Now in Landon's defense "idling" is open to interpretation. 😉 You learn from your mistakes, hopefully he learned a few lessons here. The most important is how blessed he is to have a dad and an uncle who can both fix those mistakes and teach him about vehicles in the process. Only those who have to pay $$$ to have repairs done know what a blessing this. You're raising good kids, they just didn't fall far from the tree (Paul). It took my brother a few years to realize how expensive his right foot was- rapairs, accidents, tickets and insurance. Everything's gonna be alright. Take care, stay safe and GOD bless

I can say this, I am really glad there wasn't any you tube or social media back in the mid 70's when I was in this place. I remember one afternoon when I was a senior in HS I was complaining about working full time and going to school and still being broke. Dad looked at me, walked me out to the scrap pile and pointed to a couple of grenaded blocks, a broken cast crank and a stripped ring and pinion set and said, " well, maybe if you stop adding to this pile you'll have some money" He was right. The cool thing is he still has it today it's a four-door hardtop Factory duals original 390 with a four barrel and an automatic. It it runs like new. He has had has been in several car accidents in this car but it's been fixed every time. it still looks good. I can't be more proud of him? When he came into my life he was 8 years old he's 42 now and he still refers to me as his dad though he doesn't call me dad, I think that's pretty cool. He married well and has given us two Grandsons. He never got involved in drugs for which i am greatful! Best regards Bob from Virginia USA

Good video!! Looks like Landon is soon going to be on the road again! I have a 2004 F-150 with a 5.4 Triton.. mechanic replaced the passenger side exhaust manifold and gasket... on the lift idling to check for leaks... engine goes bang, bang, BANG!! Stopped dead! put two 3/8" holes in the oil pan... never got to see the inside so not sure but I suspected the roller followers failed, and dropped a valve??? Cost me $6,700 to get a new rebuilt engine installed. Landon is SO LUCKY he has you and your knowledge and shop!!!!

I think Paul sees a lot of himself at Landon's age in this. There's that, been there, done that, understanding look, while mild chastising him on cam. Message to Landon: You are blessed with caring and involved parents, and a loving family. It doesn't get any better than that.

My dad's been gone for 11 years. But it seemed like I was always bringing my cars in for him to help me fix. You said save it for a trophy my dad did all that. All my stupid breaks were on the wall lol. One of them was chains, I broke one motor mount so I just chained it down on that side when it broke the other side I chained it down on that side. They're still hanging on the wall in the shop there's many more I can't think of any off hand LOL that's what dads are for 👍

Paul my son was cruising down the road after hitting a deer in a 86 dodge d 350 flatbed. He called me at 1am to come get him and his truck because it overheated. We went to install new head gaskets and found out he dropped the valves in #8 which took out the piston. He too said it didn't make any noise! My uncle was always able to inform me how I destroyed something weather I told him or not! It must be a dad's gift or reliving our own B.S. I have some knocking 360 mopar engines but none have ever come apart. At least Landon is learning how things work. Great channel and I enjoy the family aspect of it.

Ben, "You're not supposed to rebuild it thru the top side". Reminds me of the story about a Gynecologist who got bored and changed careers. He went to school to become a mechanic. He learned quickly and when it came time for his final, he aced it. The instructors called him into the office and praised him for the top score ever. Then they asked, why did you do it thru the tailpipe?

My transportation was a motorcycle thru high school, which was all I could afford at the time. So my car engine training came from helping my friends work on their vehicles to keep them running. It was a good learning experience making sure their rides (and sometimes mine too) stayed on the road.

With Paul and Ben's knowledge on mechanics combined with being a father, they were able to do an autopsy and forensic research on that engine. And they painted a pretty accurate picture of the events that happened to that engine from minute clues. Landon was grinning as their theory of events matched what he probably already knew. Hard to get stuff past dads, they've been there and done that. But it was a combination of things, like Ben said.

I was passing a car and inadvertently downshifted from 3rd to 2nd, instead of 4th and dropped a valve in a Jeep. That valve put 2 windows into the soul of that motor. It was amazing how much carnage there was in that block. It seemed like I took forever for that engine to spool down. Our best guess was a quick trip to 7,200 RPM did not sit well with the number 2 exhaust valve.

I have a Wrangler with a 2.5 in it and when I bought it the guy said it has a knock at about 3000 RPM but it will stay together forever if you keep it below 3000. It was a play toy for me and I had plans of putting a 6 liter in it so I didn't care. I was wheeling one day and revved it way over 3 grand and it started knocking real bad. When I got home I decided to drive it over to a friend's garage to look it over and going down a big hill it quit running so I tried starting it with the starter and it wouldn't turn over. Knowing the engine was junk and not caring, at about 40 mph I let the clutch out and it locked the tires up for a second then freed up but didn't start. After letting the clutch out again it started running very rough and knocking bad with a lot of lights flashing on the dash. It was barely running and smoking really bad, I couldn't see the vehicle lights behind me at times due to the smoke, but I made it another 3ish miles to his house after it quit many times. It was a good thing most of the way was down hill or I would've needed a tow. When I got to his garage we looked through the fender well and there was a hole in the block the size of my fist and the wrist pin and half of the connecting rod was sitting on the frame. The goo, a mix of oil and anti freeze I assume, that was running out from under that Jeep was nasty. I was surprised it ran as good as it did, for short amounts of time, after the hole was knocked in the block and it freed itself of the part of the connecting rod that was hitting. That was the last ride for that Jeep and I replaced it with an 86 short bed Chevrolet. I hope you liked my story and God bless you!

My dad didn't own any wrenches, tools. He didn't know a thing about mechanics, but he drove like a wild man every day. When something blew up he'd go to a shop for repair, but he would also think about getting a new car/truck.If my rig had a problem he couldn't care less. Some of the best training I ever had was when my parent vw bug that i was allowed to occasionally drive broke down and my dad gave me a Chilton manual and obtained permission from the mechanic next door for me to push it in and use his shop and tools after hours. He said if you wanna drive you're gonna have to fix it yourself. Took us 2 hours to pull the motor the first time on the 1969 automatic stick shift. We got pretty good and we're able to pull it in about 10 minutes on about the 5th time. Ended up converting it to a real manual eventually when the tranny went on it. My son had a civic that spun one of the crank bearings and although it cost him a bit of money in parts (new crank, etc) he did all the labour himself (with some supervisory help from his dad) and learned a lot about engines in the process. Priceless. The best way to learn is to do, might reduce the heavy foot in the future too, maybe...

Been interesting watching you parent those young studdlies. I raised 2 boys on my own most of their lives and had rules about cars, you can't borrow what you can't replace, THEY can have any car they can afford, THEY pay their own insurance, THEY repair their own cars, I'll be glad to help, and poor planning on THEIR part doesn't mean an emergency on my part.. Glad to see they carried that thinking forward with their own. Everyone gets way more sleep.
