I have an 87 Westy, her name is "Dreamer". I too don't live in her, but use her for long weekend getaways. Change out your lights to LED's, extends your battery by a lot. Yes, an awning is a must, as well as a Road Shower and Narrow topper (for storage), still leaving room for a kayak up on the roof rack. I added a Propex HS2000 heater to extend my usage into the Fall and Spring, really the best time to camp in a Westy, but the nights can be chilly. I have already purchased a solar kit for her and accessory batteries. The fridge runs fine on electricity, so putting in a battery/solar system to accommodate the existing fridge. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy...fun adventures are ahead.

I own a railway handcar and I named it "Alpha Centauri" after the closest star system 4.36 light years away. I have also been thinking of buying a 1940's or 50's city bus to convert into a camper.

RUBY SUE!!!!! One of my FAVORITE movies is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and that movie came out in the late 80's. In the movie Cousin Eddie's daughter's name is Ruby Sue and since the van is red and from the 80's, I think it would be perfect!!!!!! 😁❤😁❤😁❤😁❤😁❤😁

Recommend the Shurflo Faucet from GoWesty, ARB Fridge and an ARB Awning. I use the Renogy Solar System, its a suitcase model and works great. Congrats and have fun making so many great memories and exploring the country in your Westy.

Porta pottie and screen room to attach 2 the awning......they used 2 make them 4 the Westies with a partitioned section 4 the porta potty.....I remember them as a child in Germany.😊

I been watching a ton of those home conversions or mini cabin videos for vans and stuff and this is precisely what I want to do for a very long time!! I would love to build a mini wooden cabin on a truck bed and just travel out! If only!

Congrats on the Westy purchase! The Vanagon is a great platform for updates and additions. Check your maintenance records to see if the fuel hoses and the plastic connector for the fuel hoses on the firewall have been replaced, as well as CV axle maintenance.

Nadine, I notice you often sound stopped up... if sinuses are something you struggle with, I HIGHLY suggest looking into a balloon sinuplasty. It literally changed my life. I used to have 3-4 major sinus infections a year, with nearly constant congestion. I have almost nothing now. It has been 14 months, and I have only had the slightest of single sinus infection. It only happened because I was beat down and congested from a major flu episode in February. Aside from that, I have only had congestion MAYBE 2 or 3 days a month at the most. Aside from that, love the content! Y’all keep it up, and I hope y’all absolutely LOVE the van!

Hey love the van, I just got my westy in dec. and loving it. Just a thought on the faucet. Mine leaked until I put a GoWesty pressure regulator on my supply hose, leak stopped. Have fun.

Wanda (the Westy), both for the alliteration and because The "Scarlet" Witch (red, like your van?) in Marvel comics/movies first name is Wanda, which is itself a name with Germanic roots (reference to Slavs in Eastern Germany). And if you want me to work *extra* hard on selling you, Wanda sort of like "wandering" if you say it fast (or with a terrible German accent), which you'll undoubtedly be doing in your fancy old-new Westy! Either way, grats on the purchase! Hope you have lots of fun adventures with it :)

Nadine, I'm so proud of you and Matt. A campervan will give you comfort, if you manage to adapt it well, and freedom when it comes to destination. You won't have to rely on scheduled tours, renting cars or whatever, a campervan is freedom on wheels. Looking forward for your videos on it :D exploring the whole Canada or on a big road trip in the US :)

Elmo! We have the same westy year! We decided to pull out the fridge and turn the space into storage to help keep the clutter down-extra gear adds up quickly! We’ve found that a decent cooler with good quality ice packs works great for a long weekend and is nice to keep the floor space open while camping. Might need more refrigeration for longer trips, though. Congrats!

That's awesome! We were also thinking of using a cooler in the meantime. The fridge delete kit from GoWesty looks nice to add extra storage and keep it looking stock after removing the fridge. What colour is your westy?

RV, camper, & bicycles sales have gone through the roof, and supplies are getting low. It looks like you found just the right one just in time. I hope it treats you well during your upcoming journeys. Newer appliances will be far more efficient. LED lighting will keep the batteries from draining as fast. Good luck! 😁

Thanks vclamp! It's true that sales are way up and some of the vans we were looking at were selling so fast. Some of our lights have already been replaced with LED, but theres definitely more we'd like to do with the van. Take care!

The 2.1 WBX engine is weak especially with the weight and an automatic. You 'll be on the shoulder going up steep grades in the mountains. The square headlights are weak - get an E-code upgrade.Any suspension upgrades done? Get on theSamba. Westy near me has a big sign written across the rear window - "I can't go faster". I have an 88 tintop automatic with 2.5 Subaru since 2003. (Happy Vanagoning!)

We found it for sale in Vancouver, BC. It drives very well! The upgraded 16" wheels allow for wider tires and give it a more stable footprint on the road compared to the westys we drove with the original 14" rims. It drives straight and everything feels good and tight. We're super happy with it
