This little guy is London, he’s a West Highland Terrier or as they are more affectionately known, a Westy.
Our first experience with Westies came when we were house sitting in London. We looked after two Westies, Polly and Darcy. They were adorable and really affectionate.
Mr. Darcy was an elder statesman and Polly was the young feisty one. They took us on walks, showed us around the local area and we even enjoyed a pint or two at their favourite pub.
When we realised it was time to get a dog, we initially wanted to adopt a rescue dog, but there were no small dogs in any of the shelters. We live in an apartment so a large dog wasn’t an option or fair on them.
After some research, we found a certified breeder of Westies and because we had such a great experience with Polly and Darcy the decision to get a puppy was easy. Little did we know at the time how challenging it was going to be at the beginning.
So, this video is dedicated to what we’ve learned while having a West Highland Terrier puppy.

My Westie lived exactly 12 years to the day from when I first saw him til he passed at my side. There's no describing the joy he brought to my life, nor the depth of the sorrow I felt losing him. I don't know how to explain it other than I must have been the most pious saint in some previous life to have had him as my Bubba.💔

My two brothers 10mths...are so stubborn but recall comes with a treat. It works Snowy fell in our pond swam to waterfall and his brother Milo ran round and grabbed his collar and helped him out...so touching to see.. love them

Love my Westin, Winston Bentley McNabb ! He is 13 has had diabetes for 5 years, went blind in 4 months we got the operation new lenses so he could see, on heavy meds now HBP, heart issues, clasping Wind- pipe . I recon we spend 30k American on him . He is my boy I love him, once you have the love of a Westie your never the same . JohnBoyUtah

Winston is lucky to have you as his dog mom. Emily, 3 Westies ago, had a knee and hip replaced because of her craziness in chasing birds, those many 180°+ turns did a number on her. She recovered nicely and continued her bird folly! We are as devoted to these beautiful beasties as they are to us and we'll do whatever we can to help keep them whole.♡

My heart is melting! I had two westies - Kadie and Joey - who were 9 months apart and the loves of my life. They're gone now but when I watch videos like this I want to start all over again with another westie! They're the spunkiest little breed of dog and so, so lovable!

That's a very nice video. I have a Westie who is turning 13yo this year. He is a sweetheart. I used have a maltipoo female, Pelucia, who passed last year at age 13 from a disease. But both of them got along. My westie is very tranquil but he used to do anything he could think of to annoy Pelucia, once she got mad at him, my westie would go on with his life happy wagging his tail as if he had accomplished his mission ...lol. He is so funny. He got depressed after the passing of Pelucia, but we just happened to have gotten 2 new puppies, so that helped us all, specially my westie, to grief. Westies are so sweet! It's beyond crazy when someone comes onto our property- they go into hyper alarm mode - you have to cover your ears the three are so loud together. At night they split up and each on sleeps on a different bed with a different family member - I could go on and on, endless stories - Westies are sensational companions- @@Travellivelearn

💖 I had my Westie Toby from 8 weeks old until his passing at age 16. He was the dog love of my life and was such a loving dog, especially as he matured. Feisty but also very in tune with me. He seemed concerned when I was sick. Smartest dog I ever had. I miss him every day. Incredible breed! Congratulations and enjoy your little one! I called Toby "sweetpea". 😃❤

@@Travellivelearn London is so precious! 😍 I don't have too many training tips, unfortunately, because I attempted training but it didn't really stick with him. 😆 But I would say to be especially observant about what's on the floor or near where he can dig or find something. Westies can find things that we humans don't know are there. Toby once dug out something that was on the bottom of a chair leg that prevented scratching on floors, and it was a large pin with a needle on it. I got it from him but was horrified that he may have swallowed that. Also I gave him food with a plastic spoon and he bit down so hard that the spoon broke and he swallowed the top half. I had to rush him to emergency where they got him to vomit up the plastic. It could have been bad, lol. So I would say don't let London lick utensils. One more thing I can think of is that as Westies age, they can get very bad dry eyes. If his eye starts to get red, you should get that checked to see if he needs eyedrops to prevent ulcers. 😊🌷

They reach a stage where they are no less stubborn but do what you ask of them out their love for you. It will continuously break your heart. Speaking of broken hearts we realized when Casey our first Westie was about 12 We would have A very difficult time when he passed we got a little sister for him. It was a little much for him as he did not have the energy to handle a puppy. He passed at 14 and we immediately got another boy which allowed Arrabella to be kind of a "sister/mommy" to our Finley since as much as we love them they are all spayed or neutered because if we didn't Disney would have to do a sequel with Westies instead of Dalmatians.

It’s so difficult when dogs go to the rainbow 🌈 bridge. We had a dog called Harry and it took us years before we could talk about him without getting emotional. They become such a big part of the family. We keep talking about getting another one but agree we’d prefer a puppy that’s similar age. We feel your pain. I don’t even want to think about London leaving us. He’s in bed now with us as I type this 😊 if we had a big house and yard we’d have an army of them as well 😀

Such a heartwarming video, Westies are the Best! London is super cute, he's about the same age of my two Westies, Murphy and Riley. London reminds me so much of Murphy (born in Limerick, Ireland) when he was a puppy. If you get another Westie, you can name him Sydney! hahahahaha

Ha ha. My westie’s mantra. Is are you talking to me. Stubborn as hell but my best buddy. Recall is not in their dna. Favourite thing is to roll in the snow. As we live in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 we can do that. Enjoy your wee boy. He looks adorable.

Same! - I've been house sitting 2 months, both times with Westies and here I am, stuck on looking at them on youtube. It is only a matter of time..... One thing I cannot agree with is the small dog needing just a small home. The second westie I knew had the energy of lightning, she covered hillsides in a zap, and was happier in constant motion. She needed acres, and to be off-leash.

Thank you. We did a lot of research before we got our Westie. They certainly are little dogs with big personalities. He brings us so much joy and pleasure although he can be naughty and defiant lol

After trying numerous shampoos and medication for my Westie, Rowan, aged 8 years, skin problems, at last I have found the answer. Half an Apoquel tablet per day, lots of fish and nothing with animal or beef derivatives.

nice and very helpful video. one problem with westies is that people don't do enough research and wrongly think they're getting a cutesy lapdog, when the opposite is the case. don't get me wrong, westies (and not all of them since their characters differ hugely) do like sitting on laps but they'd probably rather be off hunting in the bushes or causing mayhem somewhere lol. already had 4 of the little sods (or should that be the other way round?) and they certainly light up your life. just got our fifth, a 4-year-old rescue (we're the 4th owners) who's bedded in fine after a couple of months. from what i can gather the 2nd and 3rd owners had the same misconception about the actual nature of these wee beasties as a lot of other people. the original owner had emigrated to Oz thanks for posting (and if you want to put a stop to them legging it in a park, simply carry a few treats with you. bribery rarely fails ;o)

thought i'd already posted this one: pls be careful about how many carrots you give them. a Vitamin A overdose can/will cause very serious medical problems in humans or pets

He certainly keeps us on our toes and loves getting up to mischief. Thanks for the tip about carrots. We give him one in the morning and one in the afternoon but they are cut in half. How many would you recommend? Just when we think we have him figured out he throws a curve ball lol.

@@Travellivelearn hi there, i wouldn't dare to say i'm an expert but we've already had 4 overlapping westies, the last two of which died within 3 weeks of each other last november, Mr. Todd, from galloping cancer out of nowhere at the age of 16 and other Anna Maria (all Beatrix Potter names if you were wondering lol) aged 11, plagued by medical problems, she already had Cushings and developed pulmonary fibrosis, aka "westie lung". normally you can expect at least 1 year with this hideous illness but in her case she only lasted ca. 3 months, possibly accelerated due to Mr. Todd's departure. we now have a single rescue westie to fill the gap. as for the westie character, all 5 of ours are/were totally different, from the sensible, reserved Jemima Puddleduck to the happy hooligan that was my first, Samuel Whiskers, so any claim to expertise is probably going to be wildly misplaced, especially as they were all brought up the same way. i always say that a command for a westie is merely a basis for negotiation as you've probably already discovered ;o) as for safe carrot dosage i don't have a clue, you'd have to talk to a vet but a Vit A overdose is no laughing matter. not that i'm trying to alarm you and it takes some doing to overdose but it's better to be safe than sorry. the usual giveaway that something's wrong in humans is that their skin turns orange but that's obviously not going to work with a westie thanks again for the video. London looks like another little cracker and it's always nice to see them grow into their ears lol. may you have very many years of fun together . they can be little sods at times (especially between 8 months and 1 year) but boy are they worth it best david ;o)

It seems your puppy didn't recognize you after you came back from the Gold Coast. He was acting like you are a stranger and intruder. But as soon as he recognize it was you he was happy to greet you. And how it is? I am willing to have a westie in the future, but it would be nice to have a dog that wouldn't suffer if we went on holiday and left him in pet hotel. What do you think? Westies would be okay with that?

Hi @ishakak147 thanks for leaving a comment. It's always a great feeling when he recognises me lol We use @Trustedhousesitters whenever we go away for an extended period of time. A pet loving person comes into our home and looks after little London. It works like Airbnb where you can choose sitters by their reviews.
