"Demons are misunderstood" is such a common trope nowadays, it's a breath of fresh air to see an anime where that trope is subverted back to "Damn, they actually are evil". Even still there are people who disagree with show's own narrative or call it racist, twitter is amusing.
@joshuawillingham6363
@joshuawillingham6363 15 часов назад
Honestly, it's not even "evil" technically speaking, because despite being sapient they can really only understand the morality of other sapient creatures on an academic level. They're in many ways animals following instincts, but because they can talk and learn and look so human even in-world people try to treat them the same as other sapient beings when they're simply not. It's just like in nature. There are some species that simply cannot co-exist because of their natural instincts and needs, and will almost always end up fighting.

@@joshuawillingham6363 Yes I also read the manga and I understand the argument, but I think saying they are "not evil" is a bit of a sophism. Aura definitely takes pleasure in killing, for example, demons do feel rage, ambition, certain desires. The fact that they don't feel "malice" towards humans doesn't make them neutral or anything, in my opinion. Evil is a matter of perspective anyway, and from our point of view they are literally demons
@joshuawillingham6363
@joshuawillingham6363 13 часов назад
@@NekoJet91 Eh, I don't necessarily think her enjoying it negates the animal argument. Cats enjoy toying with prey, but that doesn't mean they have a developed understanding of what they're doing. While evil absolutely can sometimes depend on perspective, I would argue for someone to be evil they have to really be able to understand what they're doing. Despite being highly intelligent, they don't seem to have the capacity to actually understand caring for another being beyond it being in a Machiavellian sense.

The name Lugner means 'liar' in German. Not too subtle there lol. Demons are best considered a truly alien race, intelligence and ability wise they are the same as any human, but their empathy, morals and so on are far from human-like.

What I found interesting is too many people take the attitude of Stark: "oh, we can speak with them, so we can get along". Frieren states the nature of demons. Then we hear the demons basically saying "yup, that is exactly what we are"....

It shocked me when I realized just how much this show stands out for how it leaves its monsters as monsters, and only monsters. Seriously, it's nearly universal these days that we humanize the monsters in our stories, to the point that it's practically revolutionary *not* to.

Character has horns: Oh naw, they couldn't possibly be evil, that's just prejudiced Character has a grin on their face with a look in their eyes: Man, I do not like this non-demonic person, they have an attitude On the topic of half-elves, a lot of people find it silly that humans in sci-fi and fantasy settings can go around and have hybrid babies with other species because it's very obviously a convenient human-centric outlook (well, in the settings where only humans seem to be able to half-baby around the block). Out in nature the offspring between different species usually only last that one generation... But we're humans writing about humans, so it makes sense there's a bias there lol

6:17 to answer your question, there is usually a lot of padding and chain around that area, but yes he can probably get enough of that out of the way to deal with fast problems. With bigger issues, guy is probably going to need a hand and a few minutes to get out of the armour, which is not ideal on a battlefield (see accounts the Siege of Harfleur and subsequent Battle of Agincourt with the English knights suffering dysentery if you want some grizzly details).

A little bit about Elves and their difference from humans and the comment Frieren did about their lack of reproductive urges in the episode, as well as the similarities some people see between Elves and Demons. Frieren is an elf and Elves have all the same feelings, emotions and social concepts that humans have. The only difference an Elf has from a human is their concept of time. To an elf 100 years is nothing but to a human, it's a lifetime. Consider this, humans meet and marry creating a family usually during the first 2 to 3 decades of out lives. During that time frame we grow up, learn a skill to support ourselves and interact with our friends and family and our social circle, leading to us finding the person we wish to spend our time with and marry to create a family. The elves do the exact same thing but with a different time perception. The Elves in this setting are almost the same as the Elves in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. They are practically immortal unless killed in battle and have perfect memories. That means that they do not perceive time in the same way a human does. For them learning a skill won't take a few years, an elf might spent a couple of centuries perfecting their art, but to them it would be the same thing a human did while going to college for 4 years. So, in comparison to the human example I mention above, an elf would grow up for about a century, learn a skill they are interested in for a couple of centuries, meet someone nice during that time and spent time with them for a couple more centuries and then get married. The same thing a human would do, but because of the different life expectancy and time perception, that leads to a dissonance and conflict between the races. We have seen this already with Fern. It's not that Frieren doesn't care for Fern or she doesn't understand her, it's simply the fact that Frieren can easily spent a decade in a village taking the sights and learning everything there is to know about the area and nothing of note would have happened in the world. Fern cannot do that. Also note that the comment Frieren did about Elves lacking reproductive urges and romantic feelings is also wrong, but I won't go into details here because you need to see a few more episodes for the information to make sense. Just know that that comment is wrong for now. So in conclusion the Elves are nothing like Demons. The Elves have all the feelings, emotions and social norms that humans have, the demons on the other hand are sociopaths, lacking any empathy and understanding of human morality. They are predators through and through. They are like a tiger that has stalked its prey and is ready to pounce. A tiger might learn to imitate the sound of it's prey to lure it in, but it doesn't understand nor does it care to understand it's prey. The Demons are the same, they want to conquer the town and prey on the humans. They learned the language in order to learn how to better lure their prey. They don't care to understand humans, Elves and dwarves in a deeper level, they only need to communicate to deceive their prey and avoid unnecessary conflict.

I always kinda thought that if you were to take a true sociopath and raise them out away from human society they'd prolly end up acting much like that demon girl. Either way shit's gonna get pretty fire. I think they eat people as people being higher lifeforms are able to generate mana of their own, so by eating people their also eating their mana maybe?

7:55 this is possibly my favorite portrayal of demons/monsters in any anime ever because this is exactly what they want you to think they are the perfect counter to humans they pray on our empathy. They don’t know what they’re saying. They just know that it’ll get to you not kill them and it’ll keep them alive, they are the perfect hunters for humans in this era in a normal show they totally would’ve been redeemed but in freiren, they’re just what they are hunters of humans and I find that incredibly cool there smart animals basically who are perfect manipulators

Yes, they evolved/adapted from monsters who cried "help" to lure humans. In a sense, they aren't evil or good. This is just their nature. If there was a predator of humans irl, this is about as close as they'd be.

@@grimmturd Uhmmm, not only don't they have to eat humans, they don't even kill humans just to feed. Killing humans just for the sake of it ? I would call that evil. A evil monster is evil ... doesn't matter if its their "nature" or not.

Demons in this story are not even evil in any sense of that word. They are predators and humans are their prey. No one would call a Lion or Tiger who kills and eats a human, evil as if the Lion or Tiger possessed some sort of moral sense. Demons use language as a tool to manipulate humans. Some humans have learned to do the same thing.

Bro wtf are you talking about they are objectively evil by the standards that the series sets. Spoilers bellow: . . . . . . . . . . . So just looking at the first season, frieren makes it clear that she sees it as a waste of time to not kill any demon on sight. In what I assume will be in the second season, the el Dorado arc shows that demons fundamentally lack certain emotions mainly guilt and malice if I remember right. You are conflating being evil intentionally and actually being evil. They are incapable of doing somthing out of hate or malice but they are still evil Also literally in this episode is is stated that demons don't need to eat humans to survive, they just think humans tastes the best so the predator theory isn't the best. The edit was because I accidentally pressed send before I was done

When you have an opportunity, I would recommend looking up Frieren character names because it's pretty funny. Every character's name is based on German and just about everyone's name either has something to do with their character, is a kind of pun, or just gives up their entire deal. For example, the demon who told that story about his "Father" has a name that literally means "Liar" in German.
